Oooh who wouldn’t want a bookshelf tour. I need to do one of those, I’ve still not since the library was done. I imagine my mother wishes I had your Ancient Greek shelves, and I get my little sister wishes she had them for herself. That dedicated copy from your dad is lovely. You should do a readalong of the new Odyssey translation.

This is another reminder of why I love your channel, Jean. ha ha. I will avoid commenting on too many of your books since I could be here all day. Two of your books were written by a university teacher of mine. He was a pretty uninspired teacher so I hope he's as a better writer. It breaks my heart that you have no chill for "The Iliad." After the plays of Sophocles and Shakespeare it's my all-time favorite book (especially in the Richmond Lattimore translation!). A lot of wonderful, wonderful books, Jeans. - And is that how you pronounce De Ste. Croix? I was never sure.
This video is single-handedly going to bankrupt me, I want to check out so many of the nonfiction books you mentioned! I absolutely adore classic literature and it's so nice to get some slightly more obscure recommendations. Thank you Jean xx

As someone who knows very little about ancient history and mythology (I have only read the Iliad and done a first year Ancient Roman history subject that was a few years ago now) it's always nice to hear you talk about it 😊 loved the fact about Socrates, never knew!

Not latin no, but I’ve done a few years of Ancient Greek now so I have a reasonable understanding, still need a dictionary to hand for a proper translation of a big text. Don’t have much cause to write in it aha.

I loved this chatty book shelves tour, Jean :) I'm always so inspired by your drive when it comes to your degree and everything you do outside of it. Of course we don't get to see everyhting that is going on in your life (as we shouldn't), but I just wanted to let you know that I really appreciate all the work you put into your videos and then you having to do your Phd and a normal job outside of that as well. Take care of yourself, and I also cannot wait for your podcast to be released! ^^ xxx

I finally finished The Odyssey last month :D I had a beautiful Oxford University Press edition in verse, it was marvelous :D

I love your bookshelf. So many bookshelf tours involve young adult novels. I don't mind that, but I think young adult novels are over represented in the book tube world. It's refreshing to see more substantial books being read by the community.

Hard to say! Although Daphnis and Chloe is my favourite book we don't have any other works by Longus, if he wrote any, so I feel like I can't call him my favourite writer - same goes for Apollonius of Rhodes who wrote the Argonautica. Hi Jean! First of all love the video as always and I now have plenty of books in my amazon cart thanks to it- but I actually had a question spurred on by Socrate's Defense. In college (or university- I'm American) I had to take rhetoric and we had to study Plato and to be honest the entire time I sort of wondered a question that I feel stupid for wondering, so please forgive me if it really is stupid. But! It just occurred to be that you'd be the perfect person to ask. Is Socrates a real person, or was he made up by Plato as a teaching method for his own students? I know Socrates was cited by several other people (Xenophon and Aristophanes) but I still sort of feel like he might be made up. What are your thoughts? Is that completely off the wall? Thank you so much!!

Not a stupid question, an interesting theory ^_^ and it's always good to consider everything. I'm pretty sure he was real though. Aristophanes mentioned him in his plays, mocking him, before Plato ever did, and whilst Socrates was still alive. And his execution was pretty famous in classical Athens.
Whether he said all the stuff Plato puts in his mouth is a whole other kettle of fish though aha.
