i played this for my daughter who's an actor and she says it reminds her of the Meisner repetition technique where you and your scene partner repeat the same observation over and over to concentrate fully on the other person, forgetting yourself in the process, helping form an emotional connection. there's definitely an emotional connection here.
Why Lil' Beethoven isn't heralded alongside Night At The Opera, Sgt. Peppers, DSotM, Who's Next, Zep 4 etc etc etc is a total mystery to me. Absolutely one of the Greatest albums ever made. And the bravest.
One could argue that Sparks isn't regarded as a classic rock band like the others you mentioned, as they moved beyond rock music in the late 70s and would continue with synth pop in the 80s. Rock fetishists have a problem with bands moving beyond that genre, so Sparks never got the praise and recognition they deserved.

Probably hardly anything. But define weird. There's plenty of 80s music that's brill and different and fresh cos that was what the 80s was about before novelty records, slagdonna and Pete Waterman killed off the rest of the decade slowly.
It shouldn't work. But by god it does. Taking some inspiration from Steve Reich I feel with the "beauty in repetition" motif, but this ends up being really emotional by the time the climax arrives - and the live version is simply hypnotically gorgeous, I think you need to be in a crowd to truly get the most out of this.
I remember loving the end of Equator, and here they are again doing the same kind of thing, but even better. Absolute musical geniuses. If only I could remember the words I would be singing along.

Sparks in a nutshell! Exactly like 'Brenda's Always In The Way', even though there is more lyrics, but the most part is basically the same, with a few varieties, and also the part differences from the rest with lyrics that reveal something about the situation. 'My Baby's...' and Brenda's Always...' have that in common that they are built on a monotonous and repetative base presented in varied rhythm and how Russell puts the intonation. Especially this one distinguish a LISTENER from someone who HEARS music but don't register WHAT they actually hear. They only pick up the top layer, notes it's monotonous, automatically rejects it as boring and weird, without having an idea of what they actually were hearing. Sometimes Sparks music demands some active listening.
In its´ simplicity, absolutely a fabulous song. The only text in the song, other than a spoken interlude, is the sentence; "My baby´s Taking Me home" is repeated more than 100 times throughout the song, only with slight variations in tune.
What about all the SINGLES (this wasn't one) that didn't, and all the B-sides and soundtrack movie songs. So, no, this can only go on if they're gonna do a 6 CD collection!
