I bought a second hand gtx 1080 like 2 years ago , and it was crashing games for me when it was reaching high core clocks , the fact that gpuZ keep saying the gpu itself is running at 65c on full load was a relief but it was crashing still . I had to do a full clean up which ended up being one of the vram chip was overheating to about 90c or so because it was cligged with dust . Cleaning it up aolved my problem . Tip: if u planning to clean up a gpu make sure to make a full clean rhather than just applying a new paste . Hope this helps , your Gpu will thank you ❤
@@ShinPso2 yep, I burned out a 1080 ftw2 card. No crashes after applying Liquid Metal to the die. But a month or so later, random crash on load. Turns out I forgot a single pad on a memory chip.
74° is still very cool, and the old thermal paste still looked perfectly fine. But its always good practice to replace it, especially on an 8 year old GPU.
Gonna be honest I didn’t realize the gpu had a chip that require thermal paste! I feel like we’re all taught to paste up the CPU but never thought about the GPU 😮 am I the only one??
The GPU is basically a pc by itself, everything that is on your moba is also on your GPU,a kind of processor and the ram are both in the GPU, it's just missing storage
I bought a used MSI GTX 1080. 1st thing I did was ran Unigine Heaven and temps was hitting 91°C. So basically that paste was dry and crispy. Re-pasted and was hitting around 65-70°C under load. This is very important content good sir
"or do long term damage" Remember that sensors don't tell you the worst temp. If the paste totally dries up parts of the gpu can lose contact and it can fry itself under peak load
Emery board the thin spots of the chip where the thermal paste is thinnest showing high side level . Just barely touch it with the paper nail file , yes I do to a lot of chips depends on age use and some other look fors
Hey man , i bought a gpu and the thermal paste there is so old and so hard dried , i tried everything to remove it but its so hard , what should i use to get that thing removed
soak it in rubbing alcohol, like with a damp cottonball or paper tower or something, and let it just sit on it for awhile to try to penetrate it. After that, use some kind of hard flat and thin object to essentially scrape it off. You can also try to apply a heat gun to it to try to soften it before scraping.
@@nerdonabudget thanks man , i used a warm hair dryer to try and soften it , but nothing happened ,I tried the alcohol way , 14 year old thermal paste , even though I got most of it out , i couldnt get the last bit of it , I put new thermal paste on top , the temps are not bad it goes from 60 to 80° but i think ill change the fans aswell maybe that helps.

I got an evga gtx 1080 and it holds about 70 degrees but I believe that's normal because the fans don't kick on before 60 degrees.

gtx 1660oc, bought it brand new 5 years ago and its 38° and while playing games(ex. god of war, cod) goes up to 55°

When i buy used gpu i change thermal pads and paste at once
Using a 970 highest temp I’ve ever gotten it to is 74c and that was running apex legends on max settings 80fps

I'd rather go with old thermal paste than fresh paste and reused thermal pads. I don't know how to get new pads.
ive got this old dell m2800 its never been repaisted since 2014 temps were hitting 96 and after repaisting it never went past 76c

mine is about 2 weeks old because i bought a brand new 4070
My 980M has 9 year old thermal paste so I put some 18 year old thermal paste and it's running worse sooo.
I’ve also had my one EVGA card start to run hotter faster, might be the different paste I’m using. But might also be an EVGA thing?
Always a great thing to do. Pull apart those GPU people haha. I got 20 degrees cooler hot spots on 1660 super and 15 degrees cooler on 2060
