    This Vacuum System allows to use Bell Jars of several sizes. I use kitchen glass bowls as bell jars. The base is an aluminum plate of 10 mm thick. The gasket is rubber from an inner tube from a car tyre. The connectors and valves are GAS 1/4 thread. The four (4) spark plugs give electrical isolation and air tightness. Each one is connected to a banana conector (banana socket). This provide an easy way to use the chamber with detectors, sensors (i.e. electric conductivity pressure sensors); electrodes for plasma arcs, cathodic rays, X-rays, triodes (thermionic emission), etc.)

    I did that. I put the bowl on a solid aluminum surface. But I need a gasket (rubber) to seal it. I also need valves in order to connect the vacuum pump, release pressure, connect a vacuum-meter or vacuum gauge and several wall bushings in order to put electricity into and/or electricity out (measuring electrical values). This is a Laboratory Vacuum Chamber, so it needs a wide functionality.

    Yes, I see this!. Thank you for your comment and reflections.
    It is true that is very difficult to solder, perhaps kind of brazing or welding would be necessary. I only tried once to connect the electrodes, but not soldering but with plastic caps or tops (I made them with polypropilene bar with a lathe), so the caps are threaded to fit the spark plug thread and make connection by pressure, since the caps have a cable inside at the end of the threaded hole.
    Tell me what you think of this...

    Have you considered making a second hemisphere on the bottom and instead of the tapped and ported aluminum plate you tap and port a ring between the two glass bowls?

    You could get a better seal with the bell jar by using some vacuum grease at the glass-rubber and rubber-plate interfaces. It might get you to lower pressures.

    Very nice! I am tasked with the same project for my lab, and this vid was extremely helpful. I have a polyethylene base plate, though, but I think it will still work. If not, I will try an aluminum base plate like yours. Thanks!

    You gave me some things to consider and think about. You left out one important part for any vacuum chamber; Holding a vacuum. What is the leak rate for this design?

    • @tinkerbit
      @tinkerbit  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      I didn't test that. All the experiments I have made are short term, but you are right it would be good to check the leak rate. I understand it depends much on the gasket,,,

    • @JonHeckendorf
      @JonHeckendorf 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      I just mentioned this so if you need to test for example an altimeter and the needle moves to a neutral point on its scale and not where it should be how can you be sure if the instrument has a leak or the vacuum system has the leak or both. Without spending a lot of money all vacuum systems will most likely have some leakage. The rate of loss of vacuum then becomes important. Something to think about. Gotta go to have it out with an atheist. They always amuse me.

    The spark plug center electrode isn't a perfect conductor because of the nickel alloy sheath so you can't solder to it and there is a significant voltage drop. Doesn't work so if measuring voltage through it. Maybe there is a way to strip the nickel to get to the copper center electrode. thoughts? hope you see this

  • @putinscat1208
    @putinscat1208 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    Are the spark plugs insulated from the base? I assume you would use just one connector in the plug, and so it wouldn't spark but just produce a voltage difference? I need something similar to make a gas discharge tube, and I really don't want to spend a year forming pyrex tubes over tungsten, etc.

    • @tinkerbit
      @tinkerbit  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Putins Cat The spark plugs have two poles, let's call them mass and center. Only center is insultaded from the base so you need two spark plugs to introduce (or get from a sensor) current in the chamber. The problem with this design is that when you reach the discharge voltage from the center of one plug to the mass it releases a spark, really I think it is two sparks: from center of spark plug 1 to mass----mass to center of spark plug 2. It is a separation distance matter. Good luck.

    • @putinscat1208
      @putinscat1208 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      mopatin Thanks. I have found that I can buy feed thru connectors also that are similar to sparkplugs. Look up Magnetron Sputtering for what I am trying for.

    Ok, well I think the NGK CR7E has an internal resistor to reduce EM noise, but the BOSCH does not. I'm going to get some of those to see if that will work. The Bosch also has a copper core electrode so it should solder as well.

    facing towards the positive pole on the gyroscope.
    And by somehow you make the gyroscope spin,

    Yes, I see. I've overcome the connection problem but the issue is that the nickel tip is resistive. Measuring from one end to the other, I get about 1.66 Ohms. I'm going to try to get the nickel out and get down to the copper inner electrode somehow

    A vacuum has ZERO pressure yet you still show pressure. This is not like the vacuum of outer space. In fact, this is a really LOW vacuum demonstration that still has thousands of times more pressure than outer space.

    • @korlic9
      @korlic9 9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      +Greg Swamp M8 what are you on about. A vacuum chamber made at home is not going to form a complete vacuum. Its gona give you reduced atmospheric pressure for experiments and chemical reactions. (has nothing to do with the vacuum of space)
