I’d be more concerned about having a larger emergency fund, 10k seems low given their income.

their house and cars are paid off. 3-6 months of expenses looks a lot different for people with no mortgage, no rent, and no car notes. at this point, if they were to lose their jobs, they'd only need a few hundred a month for property tax, food, car insurance, gas, cell phones. $10k is more than enough

You missed where they said they have enough margin to save 50k in 6 months...that means they have an extra 8000 a month, with a paid off house. 10k is plenty for them.

@@BrianErwin That was a whole lot of things to just be "a few hundred a month". Insurance for two cars alone would qualify under that claim. We can call it $200 a month. Assuming a modest $50 per person a week for food that's $400 alone in food. Assuming they are driving the cars a modest $100 worth of gas (I use $300 myself). Lets say they have a modest $80 a month for cellular. It's difficult to estimate property tax without all their information I'll assume a modest $400 monthly. You should also assume home repairs will be needed, so lets call it $400 a month on average. We have also ignores power and electric, so lets add another modest assumption of $200. There are even more expenses that could be in play such as home owners insurance, but I'll end the line on expenses and do the math. With those hyper-idealized assumptions, to maintain their bare bones standard of living they would need about $1800 rounded a month.
Is 10k enough for that? Sure, it qualifies just under 6 months, but it's not "more than enough" especially when you understand just how generous those assumptions were.

@@LegDayLasthey drive a 2007 and a 2004. he's 56 and she's 45. they can insure both of those cars for $5 a month. in fact, i'm sure they only have liability since she crashed recently and didn't fix it. when i drove a 2007 lexus ten years ago, i paid $15 a month for insurance, at age 30. gas in colorado is only $3, and assuming they lost their jobs, they would be applying for jobs online, no longer having to commute to work, and only driving when absolutely necessary, like up the street for groceries. i've done rideshare in los angeles, where gas is $5, and i budgeted $375 a month for it, so yes, $100 is fine for people who shouldn't be driving while jobless. without income, they go on beans and rice. when i was broke, i lived on $1 tacos and $0.30 packs of noodles. $5 a day, $35 per person a week, $300 a month. i pay $80 a month on electric with four teens on a video game all day, so $200 is pushing it. in an emergency, they don't get to run the AC all day; $40 a month. property taxes, yeah, maybe $400 a month, and there aren't monthly house repairs, so no need for that. cell phones and internet bundle, $80. home owners insurance, $10. that totals around $900 a month.
the main point is, most people's biggest expense is their rent or mortgage, which this couple doesn't have. in an extreme case, even if they sold their cars, and just paid property tax, and walked to the store for food, they would be fine for almost a year. you guys putting $50k to the side for a rainy day and it just sits there.

They both agreed that they could save up the $60,000 in 6 months, meaning that their expenses are about 30k / year ($150,000 / year income and ability to save $120,0000 in a year = remaining expenses of $30,000 / year or $2500 / month).

I once heard it's better to have an emergency fund that can last a year for small business owners. So if 10k is their 6 months emergency fund then they should at least double it before saving for the car and it won't take them long to do that.

It's worth the money if she enjoys it. It's about enjoying life. The goal isn't to just build up a huge net worth, get old, die, and pass it down to your kids who will ultimately blow it. Currently, they don’t have much saved for retirement. He’s in his 50’s and should be throwing half of his income in retirement. The house is almost all of their net worth. You can’t live on your house’s value and still live in it. You need cash in retirement. As someone who had to help parents on Social Security with a small pension, old age is expensive. You should be afraid of not having enough and your kids having to help you when you can no longer work.

The problem was that the wife tried to switch the husbands words at the beginning by saying “My husband thinks I’m fine with the car I have.” Which was a lie, he never said that. $50k for a car with $150k income, paid-for house, but basically no other money is a hard NO. Retirement these days costs WAY more than a house, and the market value of one’s primary residence cannot be realized at all unless one is willing to go back to renting. She should drive her 2007 MDX into the ground and save/invest the $50k. $150k HH income in 2024 is a subsistence living in most places, and Denver is a relatively expensive city.

Depends. I would NEVER buy a used EV. And the quality has gone down on GM and Stellaris (Dodge/Chrysler/Fiat). All the makers are pulling tricks to meet the EPA requirements. That's one reason new trucks are so big compared to years past (even though they have smaller beds). And everybody is slapping turbos on engines, which wears them out quicker than natural aspiration.
