In Cars 2, when they go to Japan, Weezer's cover of You Might Think by the band The Cars, plays. There are so many coincidences in this one sentence alone.
@@mypointissharpandpointytake this with a grain of salt but I think somebody held up a religious symbol that looks similar to a sw@sticka and river said h*il hitler
4:45 some artists used to do japan-exclusive versions of their albums with an additional track, since cds were a little more expensive there! I bought the japanese version of muse's "origin of symmetry" for a cd collector friend a while back
Bit weird to not mention Jennifer Chiba in this, who was Rivers' on-again off-again girlfriend in the early/mid 90s and who also definitely did not kill Elliott Smith
also the line "your tongue is twisted and your eyes are slits" are a reference to Rivers' Japanese friend (the entire song of buddy holly is a reference to his friends being dicks to his Japanese friend)
The intro in Falling for you is from a Korean radio station interference that was picked up by a guitar amp, so sadly it's not Japanese. I had the same reaction when I first heard the track, I had to look it up
@@Jydmd The Korean sample fits perfectly fine in the song. I think Weezer, or more specifically Rivers cares more about Asian culture in general rather than JUST Japanese culture.
i feel like this happens with a lot of bands for some reason or another. king crimson and duran duran (this is just something my dad told me that he remembered, and its hard to google because of the band japan, so i might be wrong) come to mind but im sure theres more.
Yeah this more Rivers Cuomo… love the guy but yeah Pinkerton is one weird and in my opinion wonderful at some times album… Across the sea is pretty gross though…. 😂
I like Across the Sea. The lyrics spell out a thought pattern that's really common with nerdy teens with no relationship experience in North America - basically, a combination of loneliness and Peter Pan syndrome, which leads to idealizing this mystical girl from a culture you know nothing about. It's like a microcosm of the high school nerd mindset. In Rivers' case, not only was he idealizing this unknown girl from a faraway culture, but the song explains how despite the incredible amount of support and "love" he was getting from fans, he still felt lonely and empty inside. "So, you send me your love from all around the world, as if I could live on words and dreams and a million screams. Oh, how I need a hand in mine to feel." Yes, he laid it on pretty thick with the whole "I wonder how you touch yourself" parts, but that sheer amount of candidness displayed by this song is something you never see in popular music. I love it
it's kind of meant to be gross, these feelings/thoughts *are* gross and weird and the song doesn't shy away from it in fact the topic of the song is exactly that, it isnt about how wanting a relationship with a much younger fan is totally cool and acceptable but still if this topic for a song is where you draw the line personally i totally get it. like, im not saying it isnt creepy
i just listened to some weezer and kept find comments on river and pinkerton. How does El Scorcho exist with all that lyric and history reason. Its in 4k not even maybe its just 100%

@@SuperTiaanBro There's a few references about Japan/japanese girls on Pinkerton, that would have been fitting.

Rivers has collaborated with Asian Kung-Fu Generation too
That's true! Asian Kung-Fu Generation also recently released a cover of I Just Threw Out The Love of My Dreams 😬
AKFG did a cover of Only in Dreams with Matt Sharp
You missed mentioning the sumo wrestlers in their music video.
Weezer? more like "Weeber"
There is also a great Video where Weezer is visiting Japan and visting stores and stuff.
What about the sumo wrestlers in hash pipe video ?

I never knew WEEZER made anime sounding songs
To be fair, Japanese Weezer is just AKFG lmao
in falling for you its a korean ad that was on the radio that rivers guitar picked up, tgey thpught it was cool and kept it in
Queen had a similar obsession with Japan, but that’s probably because the Japanese loved Queen.
Algorithm sent me - I have always thought about this stuff, appreciate your perspective! Keep it up!!!

gotta level that audio, man. your voice is way to low and the few song clips you play are way too high
First time using the lav mic in a while, definitely will keep that in mind next time!
good video but your levels are all off mate!
