The simplest method of getting into PLC Programming is to use an emulator. However, locating the proper files may be troublesome as Rockwell Automation has created a very intricate process to access them. Furthermore, downloading from third-party sites may be unsafe due to viruses and corrupted versions of the required software.

With these tools, you can start practicing PLC Development without the need of purchasing hardware.
Utilizing the Rockwellell Compatibility Tool
Our walkthrough starts at the Rockwell Compatibility tool. This website allows one to download all the available software built by Rockwell Automation. However, most of this software will require a license. There is an exception however for legacy software as well as firmware revisions.

RSLogix Micro Download Search
A standard RSLogix 500 version will require a license, however, there’s a package named “RSLogix Micro” which is a lite version. It doesn’t require a license. That being said, we will type in this name and look for the following shortcut.
RSLogix Micro Starter Lite w/o RSLinx EN (8.30.00)

On the next screen, you will find the software with two buttons: “Download” and “Add to Download Cart”. Selecting the “Add to Download Cart” will not download the tools we’re looking for. Instead, this will download the v16 of the firmware for the MicroLogix1100 PLC. Therefore, it’s important to select “Download” as shown below.

Everytime I launch RSLogix Micro Starter Lite. I get a reoccurring Server Busy pop up, asking to 'Switch to' or 'Retry'. Ive uninstalled and reinstalled all programs. I have the workstation emulator setup withing RSLinx. I am at a standstill. HELP !!

Hi. I am facing a problem while trying to install files from "2.57.00-RSLinxLite-A-DVD" onto my windows 11 workstation. Everytime I try to install RS Linx Classic, an error would pop up asking to download the "FactoryTalk Diagnostics 2.30 (CPR 9 SR 3)" from the CD. After when I try to download the "FactoryTalk Diagnostics 2.30 (CPR 9 SR 3") file from the folder, it would simply start rolling back the action showing a message " your system has not been modified" . Also I tried using the run>dcomcnfg method to remove and again add the security pemissions to the rslogix500 pro file, but it seems like nothing is working as of now. I would really appreciate your help in this regard. thank you in advance.

Hi, I download the RS LOGIX STARTER LITE and tried to use it to go online with a micrologix 1100 series B FW11 but it kept coming back saying ' this processor is not supported by Rslogix micro starter lite' is this the case and if so can I get a correct free version. I'm a first time beginner.

Your presentation is awesome. I just have problems when configuring my Ethernet connections. My laptop is not giving an IP address. so i was not able to connect a Ethernet driver. Rslogix 500 emulate stops installing after RSlogix and RSlinx are already installed. Anybody can provide a fix will be appreciated.
At 22:14 when I choose my station I see an error "Not able to start emulator", then I hit OK and it closes the project. Any idea how I can fix this issue?

Thank you a lot I've been trying to install a PLC program to learn PLCs and ladder logic because I want to work on control systems. I was never taught PLCs and ladder logic in college because the course weren't require for my curriculum in Electrical and Electronic Engineering. I have question do I need an physical PLC to test my ladder logic code or can just do a simulation through the Emulate?
actually the Emulator works as a real PLC, so you can make you logic programs download them to the Emulator and start testing them

Your video tutorial works like a charm, however when I tried to hook up my Micrologix 1200 PLC with laptop using RS232-DB9 cable, and adding RS-232 DF1 driver, it showed an error, "RSLinx failed to configure the COM port. The COM port may already be in use" . Can you help me fix this problem? Thanks a lot.
Hi Lino, it's hard to say what the root cause may be, but I've seen this error due to a bad driver (see if you can download online) and from bad hardware (not all USB - RS 232 dongles work...)

at 15:31 where you are assigning an IP address, I believe you have a physical controller/plc connected to your laptop/pc via ethernet. I did not connect any controller to my laptop and I just added Emulate driver in Rslinx . After creating a file in Rslogix micro starter lite when I am trying to open the same file in Emulate it's giving an error: This SLC500 program must be compiled before it can be emulated.
I got it, I can successfully go online and offline. I did not add an Ethernet driver in Rslinx and I suppose we only need to add the Ethernet driver in Rslinx when we have a controller connected via Ethernet to our laptop.
Hey, the problem you're seeing is normal; you need to click the "verify program" button which is a little computer at the top of the RSLogix 500 software. Click this icon first, then save the program, then load it into Emulate; it should work.

It's definitely compatible with FactoryIO, but I'm not sure if they can pull directly from Emulate or you'll have to buy an actual controller. I will test it at some point.

Hi Jeff, you need to add the PLC. You can edit the driver and type in that IP address. Also, 192.168.1.4 is what I gave my MicroLogix module. Yours should have the address you gave it.
