Totally agree that Point of Entry is underrated. "Heading Out to the Highway" is a killer Priest tune ! Iconic ! Sums up the badass biker philosophy the band has cultivated.
BTW "Turning Circles" is an AMAZING deep track ! A highlight among the top tunes on Point of Entry, along with "Heading Out to the Highway", "Desert Plains", "Solar Angels" and above "hot Rockin'"

I grew up in the 80s and Judas Priest was my first concert at age 12. My grandpa worked at a huge steel mill in Indiana and he used to bring home stacks of the printer paper just like on the Point of Entry cover for my brother and I to use as drawing paper. When I first saw the cover of the album I loved it, because it stood out like a sore thumb and it reminded me of the steel mill printer paper I used to draw on when I was a kid. I still think it is one of their best, maybe because they were drunk and just let it fly rather than overthinking it.

At age 14, in 1980, I bought the United and Breaking the Law singles. In 1981, I opted to go straight for the Point of Entry album, rather than the singles. God! I played that album over and over. It was brilliant. When I saw them at the Glasgow Apollo, they opened with Solar Angels. So loud, so great! Crowd going wild! My favourite song on the LP was Desert Plains. Point of Entry is still my favourite heavy metal album of all time. I was surprised years later when I read some negative things about it. I bought the LP with the sunrise cover. In 1997, I bought the CD with the computer paper cover. I agree that neither cover was particularly impressive, but the music was (and remains) great.

Solar Angels, Desert Plains & Heading Out To The Highway are some of their best songs. The rest of the album has a lot of melodic songs that rock. I saw that tour 8th row center, they opened with Solar Angels & the SDSU theater was shaking! Sadly though it's obvious JP channeled the dark supernatural to write & play the music. There is an interesting story I have read a couple of times during all these years, once in Neil Daniels’ book “Judas Priest - defenders of the faith” and the other one many years before that and it is related to the song writing for the successor of British steel; according to those stories the band had written riffs and also a few lyrics before arriving to Ibiza but they saw all that work was way too similar to what was British steel so they scraped everything and restarted from zero. I wonder what that album could’ve had been if they had decided to go on from those initial riffs and lyrics. In any case, it shows how brave this band is as they do not stick with a formula like other bands.

If tracks You Say Yes and Trouble Shooter were removed it would be a great atmospheric album that has a Lost in a haunted desert feel, not to be confused with Desert Rock which has nothing to do with actually being in the desert. A cover of Reo Speedwagon - Riding the Storm Out would have been a better idea than You Say Yes

I love this album. There is something about it that grew on me really quickly. The “road-trip” atmosphere it creates maybe? I love the rhythm guitar tone. I also love the catchiness and sing-along melodies. Sure, it’s not blistering heavy but that’s ok with me, because not everything that kicks ass has to be played with breakneck speed and aggression, that’s what Painkiller is for 😁. These are the kind of hard rock songs that get stuck in my head and repeat over and over, which for me is NOT a bad thing!! But yea, the band may have been on autopilot but that should be a testament to their insane talent bc it’s still good IMO!

Aside from "Heading Out to the Highway," "Solar Angels" and "Desert Plains," I fucking hated this album. Bought it on faith on the day it came out, listened to it, and was like, "What the hell is THIS?!?!" To this day, only Turbo, Ram It Down, and Nostradamus rank at this level or lower in my esteem.
Still saw the tour, though. Good thing, too, because it introduced me to this savage little band that played circles around the Priest. A little band called Iron Maiden.

As an old school JUDAS PRIEST freak that goes way back...I bought this album the day it came out! Rushed home and was so excited to hear the next level after British Steel. After the last song was over, I sat in silence. I couldn't believe what I just listened to. Not hate...but disappointed as my favorite band shit the bed. I didn't understand the artwork, the bad lyrics, the basic drumming...just a mish-mash of bad songs. Even the videos were bad. Come on guys...even half the comments on here are saying how the live versions were great...but...some of the worst tracks they've released until Turbo which was a whole different story. I saw the tour that year twice in NYC. Sat right behind Wendy O Williams on one. The tour was great...but im sure even they knew they needed a better release next. SFV was a HUGE improvement!

I'm swedish so I naturally have the european cover, which is ok I guess, a bit mysterious maybe. I kind of want to get an american copy as well so I can have the stupid paper trail in the desert and the random boxes on the back too. Good songs on that album, can't pick a favourite really.

i am probably one of the rare people that thinks that european cover of the album was amazing. for me its in top 5 covers of JP. it oozes of 80s and retro art, and is very abstract and mysterious. id love to have it hanging on the wall of my apartment. anyway, thats my perception of it. im aware that most people dont see it this way. maybe its nostalgia from my childhood some 30 years ago, cause i couldnt figure it out what it is on the cover. desert plains if by far the best song on album for me. and i like the album in whole, even if it sounds more like its written for the radio.

I've been hearing for years that Point of Entry sounds too much like British Steel and I've never quite understood why. I've always found the album a bit more eclectic than British Steel, like the band was reaching out (reaching out for alcohol is more like it, but still...) beyond what they had already done. Heading Out To The Highway and Desert Plains in particular are my favorites, while Troubleshooter and On The Run are also fun takes for me. The only song I really don't like is You Say Yes, which I can easily believe was written while drunk.

They weren't afraid to challenge the listener, and not just do the same thing every album. It was made during a time when there was still a lot of room to experiment (and make mistakes) in heavy metal, before there were fan expectations of how this or that was supposed to sound, with all these sub-genres, etc. Metal was still in its "wild west" phase, and Point of Entry very much exemplifies that spirit!

I don't think that Halford and the rest are being truthful when it comes to the production of this album (and I think that Halford's autobiography is full of falsehoods and exaggerations).
I feel they're only saying it wasn't a great effort simply because that's how everyone else accused it of being, both then and now. If the album had been a hit, I'm pretty sure they'd be calling it one of their greatest efforts.
Whilst I don't deny that they were distracted by various things, that doesn't in itself cause for bad music and albums. Iron Maiden were constantly distracted by alcohol and other things when making Powerslave, and look how that turned out (a classic).
No, I think they simply chose a direction to go, and it turned out not to be the directing fans and critics wanted. People wanted an equally hard-hitting follow-up to British Steel, but instead Halford and co were inspired by locations such as Halford's then-home in Phoenix, America. So many of the songs are clearly an ode to driving and living around those parts.
Anyway, like all of these videos, I wish this guy would spend more time talking about his thoughts on the actual songs on the album rather than just facts, some of which are easy to learn on wikipedia, etc.
For instance, Desert Plains is one of the greatest Priest songs of all time, period.

Since it's not a heavy album per se, it is somehow become the 'right' thing to say that it's 'bad' or whatever but of course it's not bad it's just different and there really aren't two Priest albums that sound the same (maybe the Ripper ones) that's the good thing about this band's variety from release to release. I think it depends on when you become a fan, if Painkiller or later stuff is your introduction you won't have an understanding of what music sounded like in the past. I remember this album being quite well-received by fans at the time, later on though as they progressively got heavier it naturally started to stick out more.

I really only like 2 songs from this album (Desert Plains and Solar Angels, in that order). Heading Out To The Highway ranks a very close 3rd place. The rest seem a little hokey, some even cringey, lol. But it is what it is. I just wish it was better.

something curious about the US cover is a supposed sexual insinuation, where we can visualize a woman's legs (the dark part of the image) and a woman's skirt (the mountains and the sky), where the "point of entry" is in a suggestive place...

I always skipped this one when I bought Judas priest albums almost 30 years ago.british steel, screaming for vengeance, and especially defenders of the faith are the 80s albums to own.Absolutely avoid turbo and ram it down but if I had to buy another 80's priest album it would be this one it's the only other one.

Nah I don't agree with avoiding "Turbo" or "Ram It Down" They both have fantastic tunes ! "Private Property", "Wild Nights, Hot and Crazy Days", "Out In the Cold", "Turbo Lover/ Locked In"... just great !... And "Blood Red Skies" and "Hard As Iron" are among my top... well 25 Priest Tunes for sure !
"Can't explain, it's something in my blood. Wouldn't change it even if I could !" That really resonates with me !
