  • The Buckeyes have to wait all week to find out their fate after getting blown out in the second half of the regular-season finale against rival Michigan. Can Ohio State get enough help to sneak back into the College Football Playoff, or will the program need to start making plans already for 2023 instead?
Bill Landis and Austin Ward ask the questions looming over Ohio State this week in Tuesday, Nov. 29, 2022 episode of THE Podcast Daily.

    Questions:
    1. Why doesn't the quarterback run? Fear? Coached not to run?
    2. Loved Michigan's trick play. When was the last time Ohio had one?
    3. Why don't any reporters ask real questions at Ryan Day's press conferences?

Let’s face it, Michigan has figured out Ryan days offense. He only did well against don brown. Last year Mike Macdonald locked up his offense and Jesse Minter did the same thing this year. As long as Minter is at Michigan and Ryan day is calling the plays, Michigan is going to continue to dominate! Michigan coordinators are coaching circles around Day.

I propose taking a new look at the situation of Michigan and Ohio for the last 20 years Michigan has been in transition ever since Lloyd Carr retired. Meanwhile Ohio State continue to chug along getting bigger get better getting the top recruits Michigan has been through what three coaches Rich Rodriguez Brady Hoke now Jim harbaugh. During that time the team has had no identity whatsoever with Rodriguez wanting to tear the team down and running a spread option offense kind of like Oregon or army. Brady Hoke had no clue what he was doing. And it took JH 4-5 years to finally settle on what he was gonna do. Which is mimick his pro coach brother John Harbaugh and built a power 5 defense while running it down the throat on offense. Ohio State didn't get weaker. Michigan caught up and passed the buckeyes. Ohio state use to scare Michigan the last 20 years. There not scared anymore. That's the problem.

This is all on Day. He refuses to coach players hard and sometimes hurt feelings, to get the best from players. We have no dbs and Day refused to use the portal , he told Mick to lighten up on the team workouts. If Day's stubbornness or ego don't change he won't be here in couple seasons.

Here's more negative fallout from the game..... Two recruits who made visits to Ohio State on Saturday for the Michigan game have committed to the Wolverines since the game ended. Both players are from Ohio. “(Ohio State) did this to all of the in-state (recruits). They put us on the back burner and will wait until the last second because they think they have us committed there if they offer, which I think is totally stupid. That is not how that works at all,” Hamilton told Mark Perez-Krywany of the Morning Journal. “I’ve talked to linemen all around Cleveland and people that I know and they all feel the same way. … I think Ohio State is taking too long and I don’t think they are doing it right.”
In contrast, Hamilton said he felt at home in Michigan from the start.
“At Michigan, I always feel like I am at home. Even before I got the offer, I always felt like I was at home,” Hamilton said. “Going to Ohio State, I was kind of on edge on whether they were going to treat me good or they were going to treat me bad. As soon as I walked in the door, I could tell that there was not good energy.”
Just as worrying for Ohio State is that Hamilton was not the only Ohio-based recruit to commit to Michigan in light of Saturday’s game.
This is certainly a marked change from where things were not that long ago. In fact, Urban Meyer had been critical of Michigan’s lack of effort in Ohio, noting that the Buckeyes essentially monopolized top recruits in the state. Perhaps Ohio State got lazy after Meyer’s departure, or Jim Harbaugh bolstered his efforts. Maybe it is a combination of both, but the result is not great for the Buckeyes.

after watching the all-22 I truly believe it was our offense that let us down. They could not score in the 2nd half at all. The defense gambled and lost on 5 plays but they were not pushed around and driven on like last year. The defense gave enough stops to give the offense enough opportunity put it away and they squandered it. I also see Knowles as super intelligent and will conform to a defense that is super effective in the Big 10. However, that performance Saturday was horrible. Knowing the lack of talent we have in the secondary, the lack of actual sacks we've had all year aginst any style qb, AND knowing your opponent has a mobile QB and fast enough WR's. What were you thinking? Especially after getting burnt the 1st time. People at the game said the Mich wr's were open the entire game, a high school qb could have completed a pass. Can someone ask him that question?

  • @rickygeiger1243
    @rickygeiger1243 ปีที่แล้ว +1

What has been so frustrating is that I can find numerous times over the last few years where I basically advocated for OSU playing this style of defense. The reason was because of their offensive efficiency and strengths. This year, those all disappeared and they did they opposite of what is complementary to this style. The entire philosophy here on defense is, "hey, we are comfortable getting into a shootout with you, but we are going to stall out enough drives that at the end of this high scoring game, the offense did better against their defense than their offense did against OSUs." The emphasis on field position on offense this year was staggering IMO. Maybe I'm just not remembering things well, but they used to be very, very aggressive on 4th down. Now, it looks like Day cant wait to punt. Punt for WHAT? the defense is built to be all or nothing. This LESSENS the impact of field position. Donovan Edwards TDs are TDs. 12yards, 52 yards, 92 yards. Doesn't matter. The goal with this defense is simply to allow the dynamic offense to go win the games. Do we realize how much of an advantage it is as a playcaller to be hyperaggressive on 4th down? It opens up the playbook so much more on early downs. This year, it felt like they were constantly desperate to get back "on schedule." It made 0 sense.
Also, the personnel decisions everywhere on the field were horrible. There is a very, very simple rule of thumb that coaches should live by when thinking about who to play or what to do. What does the other team NOT want me to do? How do you guys think Michigan feels about Marvin Harrison JR coming off the field on 4th and 1 for Mitch Rossi? They feel FAN FREAKING TASTIC about it. I promise. How does the other team feel when Mike Hall leaves the field. They feel pretty good about it. The offensive scheme this year has been horrible. I'm not sure if Justin Frye and Ryan day forgot they aren't at Boston college anymore or what, but they run the ball WAY too much. IDC what anyone says. The Chiefs, the Bills, the Dolphins, ect ALL throw the ball like 15% more than Ohio State. Ohio State should throw the ball 55-60% of the time in competitive games for a LOT of reasons. Ohio State is built to throw the ball. They recruit elite passer and pass catchers, this year it was pretty clear to me that the line as a whole was much better in pass pro. It isolates these elite talents. This is another key point. Ohio State's advantages come in talent, ability, skill, ect. This is the case. Being tough is great. They need to be tough. Trying to make your identity this tough guy mentality isn't necessary or needed because it simply isn't where the edge lies. Ohio State gets physically unique players. Players that move ways that other guys dont move, that do things other players cannot do. Do you know what isn't super hard to do as a 3 star recruit at a big ten school? Get really freaking strong and be a tough guy. You know what isn't? Being 6'2 220 and running in the 4.3s with freaky skills. Ohio State has THOSE guys. The 320 pound lineman on Michigan's roster can be just as strong as Paris Johnson. That is like the easiest thing. Why are we asking these sports cars to become cement mixers? Everyone WANTS sports cars! They just can't get them so they work with what they have. go drive CIRCLES around these teams and stop trying to bend the knee to become the program that people that still have the VHS tape of the 2002 game on repeat in their man cave want you to be.

Michigan did a nice job in neutralizing him and keeping him quiet throughout the game he had flashes of moments of tackles here and there but he didn't do what I thought he was going to do and be a game changer. As for play calling I think in the first half find a call of good game plan attack on Perimeter attack on those on the edge with your running. The problem I see was once Michigan adjusted to being attacked outside the numbers and on the perimeter with those bubble screens and Edge runs Ryan day did not adjust his play calling style or game plan. Another thing I noticed was Jim Knowles did not anticipate JJ running. I know it's only 27 yards but he picked up 3 1st downs and 1 td. Jim Knowles didn't expect that. Or I believe he would have had some kind of spy on the qb. What u guys are saying has some valid points but I don't think you're giving enough credit to Michigan game planning and execution. You're saying what Ohio State didn't do. maybe they weren't allowed to do it because Michigan wasn't allowing them to do it. 3 points in the 2nd half isn't going to win ball games. Ohio state was out coach to the second half and I don't think you guys are giving in Michigan enough credit for that.

If Day would use the read option, there was some opportunities for Stroud that would have helped open the run game up even more. As it was the Buckeyes still ran for 6 yards a carry.
However, Day didn't want to risk Stroud getting hurt. It just isn't football when your QB never runs. But I guess if Stroud got hurt, then Day would feel bad for ruining the kid's NFL prospects considering his college career is almost over.

No doubt, Ryan Day has to turn the play calling over to someone else. He has to step back and relinquish those duties. Time to be a head coach in all respects. Using an orchestra as a analogy, you can't be a conductor and play an instrument at the same time.
Day can still have override authority 3 or 4 times a game, like Urban did, that should be just enough to let him do a bit of what he enjoys, calling plays. Backing away from the details should help him analyze the flow of the game better and act more quickly when a specific area needs to be addressed. If nothing else, it should resolve some of the clock issues.
He also has to involve himself more on the defensive side and make sure that the overall strategy is still appropriate given what is actually happening on the field. There was no need to continue gambling like we did, all game long, but especially after the first long TD run. That second TD run just made the final score worse.

Knowles is Don Brown 2.0. Brown had a high risk high reward defense at Michigan. Lots of tackles for loss but big plays when facing more talented teams like OSU or major players. Like OSU Michigan was in top overall categories statistically on the D but couldn't cut it when it mattered. Michigan is now in it's second year of the new system and improved statistically over last year despite losing key impact players. Most importantly they stopped trying to be OSU and formed their own identity. Plus the half time adjustments have been phenomenal. So the staff is showing they can think and analyze.

If Ryan Day has so much faith in Kevin Wilson let him call plays, Day's biggest problem is his own lack of head coach experience. You've hired good coaches utilize them. We all knew it will take a few years to get the defense right, we have improved but we're not there yet, let Kevin Wilson call plays, Ryan Day is in a learning process himself, he can see the plays Wilson calls and learn from it. Our secondary still aren't consistant in their game we need better corners or better development, our D-line needs improvement, as does our O-line, Chip, Dallan, and Xavier did run on them, we have talent but they still need to be developed, ttun doesn't have better players than us but they are developed better and coached better. I hope we go to the playoffs, I know we can execute better and when we do we are definitely a playoff caliber team, but only the players can find that intestinal fortitude to prevail, if we don't make the playoffs I would love to play USC in the rose bowl. Or even if they get the 1st down because he stretches, it's still a 65yds from the TD. Tackling was HORRIBLE in that game, period! The form needs to be changed/practiced or something. The demands of a HC at a program such as OSU are too great to wear both hats.
As a lifelong Buckeyes fan, living in Alabama, I’ve observed Saban fairly closely. He essentially sees himself as coach to the coaches AND the players.
By not calling plays, he’s free to coach coaches and players THROUGH the game and being the “thermostat”, not just the “thermometer” on the sideline.
Over the years, there have been times in games where he absolutely took control of his team and made championship winning moves (e.g., replacing championship QB Hurts for little known [at the time] Tua … an ABSOLUTELY “BALLSIE” move…in a championship game. He’s able to make such a call by having a great “feel” for his team in that game.
At a lesser program [by necessity or desire], maybe someone can succeed wearing both hats. But at this level, attempt at your peril.
Due to his lack of HCing experience, he’s just now figuring this out.

When the blitzing wasn't giving their QB enough pressure and he's throwing the ball to wide open receivers, he needed to adjust. Also when they are running off tackle on big running plays, you have to adjust. he didn't adjust. Also Days Offense has become unpredictable, especially when you don't; have a dual threat QB and are down 2 starting running backs. Also, being down a starting guard (Jones) was not good as well. Yeah, unfortunately our team has found it's self in a weird place right now but I agree I think long term it would be better if our team didn't get into the playoffs this year so we can all just focus on figuring out how to beat *ichigan and making any changes that need to be made...I really don't want to see our team gets smashed by Georgia either...Go Buckeyes!!!

We said that last year. And we match better against georgia then michigan at the moment. Michigan is built to beat us. And im not saying we beat uga but the chance is always there. We can beat anyone on any given day but our secondary is in dire straights. I believe in knolls but combs left our secondary in shambles. Knowles should have zoned up bc JJM is terrible at disecting zone coverage. Anyone can throw to butt naked recievers. I felt the front held up into the fourth minus 2 large runs when the game was decided. But it is what it is. We dont deserve the playoffs that i agree with.

    |Almost no one is going to like what I have to say but here goes anyway. I don’t know if the loss was worse or the reactions from so called Buckeye nation. Geez, grow up some and quit acting like children who had their candy taken away. Michigan has dealt with this for almost 20 years with more grace. What needs to change is simple. Getting it done a bit more complicated. Let me say first we have a GREAT coach and I certainly hope that doesn’t change. But we are paying a steep price for being able to see our team throw it all over the yard. It’s fun to watch when playing teams where they are very outmatched. But think back folks. When we had teams capable of honestly going to the final game and winning we were a run first team who had the ability to throw the ball. We are backassward. We have offensive lineman who don’t have enough composure to keep from being called for illegal procedure or holding when we are in the red zone when it’s most important. Our defense is going to be fine so don’t even think changes need to be made there. We need an offensive line - even if we have to go portal shopping - since all of the seemingly really good ones stay in the south. We don’t need the supposed greatest running back in the country if we fix that offensive line. Hayden is proof. We need to be able to pass only as an option to the offensive strategy. Tell me the last time you saw a national champion win without a running game. All of these receivers coming to town and quarterbacks possibly being pros some day doesn’t do a thing for us when the game gets down and dirty. Out best teams had Zeke and Dobbins running the heck out of the ball but the ONLY reason we won the natty was because JT got hurt and couldn’t play. We could run the ball and found a guy on the bench who could also throw it. But without Zeke, we DON’T WIN! It seems apparent that we aren’t going to get these offensive lineman here in Ohio and the elites stay in the south. We need to go portal shopping. Michigan’s left guard came in from the portal and made their line very solid. It ain’t easy but the recipe is there.

Last Saturday everything went the wrong way for OSU, while everything went right for TTUN. I still have faith in the Buckeyes.
