  • Dallas Mavericks Trade Rumors: The Dallas Mavericks reportedly agreed to a trade for Klay Thompson from the Golden State Warriors after another great move by Nico Harrison. What does Klay bring to the Mavs? How can he help Luka Doncic & Kyrie Irving? What problems does he solve? What problems does he not solve?
Nick Angstadt breaks down the Dallas Mavericks' recent trade for Klay Thompson. The Mavericks acquired Thompson from the Golden State Warriors in a three-year, $50 million deal. Nick discusses how Thompson's addition addresses the team's need for another shooter and scorer, comparing him to Tim Hardaway Jr. and other players. He also highlights the significance of the Mavericks securing a high-profile free agent, reflecting on past free agency struggles. The episode delves into Thompson's potential impact on the team's offense and defense, and what adjustments the Mavericks might need to make.

We get a knock-down spot up shooter, a solid defender, a champion and a chill, no problem guy.
Thompson gets a new scenery, and can enjoy even more open threes, without having to run as much, extending his career.

Something I'm not seeing talked about with the Klay trade is the trade exception being used is possibly the Bertans exception that expires on July 8th...it was a 4M exception (with 3M salary difference between Klay and Green),
This opens up the Hardaway exception to be used for another trade, and the green exception created by this trade would go to the warriors (this difference might be why they are getting a 2nd round pick when it was initially reported that dallas was getting 2)
    Masterclass by nico

    • @9OutOfBen
      @9OutOfBen 8 วันที่ผ่านมา +2

Now, the hardaway exception (16M) + Maxi's 11M contract will be able to net any player making up to 27M in a trade.
With that + 2 first round picks and a few seconds available, we could see something huge happen either now or at the trade deadline
This team appears to be set up to go all in

    • @9OutOfBen
      @9OutOfBen 8 วันที่ผ่านมา +5

@@alancrnobrnja3955 bc it's not certain yet...technically speaking, the warriors could be getting the THJ exception...BUT if that happened, then the mavs would be creating a 13.5M exception by sending Green to Charlotte...difference is 2.6M less to use...thus would make sense given klay making 16M (exactly the amount of the THJ exception).
It would still be far better if they used the bertans exception (paired with greens contract) though since it expires in a week, keep the THJ exceptions, and send the green exception to the warriors, plus a 2nd round pick. Might not happen though, and in guessing that is the current debate causing the confusion around who is getting the other 2nd round pick.

Naji Is an improvement, watch him playing, the guy is a much better and more mature ball handler, a more secure dribbler and his passing is outstanding, more similar to Luka Dončić passes, is true, he has less verticality than DJJ, but we already have lots of strong vertical players, besides, Marshall can go vertical also, just not as light vertical as DJJ. Defense, I don't think is much different, BTW, I heard that Naji has the second-largest hands in the NBA, that's one of the reasons he stills balls and passes so well. On top, his 3 points are probably better on that part also, and he will see more open space now with the Dallas of Clay Kyrie and Luka.

Wait and see...... Luka and Kyrie got completely exposed and PWNED by Boston in the finals. Luka will never win a chip or an MVP until he loses weight and learns how to be a two way player that can make it to the other side of the court without gasping for air. Until then he's simply a better version of Carmelo Anthony on the Knicks and Kyrie Irving couldn't take the pressure in Boston. FACTS. That's why the Celtics DESTROYED the Mavs and the Nuggets would have easily done the same thing. Watch Klay shoot a ton of bricks then watch Jason Kidd literally pull him off of the floor and watch other western conference teams literally dominate the Mavs in the playoffs next year. Losing DJJ will hurt the Mavs the same way that Bucks losing Jrue Holiday hurt them as well. Klay barely came off the bench the last three years and has never recovered from his ACL and Achilles injuries. GSW won the chip in 2022 because Andrew Wiggins played defense and Jordan Poole was literally the other splash brother in the 2022 finals. Klay literally only blocked ONE shot in the entire playoffs and he literally shot 0 for 9 in his last playoff game! That's why Kaminga took KT's minutes and most likely why Klay left GSW. WIth teams like OKC, and Denver, the Mavs won't make it back to the finals. Plus the east is completely stacked, Boston is keeping ALL of it's players from last season, with them literally having both the best offense and defense in the playoffs) Plus, the Knicks and Sixers literally stacking their teams it proves that Dallas has a very long way to go to remain competitive. Luka literally has to lose all of that baby fat and to start learning how to be a two way player in order to be elite. That's why he's never won an MVP and likely never will. Boston completely exposed both Luka and Kyrie. Anyone who thinks that Dallas is getting a chip anytime soon is completely hallucinating.

We still have room under the first apron and could possibly trade Maxi. If Nico was able to convert Naji to a S&T with NOLA that makes Maxi a Pelican... Which would be possible due to the TPE created by shipping Josh to Charlotte... I think we would still have the full MLE to use.

They lost djj and tim hardaway but in exchange they get a 3rd option scorer behind kyrie and luka, they get grimes & naji both great shooters and defenders. They solved their big problem which was shooting while maintaining defense by bringing in a couppe of good wing defenders ( young ones too ), they brought in a 4 time nba champion to give that veteran mentorship to this dallas team in klay. Honestly mavs could just relax now and theyd pretty much be fine already heading to the season ( though if they wanted to add another piece my guess would be another playmaker to come of the bench and facilitate for the bench when luka / kyrie are resting )

    Grimes has so much upside.
Nico really seems to be able to see what fits here... Grant beign notable exception.
PJ, Gafford, Exum. All greater in fit than cost or value as a whole.
If Hardy can develop more as a PG this is a really good roster.

  • @jimmygreer2140

Nick makes a great point. Maybe Klay can play better on defense when he's not running a million steps a game on offense. Yeah, let him do his screen game but for the most part he's gonna be spacing the court and helping the team "mix the blender".
And I think the talk about his bad defense is over-hyped. Sure, he's not all-defense. But he's still a solid defender. So the Mavs lost some defense going from DJJ to Klay but they gained a LOT of offense.
How much have the Mavs improved? Quite a bit.
THJ for Klay: Even at his worst he's as good as THJ is normally. But then there's the defense. Timmy is a turnstile. Timmy is an absolute liability. Also, Klay is a good passer. So yeah, in just about every single metric you can use...Klay is a HUGE upgrade over Timmy.
DJJ for Naji: Similar sized players. Where DJJ is better suited to guard 1-4, Naji can do 2-5. And DJJ is a better defender for sure. But Naji isn't some pushover either. He's got his defensive skills. But Naji is very likely a better 3pt shooter. So I would call this a push. Both are nice Sundaes but one has chocolate and the other has vanilla...just a taste preference.
Green for Grimes: Again, similar sized/styled players. But I think Grimes is just a bit ahead of Green in their development. Grimes is a better defender and a better shooter. Both can drive to the basket. Both are nice passers. And I think that Grimes may play a part in that point of attack defense. I feel like Dallas has really improved here
And then you've got reason to believe that Lively, OMax & Hardy will improve to varying degrees. Hell, if Lively just takes a few key steps to add to his game the Mavericks might find themselves being a SuperTeam and talk about 4 SuperStars.
I really do like this roster. Gotta wait to see what Nico can do with that remaining 4.5m in the MLE. But I think the only "holes" this roster has are: 1) a 3rd ball-handler/playmaker. Maybe that guy is Hardy but I'd rather not count on maybe. 2) a PF/C like Maxi to step in whenever Maxi is hurt. Would love to count on Maxi being there for 60-70 games cause he would be a valuable asset to have. But I can't. So I would like to have someone like a Maxi.

@@edwinblack-rw5xk And now I know you're a misinformed troll. Scores fewer points? Hmmm, I didn't realize 6.4 was more than 8.5. And when did Josh average double digit points again?
The % is way lower? Wow, didn't know that 4 thousandths of a percent is WAY lower. 371 vs Green's 375.
But I'm saying he's better shooter because Josh DOESN'T SHOOT. This year Josh took a career high 3.3 3s a game. The year before it was 2.8, the year before that it was 1.2, and his rookie season he took 0.6 3s a game. But Grimes 3s per game? Rookie year 4.1, 5.7, 4.7.
So yeah, I believe in Grimes' .371 career percentage from 3 over Green's .375 because he's taken how many hundreds more attempt? 800? 1000? In their rookie seasons alone there's like a 185-24 disparity. In year 2 there was a 377-81 disparity. I mean, that's just 2 seasons and we're pushing 500 more 3s for Grimes.
And finally, 4th team in 5 years? Uhh, 3rd team in 4 years. Lemme guess, you're a casual who thinks TOT is a team. No, that's TOTAL as in his season total because he played games for 2 teams that year. He's only played for the Knicks & Pistons so far.

I mean, for all I know, Klay is a former all-star who should be a reliable third option (even if past his prime on both ends), and I wonder if that will have a positive impact on Luka's minutes by relieving at least some of the offensive load. I guess extra energy for defensive efforts by Luka, Kyrie and Klay himself without hurting the offense would be key.

17 million for a 6'7 JJ Reddick basically. Mavs need elite defensive players, which is why youre already having discussions of can we even start klay with Luka/kyrie.

Nico is a wizard!!! He's been killing it since getting to Dallas. I wonder where those doubters are at after the Brunson thing. Kinda hard for Nico to do his job when there's tampering going on. But since then everything he does is a steal.
Dinwiddie, DFS & draft picks for Kyrie? That's a straight up steal. Then he turns Grant Williams and some spare parts into Gafford & PJ. Now it looks like he got Klay for basically Josh Green & a 2nd.
But not only that, he beat the Lakers. Dallas FINALLY was able to get a Big Fish in free agency and it was against THE marquee franchise. The culture has shifted.
Now I'm excited to see what Nico can do with the 4.5m. I feel like Klay changes things even more. Now there's probably some former all-pro who is playing at maybe 70% of what he used to be & is comfortable coming off the bench and is looking to go out on top....and he's seeing Dallas and thinking "I could go to Big D for 4.5 and get that ring or I could go to Houston for 10m".

Brunson is a far better player than Kyrie ever has, plus he would have costed the team a LOT less. Losing Brunson to the Knicks who are now completely stacked was asinine! Luka can't play both ends of the floor and Kyrie choked in the finals. FACT.

Klay isn't a big fish anymore. Big fish don't get routinely benched during crunch time on an average team.

@@edwinblack-rw5xk so he wasn't a top free agent and sought after by several teams. Whatever bot.

@@edwinblack-rw5xk Also, what a simpleton take that is. Just focusing on the TECHNICALITY of his benching and ignoring the CONTEXT of the "benching". If I recall correctly, Dray was suspended, Steph was injured and the Warriors were getting ZERO production off of the bench. So Kerr decided that his only LEGIT scorer was needed in reserve lineups.
And Klay took it like champ. Was he insulted & took it personally? Seems like it. But he wasn't a baby about it and put up some of the best games of his season.
But back to the topic at hand. Klay is still a Big Fish. A Big Fish means one of the top available players. It's not Klay's fault that this wasn't the most impressive FA class we've seen before. And the fact is, almost every single Free Agent type of player has his flaws. Teams just don't let SUPERSTARS walk unless they are absolutely FORCED to.

From THJ, Green and DJJ to Klay, Grimes and Naji. Mavs GM is doing great.
