Being a Female Brony

  • This is a short clip out of an interview I did almost a year ago. My story isn't unique. Women have been doing this sort of thing for centuries for various reasons. Male disguises are especially common among gamers.
    I wanted to practice talking animation. After the first few seconds I was satisfied, so I filled it up with clips from about half of the pony animations I've done over the past five years. I thought I could fit all 80 of them, but wow, was I wrong!
    The interview was on I'm Brony and I'm Proud: • I'm Brony and I'm Prou...

    I remember playing COD at my cousin's birthday party for the first time, I'm mostly into Overwatch, but I tried COD and went on voice chat, almost immediantly I was met with 8 year old acting males who insulted me for making a slight mistake such as running from a car into the open in the middle of fire, now there was an older female there, slightly encouraging me and kept saying to ignore them. One time I messed up pretty badly and we lost, one of the boys went all out crazy shit on me. Calling me a stupid whore and, "Keep watching MLP and get off this game idiot!" Lucky for him, I fired back instantly, yelling at him to leave me alone and this is my first time playing COD I mostly play Overwatch. He kept on insulting me and finished it off with, "Girls aren't meant to play games, go stick to cooking." Now, you will not imagine the rage level I went on him. This is what I said, word for word, "You know what, you little 8 year old shit? You can go keep fucking your toys because I'm going to keep playing this game til I get better. Even a newborn baby has more sense than you (got a headshot) you little brat. You should be the one to get off this crap of a game you sexist motherfucker!" After that, silence then I hear a quiet whisper saying, "What does sexist mean?" I almost laughed at that point and the older female gamer began to tease him with bigger words. In the end, he logged off and almost instantly we won

      Crowne Prince to be honest I still go as female on most sites. It's actually pretty fun. Mostly because I'm very anti social justice and anti censorship and pro gamergate. So if I criticized a popular feminist for wanting censorship they couldn't just call me a sexist patriarchal white cis male and move on. I mean now my female avatars just get accused of having internalized misogyny. Oh and it's always fun to see guys who vehemently disagree with my male profiles suddenly change there opinions on the fly when my female profile says the exact same thing worded differently.

      You'd Be Amazed How Many Guys Just Simply Prefer To Be The Girl When Playing Anything From A Video Game To D&D. I Think It's Just A Guy's Fem Side Showing As A Result Of All The Presser To Be "Manly" (Mostly From Idiots That Don't Know The Meaning Of The Word). But That's Just My Theory So If You Think You Do It For Other Reasons It's All Good.

      ***** its not that type of thing, their just people who show off way too much and think their great and basically try to be cool, on my side, it kind of goes from a deeper perspective as to that of 'bullying' its kind of where guys bully you and you wish you weren't one yourself and at the same time you just can't be bothered about all these relationships and you end up getting annoyed by everyone in the end, however I wouldn't say its all a bad thing, in the end you become more of a sensitive and caring person

      Let's homogenize women into every subset of male identity until it becomes completely watered down and ceases to exist. Men are so repulsive there shouldn't even be words to describe them; but don't tell women to go back to the kitchen, that would be sexist.

    Because I wasn't a very strong independent person growing up, I never stood up for myself. I used to ask guys if it was ok with them that I was a girl if we started talking online. I used to make sure they were comfortable talking to a girl. Most of the time they didn't even understand why I would ask and they were all fine with it but occasionally I got a different answer and I think there is something so completely wrong about that I can't stand thinking about it.

  • @SammyJ_Studios
    @SammyJ_Studios 7 ปีที่แล้ว +31

    I never had problems with sexist comments, but then again the only people I was allowed to have contact with online when I was younger were friends I knew in real life. After that, I still didn't get many sexist comments unless they were obviously jokes. More often, people assumed I'm a man because my username is sexless. Even in my videos people think I'm a dude because my hands don't look feminine enough. Thankfully my voice gives it away, but since my voice is deep for a woman, I've been asked once or twice whether I'm a woman or a young boy.

    • @rottenfiggy
      @rottenfiggy 7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I think some people tend to look at the way you talk and what kind of topics you discuss before they assume your gender online. Despite my username, I am still more consistently referred to as male rather than female.

      +GirlBrony (Cringelord) I actually do that. Except I seem to have an uncanny knack for getting their gender (or even their nationality) right. I can literally message someone online, and within a couple of their replies I can tell whether their a male or female, usually I can tell their country, and sometimes even their age range. Don't know why I said all this but... I've wrote it now, so... yeah.

    In the later days of ROBLOX, people harassed me, because I was the highest level of this 1 game... People asked my gender, they said I was too good for being a female, therefore I must be a hacker. During this time, my grandma died, so I told them I just played to escape reality, they said they were happy she died, and said I should go into a kitchen. You know what? I wrecked their asses. On the next pvp game, I killed Em all fair and square. I have sent real proof and evidence to their parents, (for some idiotic reason, they left contacts to their parents) then again, they never tried to insult me again.

    • @Tennouseijin
      @Tennouseijin 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I think two of the biggest problems Christianity faces right now are:
      1. People who declare themselves as Christians, but don't care about Jesus's teachings. They only claim to be Christians because of the tradition, social pressure etc.
      As Jesus said, "(John 13:35) By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another" , not "if you call yourself Christian". Therefore, I'd say there are millions of people who call themselves Christians, but in fact are not. (By the way, there's a similar problem with Islam - millions of people who call themselves Muslims, but really are not).
      2. People who ignore one of Jesus's commands "(Luke 9:5) If people do not welcome you, leave their town and shake the dust off your feet as a testimony against them."
      Which roughly translates to - only preach to people who are willing to listen. Leave alone those, who aren't interested. Even if they are sinners. Even if they are murderers. You're not supposed to convert people to Christianity against their will. Focus your efforts on helping those who accept your help.
      Well, sadly too many Christians focus their efforts on preaching to the atheists which only annoys them and causes them to hate religion that much more. This includes many children whose parent's tried to forcefully push their religion onto their children, which in the end caused the children to grow up into staunch atheists.

      Or because you're very young and an opportunity for someone to be sexist to you just hasn't come yet, and that 2016 is a little bit. . . _different_ from most years.

    all my friends are into well... guy stuff like football (or soccer) and drinking. i'm the same as them but REALLY into a show typically meant for little girls. the only people i'm happy talking to about MLP are others who have already told me there into the fandom, unless they tell me there a fan i'll never talk about it, and it just chips away at me every day, absolutely loving a show and it's community and not being able to talk or even bring it up to any of my friends or family because i'm so insecure about it.
    and i have thought about opening up to someone who isn't behind a screen because i feel like they will reject me if i told them about it. I honestly don't know what to do, it just wears me down not being able to open up to anyone unless i cant see there faces. if you met me face to face you would have no idea i was a brony because i never...ever talk about it off the internet (although i might make a few references hear and there) but what bothers me the most is that one of the things i love most in my life was introduced to me, by someone who wanted to sexually exploit me. thanks for reading.

    • @CrownePrince
      @CrownePrince  7 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      That's tough! If I don't know how my friends will react to something, I'll say something vague like, "I've been watching this cartoon on the internet," and if my friend says, "Haha, cartoons are so stupid!" I'll laugh and not talk to them about cartoons anymore. Sounds like your current friends won't be open to it, though.
      Being a teenager is hard. It gets better. You end up with different kinds of friends. Each group likes different things.

    There was a discrimination against girls playing video games at some stage? When did that happen? My sister and I grew up with Sega Master System back in the early 90s, she couldn't get enough of it and we never found anything wrong with that.

    • @laurabriggns6973

      It's pretty rare that a grown man would do that during games. It's the 12 year-olds.

      Girls get favoured treatment in nearly every aspect of life, video games are one of the few places that are actually an equal playing field. So when someone goes out of their way to tell everyone in the server that they're a girl, its a request to bring that special treatment into games too. Obviously this is going to be met with resistance unless she does something only a girl can do, like post her breasts.
      You can tell anyone in the server that you're going to rape them, but only one gender will cry and pretend like you actually meant it.

    The point is, though, the mlp series was made directed towards a female audience. Sure, a young female audience, but still female.
    If bronies tried to attack you for being a female mlp fan, it would be ridiculous.
    In terms of our mlp fandom, males suffer the most hate. And I absolutely despise that fact. Many of my male friends and even family members can't enjoy this great show because of either their friends or their own family begin teasing them and calling them things, or even forbidding them from watching the show because it is "for girls".

    • @lazuligamez3513

      I hate that stuff like this happens. I'm a girl who watches "Ninjago" and "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles" and I've probably gotten a few weird looks when I point out a cool shirt in the "boys" section of a clothing store. I've been lucky to avoid too much confrontation, but I've gotten hit a few times.

    @dragoniraflameblade 7 ปีที่แล้ว +8

    That's a lot like how I grew up, too. I still get those looks when I tell (usually older) women that I play video games. I can just SEE their respect for me drop a notch or two. Especially after I finish telling them I'm a writer and artist. They go from "Oh interesting," to "You're not even here". I guess it still bothers me.

    I have never had that kind of stereotypical view on women, since I grew up surrounded by women in my family (my aunts, my sister, my grandma, my mom), and they have always showed me they are more than capable to do anything anybody else can do.
    Specifically in regards to gaming, my mom taught me how to find secret rooms in Wolfenstein 3D, since she had beat it several times. I only beat it once, and it took me a whole day after school for that.
    My sister and I were always trying to beat each other's High Score in Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 2 (demo, at the time), and we eventually beat Half-Life by helping each other in dificult areas. She had a hard time doing the long jumps, so I'd do those for her and we'd keep on playing.
    Now, my sister is really good at God of War and she loves that game series, while I can't even get myself out of the first screen, even with her telling me what to do!
    I honestly could care less what a person's gender is and what they like to do (as long as it's not harmful to others, of course). I like seeing people enjoying themselves and being good at what they enjoy doing, because in the end, that's what really matters!

      Only a couple years back that he really got into playing, when he was working and studying in another city. Since he was by himself there, he didn't have much to do in his free time, so he started playing some games his classmates gave him, and he really got into the Hitman series because of that.

    This is so weird when I hear stories like this. I have to question if I grew up in some weird bubble. I've never once been told or talked down to for being a girl who plays video games or participate in forums or even in male-only teams. I've never hidden the fact that I was a woman. I've always been treating like an equal, even in a group of only men. I'm a child of the 90's, when the boom of video games and anime was just happening so it's not like I wasn't in a time where "girl gamers" were common like it is today. I feel bad for you and the situation you were in, I just can't understand how you were treated differently because you were female. It's terrible and I dont understand why it happened.

      It sounds like we grew up in the same time, so part of it is the different games we played. Non-online games were all fine for me. Online MMORPGs and online chat forums were where I learned to always choose a male avatar.

      TableWrens I remember when I tried FFXI and played a Mithra. And people were shocked that I was a girl playing. Everyone was super nice, they even helped me grind. I only stopped playing because my computer didn't enjoy the game. But that was my only mmorpg.

    I had a similar problem when I joined the Fandom, 5 years ago: when people found out that I watched (and I still watch) mlp they started to making fun on me. I just tried to ignored them, I was like:"dudes, I watch whatever I like, just like you do. Why don't you try, and watch an episode?" In that way, I "converted" one of my high school teachers to the Fandom. After that, I never cared if other people joked about me, also because I found myself happy into the brony Fandom. Today I write fanfictions and original stories on Wattpad. I can't be anything but happy for you.

    I must be super lucky because every other woman seems to have gotten hate or criticism for liking something boyish, and here I am, having been boyish since I can remember and literally have never gotten a single criticism.
    Very nice animation by the way!

    thankfully the general gender thinking on the internet has changed a lot in the past 10 years. I mean there are still some "HAY A GURL LETS CYBER" people but compared to the time around 2000, it´s gotten better

      You are always going to find that little group of loud jerks in each fandom. Because of the rotten few there are people that view the ENTIRE fandom as them. It just snowballs from there. Each side pushes back, only leaving scars for the next.
      If you despise people for the jerks I understand. I'm sure some won't try to add onto that or fuel you to be even more angry.
