I’m gonna make a plea for Stuart, the guy who’s always been on the edge of the group, and clearly grappling with depression, but made some surprising connections.
Howard and Bernadette deteriorated into a cliche "Nagging Wife and manchild husband" couple. They got to be like Raymond and Debra from Everyobdy Loves Raymond and James Thurber couples. She became a replacement mother to Howard.
True. 😂 Or Doug and Carrie from King of Queens. Penny ended up being the best girlfriend of the show even though initially she was set up to be the most irresponsible.
I’m glad Howard and Bernadette have each other- Howard was very creepy and rapey, especially with Penny. Bernadette was a great character who helped greatly improve Howard’s attitude toward women and his creepy undertones. She makes me laugh and she doesn’t take anyone’s bullshit.
The episode where Penny finally told Howard off is one of my favourite moments. His behaviour was completely inappropriate and he needed to stop. I’m glad he was able to grow and find a healthy relationship that worked for both of them.
She started out so incredibly nice and sweet and in the end she was just toxic. I wouldn't have minded the "sweet girl with a dark side" trope but at some point the writers made her downright obnoxious to the point where you wonder why anyone would be friends with her in the first place.
That's what I've been saying, but a bunch of people defend her. In the earlier seasons when they first introduced her character, she was pretty sweet. She was assertive enough to not put up with bs, but not to the point where she was just aggressively mean. Unfortunately as the show went on, she just became toxic to the point where she was like an overexaggerated "popular mean girl" bully.
I have to agree. They exaggerated her aggression past the point of reason. No one would realistically put up with that for very long. No one should be "afraid" of their friends.
Well to be fair all the characters except Sheldon and Amy had terrible regression development. Penny was made unlikeable and a drunk. Leonardo was made into a winning bitch. Howard was even more of a man-child. Raj was the girliest closest gay. And Bernadette was made into a bully and an abusive wife. Why they made all the characters so unlikeable, I don't know. But by season 12 BBT ran 3 seasons too long.
People think Bernadette was mean but she was the only friend with kids while having a high status career. It is a lot more pressure then you think. No one should judge a woman doing so much.
i think the first instance where i started considering her "mean" was her treatment of leonard during the scavenger hunt, long before she became a mother
I was surprised when she started having kids with Howie. As an eldest, we tends to runaway from another experience of motherhood. We are really drained 🥲
I’m the youngest, but my oldest sibling married another oldest sibling and they had two kids. (It wouldn’t be safe for them to have more since my sister in law got breast cancer, but they still have the two.) Their oldest is also super freaking competitive 😅
I'm the oldest child and I understand Bernadette pretty well. Whanever I admit I'm oldest one, many people expect the eldest child would be the most reasonable, parental figure, kindest, understable and would LOVES kids. The one who would always help, share, let go etc, Ever when we're already grown ups family expect me to the nice one, calm and understanding one. My younger siblings says "You're thought and don't know when to let go". But seriously- taking care about others since you're one young may make people pretty thought. Hard to treat children like "sweet angels", when you learn first handed how chaotic beings they can be. And it's hard to make boundaries, when people expect you to be ALWAYS the nice one. So the fact Bernadette became the kindest and meanest one is pretty understable to me.
I would love for you to analyse the Gallagher siblings from Shameless US. Their developments are interesting. Fiona was essentially the parent and raised everyone else and had to juggle taking care of everyone and trying to survive on the poverty line. Her relationships were all disasters and like her two falls from grace were in all honestly long over due and I hated when the rest of her family hated her trying to improve her life like when she took over the diner and brought the property she had. Whenever she tried to do something that was for herself and not her siblings there was push back. Lip is the epitome of wasted potential. near enough a genius. Super smart. Has both the academic smarts and the street smarts to get by in life yet threw away all his potential all because he doesn't respect authority figures. Ian and Carl I feel are the only ones who ended up with stable and happy lives. Ian gets his mental health issues under control and finds a career path he is called to as an EMT and got married and lives in a nice apartment and he battled a lot to get there. Carl realised that his penchant for violence can be used for good because he joins the police after a short sting in the army. He goes from criminal to law enforcer and becomes a better person and while yes still has his own little dodgy schemes now and then he morally aligns the right way. I love the scene where he helps the trans woman who sells the cigarettes. that's actually a really sweet Carl moment. Debbie frustrates me so much. She essentially baby traps a guy and I deffo feel she was clamouring the most for love and affection and someone to guide her and she clearly feels the most lonely in life. But her attitude as she gets older particularly towards Fiona really annoys me because she becomes super ungrateful. Liam basically gets forgotten about but he is also smart. I just think it would be interesting to dive deeper into the siblings and see what makes them tick
I have a complicated relationship w this show bc I grew up w it and still find it funny, but much maturing and relationship experience later, the sexist jokes and character arcs make me very uncomfortable, such as Bernadette being the sole catalyst to Howard becoming less creepy and more respectful towards women. it shouldn't be your partner's responsibility to improve your whole outlook on life and/or relationships, that's something you need to tackle with a professional because you want to improve (only for your partner to be called bossy and annoying).
Well, I'm not saying you are wrong but Bernadette is bossy there's even an episode where Penny and Bernadette's boss bond over how mean she is. Or when she manipulates people to do what she wants.
@@K1ng1995 oh absolutely, she deffo has moments where I just wanted to skip her dialogue altogether, she's very nuanced which is part of what fascinates me about her character
@Heyflaviaahey also I don't get why people hate Penny being pregnant. I mean birth control isn't 100% effective. Maybe it was an accident and she changed her mind.
@@K1ng1995 it's been a while since I last watched the show but I do remember that whole thing yea. I guess if it were an accident and she wasn't planning on having kids at the time she could've got the morning after pill and maybe that's why people were angry? penny's interesting too bc she has some contradicting characteristics
tbf, I think it was more audience reaction that rewrote Howard, they used Bernadette to hide the quite unsubtle shift away from the creepy jokes and instead gave him a successful marriage as his main personality trait in the group
3:45 Lol, it was the opposite for my partner - he’s the youngest of 3 boys but his eldest brother became the slacker & he as the youngest became the one who helped out the family (his middle brother did too but not to the extent my partner did) to the point where he felt he was taken for granted.
I felt like Bernadette transformed into a mean girl starting from episode one of season 8, I believe it was; when she got Penny an interview at her work. It kind of came out of nowhere to me.
It's interesting that both Bernadette and Amy's "mean girl" sides only blossomed when they became friends with Penny, similar to how in the typical mean girl archetype, you have the main girl (Penny) who always seems a lot nicer than her two minions, but it's only because they carry out her dirty work and so don't have to be as performative with their actions as the queen bee. If you've ever watched Basketball wives you can see a real world application of this dynamic between Shaunie and her trusted minions, Evelyn and (previously) Tammi. Shaunie always played at being neutral but her besties never held back when they felt like ripping someone to shreds, and Shaunie was pulling the strings behind the scenes. The difference here is that Penny is a "reformed" popular girl and has largely hung up her mean girl antics, reserving them for protecting those she cares about, so there isn't really a driving force behind Amy and Bernadette's behavior. But since it's familiar to Penny she's drawn to the friendships instead of put off. Bernadette and Amy have never really been in a friendship where they've had the freedom to be and explore and express themselves and the "power by proxy" that comes with being connected to the popular girl, so they almost seem to relish in those moments where they can be as mean as they've had to endure people being to them but it doesn't dominate their personalities or screen time. Amy has a clearer intent and understanding as to why: wish fulfillment. When they were being bullied and left out they dreamed of days when the roles would be reversed, and now it's finally happened. Only they didn't have to become awful people to get it, which is why we see flashes of mean girl antics blended in with "real" people instead of your typical mean girl trio. At first their mean girl antics were because they assumed it would be the expected behavior being friends with someone like Penny, but because Penny isn't a mean girl it more so became about them enjoying the power than comes from speaking up like that and taking action instead of sitting back and waiting for others to tell you who to be. That's why in the beginning Amy seemed to be ready for "war" while Bernadette always had to be coaxed but never really resisted, yet Bernadette became the one who adapted it into their personality more while Amy mellowed out.
Contrary to popular belief, to me Bernadette seemed to be extremely generous and kind. She was way more respectful and understanding towards Raj, unlike others who often treated Raj as a punching bag. She took the comic store guy under her roof. She knew how to decipline Sheldon. She may be bossy, but with 5 nutcases around one had to be the ultimate boss.
The problem I have with Bernadette’s ‘toughness’ is that in the end she didn’t know the difference between standing up for yourself & being the bully & she never fully recognises that. She also pushes for things that aren’t just for her to decide like trying to name her son without consulting Howard & even though she apologises initially, just because the birth was hard she still demands that he be called Michael & Howard just gives in, even though Bernadette’s father (whom she wanted to name her son after) barely made the effort to welcome Howard to his family.
From what I've experienced, I think quite a few women in STEM find themselves either developing or accentuate these characteristics that were mentioned in the video, too.
Her character has layers, i am thankful that I get to experience and accept her character as it is, weakness, strength, the human-ness. I get to accept all of the characters of the show without going against my moral compass, and for that , I am truly grateful. I do not think, i’ll ever experience the same acceptance, appreciation, and enjoyment of characters in a show in the future, the way I did in TBBT.
Bernadette actually is my favourite.... They all are mean but they are pretentious.... She has helped everyone once atleast. She even took a stand for Howard when no one else did.... And the ep where Howard dressed as Sheldon he didn't overdo it.... Instead Amy body shamed Bernadette.... Although nobody apologies to Howard for their constant mocking
She is absolutely disgusting in season 5 episode 5 where she tries to force Howard to do her bidding and ruin his career plans. She always hides her shrewd and manipulative nature, but it becomes glaringly obvious the longer the show went on.
I had a friend who was EXACTLY like Bernadette irl. Run far and fast if you meet a real Bernadette. Funny on TV. Abusive irl. I didn't see how toxic Bernadette was until that irl friendship ended, and now I can't stand her.
This show is kind of getting a backlash, like That 70's Show, but I love how they always knew how to let go of a gimmick before it stopped being funny, and how everyone had a dark side: Bernadette's mean streak, Penny's drinking, Howard's creepiness and weird relationship with his mother, Raj emotional problems, Amy's neediness, Leonard's resentment and, well, so many things about Sheldon
wrong, i didnt like how they changed her character in later seasons, she was standing up for herself at first but later seasons she became a BULLY. every one has some kind of troublesome childhood but thats no excuse. im the oldest and had to take care of my mom and sister but i didnt become a bossy bully like bernadette
Well I liked her at the beginning, but later she was just mean, bullying her co workers to get what she wanted. Treating Howard like a child and alway everyone had to follow. Amy was annoying, but it got better. But there was one episode where I thought she and Sheldon went too far. I hated them. It was when they were testing Penny behind her back. It was the episode where Howards mum died. And Sheldon and Amy didn´t show any sorry for treating their friends like animals.

Bernatte wasn't mean, she was firm when she had to be, but she did have a ruthless streak that would show when she was protecting her man and friends, sort of like a mamma grizzly bear protecting her young cubs.
shes actually my least favorite towards the second half of the series. i wanted to love her because like her i am small in stature but she became such a bully, and it becomes so obvious comparing the episode when they find out penny was the bully in highschool and then how bernadette turned out later on
I dont wanna finish this video because it doesn't seem like it's going to confirm my bias, which is that Bernadette started off nice with a tiny bit of edge (like her crowding Raj in his apartment over the miscommunication with Howard) and eventually by season 8 and onward was just vile in a way that seemed randomly out of character (like the season 8 episode where Penny bonds with the pharmaceutical guy over how mean Bernadette is, and Bernadette insults a man's grandson to his face). Bernadette spends the last half of the series being like this, acting more and more like a b*tch. In the last half of the show, she is my least favorite character hands down.
Despite her being "mean and toxic" she is a better character than Amy or Penny. A confident pretty lady, a mother of two, a microbiologist, a friend and a wife. A good character
Amy was Harvard-educated, a wife, a neuroscientist, didn’t take Bernadette’s crap, a better friend, and grew to be confident in herself… while still retaining her values. A great character. 😂 Penny was confident, pretty, found her calling as a sales rep after acting didn’t work out, a wife, a friend, took great care of and came to understand Sheldon displaying more patience with him than the others, etc A great character 😂
I hope that’s a joke Bernadette was the most annoying and mean character out of all the girls the way she talks down to everyone and gives some lame excuse of why she is the way she is there’s no growth to the character
@@TamESQ Amy is just a hypocrite with tons of complexes and jealousy. She constantly says unpleasant things under the guise of the truth, constantly insults others, but not openly, like Bernadette, but veiledly, under the guise of her “honest opinion.” And just try to do the same with her, she'll immediately go: “Oh no, the unfortunate bespectacled girl is being offended again, how could you, how unfair". She tries to assert herself at the expense of others, perhaps unconsciously. And penny is your typical "girl next door, out of your league girl" and she knows it. She's used to getting everything in life by opening her legs. She knows that Leonard has low self-esteem and uses it. She changes by the end of the series, but still Bernadette is being honest with others and herself in my opinion. And that's why a lot of people don't like her
@@honeym7408 thank you for your concern, it's really a good thing when someone shows respect for women. But unfortunately (or fortunately) that's how life works. You need to compare if you want to know what (or who) is better
in the initial episodes Howard character is a lot creepy and a literal man-child whereas Bernadette character is the composed one who has to deal with a man-child whom she loves(?) and a mother in law who is a another burden on her own. But as the series progressed Howard character became composed, the creepiness was gone and the man-child behavior though did not completely disappear it was limited but the bernadette character became a bully. In the ending seasons she was just a plain bully, you can create reasons to justify her behavior towards her husband or her friends but the moment they showed her office behavior her character became that of a bully.

It was the episode where Howards mum died. And Sheldon and Amy didn´t show any sorry for treating their friends like animals.
It's because she started as nice and changed/written to be mean.
great episode
I pick Bernadette over Mayim Bialik, if you know you know
Wait what did she do?
@@se8846 Oooooo you wouldn’t want me to get started

I love Bernie.I understand her.I too can be bossy and abrasive.I had to care for my 3 brothers and im the oldest so i totally get it.
My Dad always said "Your in charge while were gone.Make sure your idiot brothers dont kill each other or burn the house down".
Can you do something about alley mcbeal?
no she doesnt apologize to her boss, she used manipulative tactics to still get her way!
I liked her all the way up to season 10, then she just became mean with zero redeeming actions.
Penny was confident, pretty, found her calling as a sales rep after acting didn’t work out, a wife, a friend, took great care of and came to understand Sheldon displaying more patience with him than the others, etc
A great character 😂
I hope that’s a joke Bernadette was the most annoying and mean character out of all the girls the way she talks down to everyone and gives some lame excuse of why she is the way she is there’s no growth to the character
Stop comparing women. This is no medieval slave market.
She changes by the end of the series, but still
Bernadette is being honest with others and herself in my opinion. And that's why a lot of people don't like her
@@honeym7408 thank you for your concern, it's really a good thing when someone shows respect for women. But unfortunately (or fortunately) that's how life works. You need to compare if you want to know what (or who) is better
Good that you made this video. She is real and obnoxious. A much needed detox for the presence of Amy.
Beloved? By whom? I thought Bernadette turned into a nearly unwatchable character. She was a bully, a shrew, and wholly unlikeable.
I was thinking yesterday that usually she's correct about everything
Dream woman 😅
How true strong independent women look like. 💪
in the initial episodes Howard character is a lot creepy and a literal man-child whereas Bernadette character is the composed one who has to deal with a man-child whom she loves(?) and a mother in law who is a another burden on her own.
I adore Bernadette, I’m 4ft 10, she’s everything to me.
I have a friend like her, like just like her. It's fun... In extremely small doses.
I dated a girl 1.50m, very cute... but a bit bernadette... I left her when she couldn manage the ratio of 1 compliment for each hard joke,
I love her!
Shepherd's Chapel Network !!!!!!! Do you have the Gift / Spiritual Discernment ???????
She is my favourite character.
She eas sweet at first but then she became abusive, especially with Howard. Always putting him down.
I loved those scenes when Amy stood up for herself and Sheldon and it would result in her going toe to toe with Bernadette 😂
Best character in the series. Sweet with a hint of evil. Great combo.
Bernadette was bestie.. Next video amy ferrah fowler please..
I love Bernadette, real little sparkplug, made the show a whole lot better. Amy on the other hand, yuck!
She got tons of side action,

Never thought she was mean . Just truthful.
She was a vivisector on the show. That is just an evil person.
every engineer I know makes plenty of money, so yeah, you don’t make great money compared to some unscrupulous pharmacist / drug dealer
She's a Chihuahua with the personality of rottweiler:)
She became the most unfunyy and annoying character by the end of the series. Ever since she gain the mean tone.
💜💜💜
Nicest indeed
With then two Museum pieces
She basically has little man syndrome
The hottest chick on the show
This is another awful take. It just gives excuses and placates to a female character for being a bully.
*She was super toxic. I’m surprised Howard didn’t want to kill himself by the end of the series.*
Bernadette is annoying
Worst character on the show.
