For small midwest channels in ponds and lakes, punch bait like the Secret 7 and Sonnys was the bait of choice, even over cut bait. Rivers, cut bait and live was king. In cold weather, dip bait is nearly useless, but when the water is warm, that scent will travel quite a ways. In my experience, just as you saw, the dip bait always catch smaller channels, the cut and live baits always bring in the big boys. I've also never caught blues or flats on dip baits.

    As always, love the video!
My Grandpa went 3 to 4 times a week to the MO River every week when I was growing up. His bait of choice was loading 4 nightcrawlers on a J-hook or spong bait/dip bait. He never came home empty handed and plenty were some heifers. Two things he taught me in contrast to Spencer's tactics.... he would buy legit sea sponges and use large chunks of those to dip. Also, he would swear by dipping the dry spong in the water first, then squeeze out the excess water, then dip it in and load it up. I can testify it stayed on WAY better that way. Dip of choice was Bowkers, would buy it 5 gal buckets full. I'm a cut bait guy for sure, but small ponds or lakes tend to take stink baits, dip baits, or livers! Tight lines yall!

like the video. i have found that using stink bait works in warm water and smaller bodies of water. I prefer shad on big rivers, but in smaller rivers from shore with limited access the stink bait can bring the channels to you. Id have to say that they both have there benefits in certain conditions. stink bait has not worked for me in cold water situations. I am impressed it worked at all! love the videos. its nice to see upper midwest fising about more than just walleyes.

I use Tripple S (sonny's) with great success on the Mississippi here in MO. Love the big dipper bait holders like what you are using, but you have to ditch the sponge and flip the basket around to expose the hook. It works better than the way they come in the package.

Dad and his buddy work log jams on the river from airboat with stink bait. The catch a pile small eaters. I have never caught anything very big on the stuff. Also I’ve always been hardcore live bluegill kinda guy, but this weekend I used fresh cut shad I caught. Did pretty ok, 8 blues one flat one channel

I will go cut bait or live bait any day before a manufactured bait.. but my uncle used to make homemade stink bait and we caught over 40 channel cats on one ☝️ trip but the channels were 1/2 pound to a pound so the quality of fish on stink bait to me will always be smaller then cut or fresh .. thank you for all you do spencer awesome video!!!!

Good idea. I'm not much on dip bait BUT I have had decent luck with Danny's blood bait. Likely was sitting next to what you picked up at WallyWorld. If I'm not going to use live or fresh cut I will do good on soured carp. Seems like those channels and blues will swim a mile up river to see where that trail of stunk is coming from. Learned it in north-central Iowa on both Des Moines, and had a lot of luck with it just below lock and dam #19.
Gotta a couple of weeks to catch up on, been busy on the salt life.

I technically just did this challenge yesterday. My buddy loves his stinkbait. I had just caught a single shad, and a few bluegill. He had caught no fish on stinkbait, one on a worm while I was fresh bait net chucking. I put the shad head on threw it out and in 3 minutes had a nice 8lb channel. He didn’t catch any on dip bait. But got bit on cut bluegills. This was in a lake.

Dip bait works well in warmer water. Ours is nothing more than cheese, oil and baking soda. Drilled together and age. Sometimes years. It works well for channels up to 7 pounds. But we fish for " eater" fish. Fish anything that breaks the current and warmer water. You will pile up the channels

The best catfish bait I have ever found was chicken blood. It's poured over a lattice of filter-like material and allowed to congeal, then cut into strips about 1" wide and put into a plastic container. I just cut a piece about 1.5" long, folded it over and stabbed it down over a treble hook, then dropped it down to about 10" off the bottom. Doesn't take long to begin sacking them up.

As far as catfish bait goes, a catfish will eat pretty much everything a person eats. That's why you see so many different baits being used on the water. My personal favorite is plain old hot dogs at night by a campfire. Either way you wind up with food to eat.

I've never had luck with stink bait as much as I wish it worked just for the convenience factor. Last I tried was some super catfish bait from Berkley scientifically designed to catch catfish like nothing else. Fished it against everything from cut bait, nightcrawlers, crawdads, grasshoppers and even a beetlespin. The stinkbait seemed to repell everything. Not even a nibble when everything else was getting hammered by channels and bullheads of all sizes. I wanted it to work so bad but it really seemed to repell the fish rather than attract. Add it to the dozen or more stinkbaits I've tried that get out fished by pretty much anything else. I want to believe! Unfortunately it just never works for me.

I see you switched from the baitcasters to the spinning rods and reels for the smaller catfish.

Great video your content is great. Now I’m saying if you ever do this again when I was so poor all I ate was catfish. I use to use Catfish Charlie blood dip bait. I always got to eat the next day

The trick to dry them is to swing the rod around your head. Use centrifugal force to shed the water off

These baits have their niches. I use a punch bait for channels when I want lots of eating size fish. If I'm at the lake or river and want a big blue or flathead, I'm going with cut or live shad

Sonnys was the brand we always used and would catch a ton of catfish with it on the Mississippi by wing dikes. Never caught anything over 2 lbs though. 😆

On the Ohio River for channel cats, you can't beat the stink baits. Try using small pieces of a sponge on a hook, and thinning out the stink bait with vegetable oil. Can't go wrong, just don't get that stinks stuff on ya...
