    Love my Hatteras 45. It was built before any of this fancy tech but is a solid beast!

      So how much. The 42 boston whaler is 1.2. Then they want 35 per foot ,not counting my 500 pound girlfriend's pump out on a daily bases from my poor comode maybe I should invest in a oil tanker. By the time we cross the Atlantic empty. The tanker will be full from my girlfriends waste deposits.

      Hatteras 45 was the first boat I had ever been on. Raised in the mountains. At 14 my dad took me on a trip with his friend that owned a hatteras 45. Was the best week of my life. Loved that vessel.

    I worked at the same plant back in the late 80's working on line #5 building 65' Convertibles. I worked in station #5 which was finish carpentry and headliners. Business was booming then. Worked 12 hour days M-F and 8 on Saturday. Fat wage, time and a half overtime, full medical and dental and regular wage increases.

      That's hard work Bill, and happy to hear how they treat their artisans! Thanks for sharing.

      @@BoatTEST They REALLY had some Master carpenters there. Some worked up on the middle deck making cubicles to be lowered into motor yachts. Almost all boats had some cubicles lowered in. I think I remember hearing that the 65 was still mostly stick built. We had a Master carpenter on our boat at our station. Roger Montgomery. He fitted most of the solid cabin doors which changed slightly on every boat. The doors of either solid teak or mahogny costing thousands of dollars each were putty in his hands.

    Really interesting - I appreciate that you explained the technical details and processes as its this that really demonstrates why Hatteras boats are so expensive (rather than just saying something like "they are expensive because they are the best") Great video - very informative.

    Amazing! -- QUESTION -- I don't understand what I am seeing @ 3:04.. How many layers of fiberglass are on the hull? It looked like they placed one layer on top of the foam? Is that correct?

    I Captained a 65 hatteras convertible called the maggie back in the early 90's and that vessel was a beast in heavy sea. 26 knots threw huge seas and never missed a beat out ran all those so called fast sport fish. i fished out of singer Island in heavy weather and all the local boys stayed home.

    Spent three years with Bertram Yacht, back in the late eighties building fixtures. Those who crafted the new models were the cream of the crop. Two Brits. The bottom dropout, in 89, ended up with the airlines. Hatteras were and are still top of the line

    Looks so nice! -- QUESTION -- I was watching Jarrett Bay boat build and it seems like they make the hull from plywood and then cover the wood with fiberglass?? Not sure what I was watching with them. Is that possible? Do they actually make a wood boat with fiberglass on top of it? Would this not get wood rot over time?

    I own a 1988 Hatteras 38C, which so happen has a square keyway in the drive shaft. 3 months ago I lost 1 of my propeller to the 100 feet deep sea bed. I managed to manoeuvre back to my marina. 1 of the drive shaft snap off exactly as in 4:57 of the video. Remaining shaft is cracked exactly as in 4:43.
    If Hatteras has knew it since 2018 why would they not tell the owners earlier?

    • @Mr.Highway

      Every shaft built is made with square keys..
      It is the most common in the tooling industry for carrying load. More than likely the sacrificial material was to hard to strip/break..

    The resin infusion fiberglass is cheaper than hand laid fiberglass and results in a better product with fewer air bubbles in the fiberglass, and lighter, since there is only as much resin used as needed.

    Once you paint a boat you take away from it's value. Hit the doc a little to hard and you will see how fancy that paint job is. Gel-coat is more than 20 times tougher than paint and will also outlast paint 20 to 1. If you need to clean and re-straighten your molds up than do it. You still have to Gel-coat the mold before you start the lamination schedule why not pop your hull out of the mold and have a 50 year finish on it that's shinny and ready to go. Paint will not stick good to Gel-coat never did and never will.

  • @AMERICANPATRIOT1945
    @AMERICANPATRIOT1945 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Hatteras is expensive because they are built better than most others. As the saying goes, you get what you pay for. Would you want to be out on the ocean in a large but poorly built yacht or a smaller but well built Hatteras that you know will bring you back safely? The sea is way too unforgiving to take one's chances in a bargain big boat.

      @jcjannarone 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Nordhavn has quality issues. They made many changes over the years. And you have to wonder why they only built one 120 and that owners is spending a lifetime making sure everyone knows it was a poorly built boat compared to others. They have a niche, marketing. Not arguing that they aren’t amazing boats, but so was Hatteras. Compared to so many others running that race.

    Too bad the workers will never know the nautical thrill of Hatteras ownership and must vicariously experience the sensation on the company yacht or perhaps at the invitation of a proud Hatteras owner at the local yacht club. Their only hope is a MegaMillions payoff, which we all secretly yearn for, or an inheritance from their rich Uncle Jim, who was not a Hatteras skipper himself, but whose beneficence could make that dream come true
