Hi Feng, I've been watching your videos since late 2010 and I have to say you've truly inspired me to stick with video game art. I'm pursuing concept art, but unfortunately I decided in 2010 while I was in art college to do so, and at a college that didn't offer concept art only a few classes. From your videos I molded my class assignments to better me as a concept artist and now I work for a small indie company and have since I graduated. It's not much at all and I have to work three jobs 2 of which aren't art related, but I feel that if I didn't find your videos I wouldn't even have been able to have the one indie job. I watch your videos while I paint all the time and they inspire me to never quit until I'm so old that I cannot lift my pen. I hope to meet you someday to thank you in person.
Your videos are really helpful and informative, and despite there being so many episodes, I've never gotten bored and always feel like I'm learning something! I really appreciate that you take time out of your busy schedule to make these :) I always like listening to them when I draw!
Amazing episode! Feng I can't thank you enough for all the work you've done with design cinema. Have wanted to apply to your school just in no financial position to do so. Maybe one of these days... Anyway you have inspired me to pursue this as a career and I'm too far along now to give up! Thanks so much for the kind and inspiring comments.
UGHHHHHH... dude I seriously don't even know how to express myself in this comment. These drawings are just incredible. I sat here through the entire video just grinning like an idiot feeling all nostalgic and just ughhhhh >.< - this is such an amazing inspiration to me. Thank you so much!
Hey! I am about to attend laguna college of art and design (LCAD) in the next 5 days for video game design and I just wanted to thank you for the years of great work and amazing videos. I have probably watched each one at least twice! I cant wait to enter the field of video game design and continue watching your great videos. Thank you for being such an inspiration and great role model for newcomers.
Amazing as always! I work as software developer and 3d modeler, not drawing so much but maybe floorplans and basic shapes of objects before jumping in 3D, but i really enjoy watching your videos alot while working. Glad you found time to upload a new one! Always inspires me to work harder, think more about what i do and improving my skills. Thanks again, looking forward to part 2
Thank you, Feng! That was amazing, you seem like such a neat guy, thanks for taking the time to make this and share with all of us! I feel the same way about the FF games, 7 & 9 are my favorites, and when I play, or hear the music, it feels like coming home.
this is too awesome I'm sooo happy you did Final Fantasy!!! Thank you so much for taking time and do these, it's great to see the workflow of working on 9 canvases at the same time, the hectic tempo is also very good. Keeps you awake and paying attention =) love your art
Wow. Every time I see one of your videos, I'm just completely amazed. I hope to be this awesome someday, though I'm still a little stumped on all the different buttons and settings on digital software. Hopefully watching all your tutorials will help with that as well as the actual art part haha! Thanks for taking time out to help amateurs like me!
Loved the colors! Can't wait to see the detail work, I really hope you get time to show that part, most say its boring, but I'd really like to see how you tighten up your work and what goes into it!
Thank you for this episode. I enjoyed it a lot. All of those 9 drawings are really beautiful. I particularly like the second Midgar one. The stuff you said at the end made me "publish" my first picture on DrawCrowd. I'm trying to be a programmer so I don't have time to learn the fundamentals of drawing right now. I draw only when I'm depressed, because drawing makes me feel better, or when some of my friends need a drawing to cheer them up. So thank you again, can't wait for the next one.
Aw yeah can't wait for the next episode! Never really thought about it till now, but starting a reference library has been something that I haven't been able to do effectively
Hey Feng, great video :) And yes, we are drawing along with you :D (40:04) Your videos are the best inspiration and motivation for me (and the best background noise for designing as well)
This was a great episode, I've been stressing over thumbnails a lot lately but seeing this I'm definitely getting too caught up in detail. Gonna try your method of doing photo underlays for the colors, that seems like a great way to get started, and these all turned out beautifully! Love the Cosmo Canyon ones.
I'm 24, i played this a few years after it came out, id say its my second fav of the ff games. My first being ten, and my third being 3. My two fav things about these games is the scenery and the huge arcing story lines.
Three games- -BioShock 1 and 2 (exact same setting so I'm combining them for drawing purposes), my absolute favorite design of any game of all time. Never has anything seemed so atmospheric and inversive. Assassins Creed was incredible, but falls a bit short on design I think. Halo has always had an incredibly well-done mixture of technology and nature. Great for this kind of video.
Just love your stuff it's just like ... wow ! It's been from now 3 years that I had seen for the first time one of your video, and now I do my best to be in this industry, and is just became my dream :) Thank you very much :D (sorry for my bad english)
Awesome and inspiring video as usual, always get excited when I see a new one up! As far as the 3 video games i would go with most replayable so things like minecraft and maybe sims...stuff you can just build worlds out of. I'd be really interested in seeing the thought process behind designing 2d games and also how you go about establishing a design language or "look" of a game from scratch. Thanks for all you do!
Feng, I love you for talking about Neil deGrasse Tyson and StarTalk, thanks for the tip on Radiolab, sounds excellent. And in no way your rants are boring, it's actually lively, inspiring and there is always something that I can pick from your talks that I take home to improve myself. You're awesome, man (no homo) :D
PS: I'm old as dirt, so if I just go by single-player games I've played over and over for hours and hours (and don't include that Solitaire game on all the work PC computers in the 80s and 90s, lol) it would have to be: Gabriel Knight 2 (the one with the vampires), Dragon Age: Origins and the original old school Xbox version of Halo: Combat Evolved.
Great job Feng! I loved playing FF7 when I was in college. I played through the whole game in Japanese...having my friend translate for me almost scene by scene. Anyway, hope all is well. I think it's been over 11 years since I took a class from you at Gnomon. Keep up the great work. Love all the videos.
this is such a great idea. I been having such a hard time with doing a few ideas for the same place but this little set out thing is perfect with notes and such. get all my ideas going and lose 0 flow . thanks
Man, I would LOVE to see some redesigns of Mortal Kombat environments! Thank you for these videos, they have been a constant source of inspiration and great industry insight :D
You can advertise all you want! I didn't know you had Foundation 02 -book ready! I immediatly had to go get it. Also the website is looking really good! This video was just eyecandy and I got really motivated to work on my own as well.
Amazing video, Final Fantasy 7 was one of the first JRPGs I ever played so this was very nostalgic for me aswell :) the games I'd bring are Star Ocean 2, Arcanum and Animal Crossing: New Leaf
Hey Feng, I just want to say thank you for the design cinema videos. We all appreciate your commitment and sacrifice to share and inform us about what you know and do in your industry. Your advice and tutorials are more helpful than you know. Keep up the good work.
Hey. I wondered if you could talk a bit about the brush settings etc? I'd love to see an episode where you go more in depth in explaining how you achieve the different effects in real time, or even slowing down a bit. Sure, there might be other tutorials on the subject, but I'd like to hear it from you. It would also be really useful to hear you talk more about how you use perspective. I'm not really looking for an introduction to perspective, but rather a conversation about how you use it personally, what things you avoid and why etc. Other than that - great series and keep up the awesome work!
Can't wait for part 2! Thanks for the upload, great insight and advice. I've learned quite a bit from this channel. Keep'em coming! :) (Also FFVII was my favorite).
Such an awesome video again, these videos are so inspiring for an artistically challenged individual such as myself. Loving the game themed paintings. My 3 games would be Eve (10 years wouldn't be enough), maybe Guild Wars 2 and couldn't choose another, maybe Dark Souls or something.
Something to play forever? These three are propably what I'd choose; -Heroes of Might and Magic 3 -Sid Meyer's Alpha Centauri: Alien Crossfire -Age of Empire 2: Conquerors
Hello from New Zealand (aka Middle Earth)!!! Thanks so much for the videos, they're like a lifeline for those of us who can't make it to your awesome school. You are an incredibly generous person, please keep up the good work! If you ever pop over to New Zealand, pop into Starbucks where I work, I owe ya a coffee! :)
Feng! You and I listen to the same stuff while we work. Thats awesome! Oh btw, PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE pick number 9 for one of the finals. Its the best comp. I'm a FFVII fan and Cosmo Canyon was my favorite place to go to.
Three games I'd pick, from the 80s elite the space combat and trading game. This game was huge and I'd love to see you paint something within the elite universe. Second game would be from the 90s command and conquer and lastly f117 stealth fighter again from early 90s
Really great video! I'm a huge Final Fantasy fan since it was my first ever JRPG. I also share you're view on the 7th and 9th titles, those are my favorites because of the childish dreamlike fantasy they spark in me back in those days. I must say if I had only three games to play I guess, since I'm foremost a fighting games guy I'd have to take some Street Fighter III with me, Xenogears for RPG (haven't play it in years and it was awesome) and Darksiders to combine both worlds - Action and Exploring. Continue the great Design Cinema Feng. A great source of inspiration every time! ^_^
The giant gaps in between each video honestly do not bother me. In fact, I feel like it is actually a positive thing. I am subscribed to a lot of stuff on TH-cam because I love watching it all, but I do notice a trend. Basically, anything that comes out infrequently will be more intriguing than something you see everyday. So, I am actually glad that you at least put out content consistently "not on time." I would never get bored of this stuff, but if it were 15 to 30 minute videos popping up in my sub box 2-3 times everyday, I probably wouldn't have as much appretiation for them.
Lol, I was checking almost every week for this. So glad to see FF7. I first played FFVII a year ago actually. It was great, definitely has a lasting value. "Feng you lazy bastard" XD I lol'd so hard lol. Dude's like making video games, running a school, starting 2 websites and publishing books and this awesome video series. Feng is like the opposite of lazy. Good job sir, keep up the hard work. Don't forget to love your family and sleep! Family first!
Thank you so much for this episode Feng ! I love this game it's my best game and first Final Fantasy i have played. Can't wait to see the next episode. It was Nibelheim not Cosmo Canyon with Tifa ;).
Awesome! I miss these kinds of games where they take you on an adventure (even without mind-blowing graphics), Like books, it gave me a chance to think what the places would actually look like if I was there with Cloud and the gang. On as side note, anyone remember Xenogears? T'was a great game as well... would love to see one of these Let's Draw stuff on that game! :)
i was exposed to millions of ff7 spoilers and memes online-- who dies, who's the main villain, etc-- before i had the chance to even play it, so i skipped the whole thing. metal gear solid 1 was just as iconic and groundbreaking as ff7 at the time, but i was still able to play through mgs1 for the first time in 2003, without having the story spoiled to oblivion. ...anyway, great to see another edition of fzd! the art and techniques are amazing, but i come back for the great advice and wisdom.
Feng! Great work. You mention lenses somewhere around the end. Scott Robertson also mentions it from time to time in his channel. From working with 3D and photography I understand the concept but as soon as I work on a canvas I'm not confident on how to "set a good lens". Any tips?
I think Feng's commentary is the real reason his videos are so valuable. His painting process is great to watch, but what he says is the ticket
Final Fantasy VII .... I nearly choked with how awesome I knew this was going to be. Great to see a new video.
I love how on every scene you can clearly see the eye drawing composition, awesome
Thank you Feng, i really enjoy all your demo, course and tutorial. You are an amazing artist and i want to thank you for all your effort!

Anyway you have inspired me to pursue this as a career and I'm too far along now to give up! Thanks so much for the kind and inspiring comments.
Feng, you are a gift to the concept art world! Your dedication and warm-heartedness is inspiring :) Keep up the good work!
wow Feng best episode ever! (so far)
I like when you get a bit more personal and thoughtful, inspirational tips are so helpful
UGHHHHHH... dude I seriously don't even know how to express myself in this comment. These drawings are just incredible. I sat here through the entire video just grinning like an idiot feeling all nostalgic and just ughhhhh >.< - this is such an amazing inspiration to me. Thank you so much!
I've only started to realize how good we have it for Feng to make these videos for free for us.
I'm a watercolor sketcher. I watched your video because your artwork is so beautiful.
Hey Feng, glad to see you back here. Amazing work again, I can't believe I watched this whole show but every second is well worth the time.
Hey! I am about to attend laguna college of art and design (LCAD) in the next 5 days for video game design and I just wanted to thank you for the years of great work and amazing videos. Epic music, epic game and epic redesign. Feng is awesome!

Love Final Fantasy 7!! Thanks Feng!!

feng, you are amazing, buddy, i'm listening to you in the background and painting. it's so motivating, really thanks a lot!
A new Feng Zhu's video is always like a new kick ass Christmas gift !!! Thank you a thousand times, Jedi Master !!! :-)
I'm 24, i played this a few years after it came out, id say its my second fav of the ff games. My first being ten, and my third being 3. My two fav things about these games is the scenery and the huge arcing story lines.
Honestly Feng, I am just excited to see you put a video up whenever they come.
Thank you very much, can't wait for the next part to come out!

+1 here. Yes that is actually pretty awesome. Thank you so much. I wish I lived in Singapore :-)
It's honestly amazing how inspiring this is. Pleaseee please please keep this up! :)
This video is fantastic! I really love this Channel, it helped a lot. Thank you very much!
Feng you've made my day!
Great job Feng! I loved playing FF7 when I was in college. I played through the whole game in Japanese...having my friend translate for me almost scene by scene.

Thanks so much for posting - you've great communication skills on top of all your pro skill armoury.
Man, I would LOVE to see some redesigns of Mortal Kombat environments! Thank you for these videos, they have been a constant source of inspiration and great industry insight :D
I can't wait to try this, this is amazing.

This video was just eyecandy and I got really motivated to work on my own as well.
Thank you for posting this
Awesome awesome awesome! Fantastic video. And yeah you're pronouncing ShinRa about right. Very cool to watch your process as always.
Last game I really enjoyed was Mirror's Edge because of the level design, colors, moods.
There was always something on the levels that brought me in.
man i wish i could study at your school. great episode feng. and draw crowd is awesome!
Really looking forward to the next episode! =)
Thanks so much for the advice around 35-40 minutes in the video. Really useful. :)
A few hours ago I was thinking: "Man, FZD could make a new video."
(Also FFVII was my favorite).
Something to play forever? These three are propably what I'd choose;
-Heroes of Might and Magic 3
-Sid Meyer's Alpha Centauri: Alien Crossfire
-Age of Empire 2: Conquerors
Great episode feng!

Continue the great Design Cinema Feng. A great source of inspiration every time! ^_^
Yeahh a new video. :))
Thank you for this nice Episode. :D
I don`t know how much much i will take to painting like this kind of work.
Let's plays are everywhere; not to say they are not of certain quality, it's just that they are so frequent that you become desensitized to them. So, I am actually glad that you at least put out content consistently "not on time." I would never get bored of this stuff, but if it were 15 to 30 minute videos popping up in my sub box 2-3 times everyday, I probably wouldn't have as much appretiation for them.
yesss!! a new episode AND it's Final Fantasy VII :)
Lol, I was checking almost every week for this. So glad to see FF7.
I first played FFVII a year ago actually. It was great, definitely has a lasting value. Beat FFVI days ago as well, and loved it too. I probably like the world of FFVI slightly more.
As for your 3 games question:
-Street Fighter III 3rd Strike
-Dark Souls
-Persona 3
There are probably 3 more that I could switch in...but to stick to your rules I will not list them.
That was great episode, its soo cool that part 2 will be next week:)! Thx
Best TH-cam channel ever !
that was amazing, can"t wait for part 2. :-D
Awesome episode, thank you. As for my three games, they'd have to be Sims 3 (with expansions), Final Fantasy X and Kingdom hearts.
Thank you so much for this episode Feng ! I love this game it's my best game and first Final Fantasy i have played. Can't wait to see the next episode.
It was Nibelheim not Cosmo Canyon with Tifa ;).
Wonderful episode XP

Everything about FF VII was perfect.
Hey Feng, awesome tutorials. Could you post the high res version of the painting as well?
Wow, I didn't know DrawCrowd is developed by FZD. I'm totally loving that site!
Wow. Didn't realized you used to live here in Austin. Would love to get a chance to meet you if you ever make it back.
