Great reaction again. Su-metal has a very powerful voice and lovely clear vocals, but you are right - there is some other very special quality about it that is very hard, maybe impossible, to describe.
It was the music that first dragged me in with BABYMETAL, the originality and pure entertainment had me look for more and explore more of their songs, but it was Su-metal's vocals that kept me coming back for more at every opportunity.
You are absolutely right about their choreo as well. They don't use dance moves from the "grab bag of dance" used by virtually every other act I've ever seen who have choreo. BABYMETAL's choreo isn't just giving you something to watch, it isn't there to fill an empty stage, it isn't there to titillate - no mincing round in leotards or skimpy knickers doing slut drops, grabbing their crotches.
As you said, BABYMETAL's choreo is bespoke for each song and is usually interpretive, relating to the lyrics or expressing the meaning or emotion of a song, but it is even more than that - for live performances their choreo involves the audience, it is designed to get the crowd to participate, to become part of the performance. At certain points in songs people will want to jump, to pump their fist, to shout and join in - the choreo lets them know its OK to jump, pump their fist, shout and whatever else at those points.
'Karate' was the lead single for their second album. It is about fighting adversity, when life knocks you down and everything seems too hard so you're hurt and crying, its about standing up and fighting on, helping each other through the hard times. They used karate to illustrate this as it is a Japanese martial art and reflects their culture - it also has no backward moves.
In the video the figures in white were the girls all along and they were conjuring up their own inner demons to fight against. They beat the first, the second knocked them down but they got up to eventually defeat themselves (did you notice the reflections of each of the girls in their own eyes when the masks shattered and it was revealed as them? Not many people spot that).
They did watch a lot of martial arts movies to get ideas for the choreo as they wanted it to look as authentic as possible. Moa catching the fly was a nod to Mr Miyagi in The Karate Kid. Mr Miyagi may have used chop sticks (and it may have taken him two or three films before he caught one), Moa caught her fly with her eyes closed - first time.
This song and video won 2 awards. "Best Metal Video in MTV Video Music Awards Japan 2016" and "Best Metal Song in 6th Annual Loudwire Music Awards".

I'll just cite from a reporter(an ex-metal fanatic) that watch their Sonisphere performance.
"Suzuka’s singing is clear, powerful and full of expression, a dote extremely appreciated by the crowd that never miss the chance to scream and applause any time SU hits the highest notes without hesitation"
Even the scariest looking metalhead struck by her voice 😂

The choreography and facial expressions is one of the main thing they focused when they started this having 11 and 12 yo, and the one in charge is called MikikoMetal, aka Mikiko Mizuno, she's a well known and reputable choreographer, she's behind another japanese famous and top notch group called Perfume, and also was involved in the 2016 Olympics ceremony as an artistic producer along with the 2020 Tokyo Olympics ceremony but that one sadly was removed due to the pandemic and sudden change of production.
Someone already told you to check out Download 2016, and they're totally right, you'll hear even more beautiful and unique SuMetal improvisations.
Karate meaning got full positive message, and I see you definitely got it from the get go. Nothing left to say.
Always a pleasure to see your reactions, see you next time.
    Kitsune up! 🦊🤘

There's a good reason this was the featured single from the second album.
They made a lot of friends among other groups by playing a bunch of metal festivals, and this song converted quite a few.
As is usually the case, the riffs are even heavier live.
Like a lot of BABYMETAL songs, this one has a positive message about facing life's challenges.

Nice reaction! When I first heard this song, I got goosebumps in her voice.
The contrast between the transparent singing voice and the heavy sound is really awesome.
I also recommend King Slayer in collaboration with Bring Me the Horizon
Please listen and continue their reaction.

Great Reaction: You share a common liking of Su-metal's voice. There is just something that draws you in and she is always spot on with vocal's especially live even with all the dancing around. Surrounding Su-Metal with the talent's of Moa and Yui, then add the kami band and then the whole production team with great songs that are so well done. There is so much to like that everyone can find something they find cool and interesting about Babymetal no matter what genre you like most.
Decided to hit you up with the lyrics as this song is about fighting your inner demons. At the end of the song where SU belts out a note and the masks explode revealing their own faces(fighting themselves or their own demons) You can see each of their own personal reflections in their eye. Cool touch that most miss. This video was so well edited I love it.

Babymetal MV are nice (if you're gonna checkout iine, the MV is a must), but for everything else, their live performance is the way to go.... Which is pretty much why most of their later videos are basically shots from their concerts.... To get a comparison, checkout Karate from Download 2016, both in sound/voice and also the crowd participation. In some of their Japan mega concerts you'd expect the Japanese crowd to go bonkers, but to see the look of surprise on my friends faces, when they witness a sea of non-Japanese metal heads, singing along with 3 little Japanese girls... That is priceless. 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤘🦊🤘

Your expression as Su's vocals started was priceless 😁 like others here Su's vocals brought me into BabyMetal and i was hooked.
Moa , Yui and the musicians behind BabyMetal are icing on the cake .
BabyMetal make you smile , bring a tear to your eyes emotions sometimes you can not explain . They give you goosebumps a lot
and we have watched them grow up and have pride in what they have achieved. I have never felt such an attachment and bound with any band as i do with BabyMetal.
As mentioned in comments check out Karate at Download in 2016 UK on mainstage. A festival the organiser only the year before said BabyMetal would never perform there !
Try Road of Resistance live in Japan
To get all them emotions i described and as Su once said in interview about BabyMetals music " dont think feel " ❤❤❤🤘🦊🤘

Don't worry I'm a sucker for Su's singing voice and I don't even know why. I believe it's a mix of all the features: register, timbre, power... but most important she has the ability of conveying the emotions like no other. I believe that it is what makes she so good.
    Until next time!

the girls have grown into beautiful young woman! you should check out some of their new stuff from their latest album "metal galaxy". the album is very experimental and they do different types of metal, they also use different cultures. "oh majanai" and "shanti shanti" are great examples. if you look up babymetal metal galaxy d1 both songs are performed. if you would like to react to it or watch it by yourself the time stamps are in the comments!

I think you put it correctly in your first reaction: "It shouldn't work but it does". Such an unique band. The songs that really got me when I started listening to them was "The One" (it's a Ballad dedicated to their fans) and ofc "Road of Resistance" (song written by Dragonforce if I remember correctly). I'd be happy to come back for more. Have a nice day!

About Road of Resistance: the song was written By BabyMetal team, DragonForce's Herman Li and Sam Totman did the guitar arrangments and played the guitars on the studio version :)

A great reaction, I think most here would agree that Su has an amazing voice. So much power and range yet laced with delicacy as well.
If you are interested, there is a very good 'guide' to Babymetal from a creator named CrypticMisery. The guide is made to help give reactors information and a much better understanding of the band and as such there is no need to mask the video. Many people react to this guide, and it seems to pull good numbers. There are two versions, a short one and the longer one (around 40 minutes). If you watch it, I suggest the longer version (and I think most fans would as well) as it provides sooo much more depth on the key points. Ask your viewers which one they would prefer. Anyway, just a thought.
Thanks for creating such good content.

I have been a fan for a few years now, and I still don't quite understand why they have that much of an effect on me. The music and everything around it ooze positivity that brightens every day. They also make me appreciate new things. I have never like choreographed dancing (and to be honest, I think I still don't), but for some reason it works with BABYMETAL. As you said, the choreographies are more tied into the songs than with most other bands. I feel like those usually just grab a handful of random moves from the usual grab-bag and string them together. It's incredibly boring.
It's a similar thing with the genres that BABYMETAL mix into their songs. Some of them I would never listen to, but as soon as they touch them, it turns into gold. It's a real phenomenon.

Excellent! Your point about BABYMETAL'S choreography was spot on. Also, unlike many other J-pop/K-Pop Idol groups, BABYMETAL used no suggestive or sexual imagery, lyrics, or choreography in their music or performances. This was intentional, mostly because they started in BABYMETAL when they were just 10 & 12 years old. Su-metal & Moametal are now 24 & 22 (Yuimetal is also 22, but she left the group in 2018).

This, along with Megitsune, is one of Babymetal's better videos. Live is usually best, but Amuse has the skill and production talent to create interesting videos.
Karate is about fighting against adversaries both real and imagined, and some that you create yourself, and never giving up. The big reveal at the end is that the white robed, skull faced figures are the girls themselves. It's one of BM's "empowerment" songs that emphasizes inner strength and the value of friendship...particularly in the dance. It's a good example of how well BM can manipulate your emotions. It starts off heavy and confrontational and by the end the dance and the tone of the music has become more intimate and transcendent and I certainly get a bit misty eyed. BM can communicate with any audience through the dance and music which is why they have such a large following outside of Japan.

Thanks for this reaction, it's even better live.
Even if you can't put everything it into words you make some good points, the choreography of Babymetal is directly linked to the lyrics, they express the lyrics. Like interpretive dance or sign language.
The singing parts at the end of the song was during the creation of the song in the studio/writing referred as 'the Mariah [Carey]'.
I think part of why we enjoy, especially leadsinger Su-metal's voice, is because she is very good at putting emotion in her singing. And that's what we pick up on.
Pretty much all the Babymetal songs, have a positive/uplifting/inspiring theme/feel to it.I do believe this is part of Babymetal's J-Pop/idol background.
I would recommend the live video: BABYMETAL // BxMxC (TH-cam channel: KuroKiitsuneSama)

The singer did start doing Anime at age 7. She has that Anime "call to action" feel to it and she conveys emotion very well. This song is kind of mournful with some hope mixed in. Their choreography does help to tell the story of the song.

I have heard Su's voice described as having little vibrato. It is amazingly strong and clear. By the way, I am so glad to find someone who appreciates the group as much as I do. The band began when they were very young, through a management group in Japan. (That part always confused me.) Su-metal's stage presence is noticeable from a very young age and has only grown. The reaction you did from their Sonisphere performance there is an example of her Evil Eye. It is quite controlling in other live performances where she absolutely has the crowd in the palm of her hand. I am so glad you popped up as a random video, as I have enjoyed your reactions and am happy to meet another big fan! As you mentioned, it seems to be a love or hate reaction to them, and too many people I know lean towards the hate side.
