How to WATCH NETFLIX on Peloton + More! (step-by-step guide)

- In this video, we show you how to install Netflix on your Peloton, and much, much more. In this example, I'm using the Peloton Bike+ but the same basic outline should work for the original Peloton Bike and the Peloton Tread.
Disclaimer: this is not endorsed by Peloton. Your mileage may vary. Although it's easy to reset your Peloton back to defaults or uninstall apps, proceed at your own risk.

In addition to Netflix, I show you how to install Google Chrome, iFit, and even enable split screen mode so that you can take workouts and browse the web or Twitter. And everything can easily be reverted to stock settings. In this tutorial, I use a Mac computer, but it's also possible with Windows. If you'd like a full Windows tutorial, let me know in the comments.

Keep in mind that the Bike+ has a USB-C port, which will let you use a USB-C to USB-C cable. Older Peloton Bike's have a micro USB port, so you'll need the proper cable to connect to your computer.

Thanks for this. So dumb of peloton to not realize that allowing people to use the screen for viewing other content is a huge selling point.
For real. they already pretty much force people into a subscription to their membership/app, might as well let people use netflix or hulu. It won't take away from their app, people will still use it.

For the amount the bike costs this should come standard with peloton! They should advertise the split screen.

Yup same here, I also opened up the app, selected allow system settings modifications hoping that would over-ride the issue but no luck. Peloton recently had a Software update I wonder if that broke this feature from happening.

Just as a heads up, it looks like there's another barrier that must've gotten added with a recent update. When attempting to enable USB debugging I was getting an error message saying "Because an app is obscuring a permission request, Settings can't verify your response". In order to fix this, just go into Settings->Device Settings->Apps, click the gear in the top-right, then go to Special Access->Draw over other apps, then unselect both apps that are checked. You can then reconnect your USB cable, and enable USB debugging. Make sure you check 'remember this device', and then immediately check both of the apps again. After that you can then install any apps you want :)
Just knocked the dust off the old peloton and fired her up and nova launcher was gone. Was stuck with your error for about 2 hours. I should've checked the comments. Lol

You can also just reboot / power off the screen. When you power back up, you will get the box again while it's booting and will allow you to check the debugging without this issue.

Feb 2024 update - managed to do this! Nova launcher, Prime video, Netflix, Google chrome installed and running. Nova Launcher set a s default launcher, and no issues getting back onto Peloton. Disney+ not working for some reason may try again in the future.
You NEED an active subscription to install the APK successfully. Tried it without an active subscription and it did not go through. Bit the bullet and tried again. Went through!

Great job! I've wasted quite a few hours trying to figure out how to get this to work and you explained it well. Did it on a Windows laptop, just drop the ./ before adb in the command line and you're good to go. My only issue was with trying to use Powershell to do this instead of running a command prompt...Poweshell worked fine connecting to the Peloton but was unable to install the APKs.
do you still have peloton subscription? APK install is allowed only when subscription is active.
I did have to reactivate my membership to have the APK even attempt to install. However, I am now getting the error that the install failed due to "requires newer sdk version #26".
Any ideas?

Essentially, don't take latest Nova apk. Look for Android 7 was 6.2.19 from May 2021.

Happy to help. BTW, it's basically the same on Windows. Just use adb devices (with no ./) beforehand. Make sure you're in the platform-tools directory and you should be good.

@@ConnectTheWatts I'm not sure if the apk files or platform tools have updated since you posted, but I'm having issues on a PC installation for my original Peloton bike (Android 7.0). My first attempt, I downloaded the most up to date version platform tools, but ran into "Requires newer sdk version #26 (current version is #24)". When I ran "adb devices" it listed my peloton as "unauthorized". I was able to find an older platform tools file, which then listed my peloton as "device" when I ran "adb devices", but it still wont launch Nova. this is perfect! i made an arm that attaches my iPad to the back of the pelaton screen. I don't have a subscription so I was using my iPad contents for entertainment while I ride, then use the "just ride" to monitor my ride. I will try this for sure!
Apparently you need a valid subscription to do this .. we’re you able to do it without a subscription ?

(10:18) In the case of Chrome, that means you'd not be able to sync your settings and other content over, so you'd still be able to go to website and such if you remember what domain it's at or if you just do Web searches.
If you can't dismiss such Google Play Services errors, then you may be able to just tap outside those dialogue windows to dismiss them. I've installed apps on some other Android devices that don't have them, like embedded devices normally locked in to specific apps, and have usually been able to do so.
For Firefox, which is what I prefer to use instead, I believe that has Google Play Services dependencies, though I haven't tried it myself with the Play Store version, nor with the version downloaded directly from Mozilla's own archice, but I instead use a modified version from F-Droid which removes a number of Mozilla annoyances and Google dependencies. Notifications don't seem to work on that version, but that's not much of a problem for me.
For Chrome, you might be able to find a Ungoogled Chromium build that should not depend on Google Play Services, however, I haven't tried that myself.
(15:37) I believe that's an Android limitation, in which it only allows 1 A/V session at a time without apps hacking around that limitation.

Wow!! This is really cool stuff. Are these steps applicable to Echelon Bikes as well? I think both Peloton and Echelon are using Android OS under the hood. Do you think these additional changes can be overwritten with a new software update from Bikes manufacturers or these will stay in their own namespace? You should do meditation content as well ha ha your voice is so soothing I have the bike plus I thought about doing this but I’m probably the only person in the world that does not have a computer so yeah there’s that. But I did put Spotify on the bike plus. I’m so happy I bought it I love the bike plus. I am blind so I use the accessibility feature on the bike I’m so happy that peloton actually thought about blind people and made this option available.
I would love to see a windows version. I do not know what to do after I download SDK software. This would be great to watch as I am riding.

Hi there I was able to download the custom navigation bar app but when I go to start the compatibility test, the arrow does not appear at the bottom and I get this message. "device not compatible with this app." Is there a way to still enable split screen or is my peloton bike+ simply isn't compatible with the app at this time? it looks like I am running android 10.

Do that have an APK to cast from a device? I’m saving $50 a month and using the fitness+ from Apple. It would be awesome if I could cast it on the peloton screen.
If I’m on Netflix does the tap Apple Watch feature still work for analytics? Or do I have to manually set up my Apple Watch to exercise mode prior to cycling? Thanks for the video this is gonna be a game changer for me.
For the tread+ the micro usb is in the back on the top where it says peloton. Remove the peloton cap by pulling up and it will expose the micro usb port. There is a USB 3.0 port on the bottom of the tablet next to a headphone jack but that port DOES NOT WORK. Use the micro usb. I also had to utilize the comment by Eric Kevin to fix the “Because an app is obscuring a permission request”. Had to do those step before debugging would be allowed with my device. Then followed all the terminal commands and successfully uploaded all APKs. I also used the Nova Launcher 6.2.19 because my android is 7.0 version. Hope this helps.

@@julianeescobar6014 for the Peloton TREAD +. There are two bolts when you pop off the Peloton top piece. On the left side there is a micro USB port.

It should also be noted that you need an active subscription to peloton for the adb install to work. I was connected to the bike on adb and the installer kept hanging even after a factory reset until I reinstated my subscription then without even reconnecting my computer or restarting the bike, the adb install worked.

Nice trick. I was looking for something like this. question though - can i start my workout on the peloton and then go and watch netflix? will the workout continue in the background? or will it pause (as in the split screen example). trying to to find the best of both worlds :)
Awesome - Does Peloton sometimes run firmware, etc. updates that cause this setup to reset? If so, should I try to block those updates until required by the application, etc? I have a TV in the same room and have not even received my Pelotons yet, but thinking maybe I should go ahead and make these changes while they are available as things change, software options get renamed, packages get blocked, etc. Having some freedom to run watch youtube, youtube TV, and hopefully plex client is just a nice option

im stuck on "Performing Streamed Install". I do not get the success message at all. I am wonderin if a new bike is set up not to allow that. Well, Im returning it if that's the case.
You can watch movies while working out but you cannot maximise the movie/video player while you're working out (that will pause the workout), so your movie must be basically a PiP to the main peloton workout for the two to work seamlessly while keeping all stats, metrics and original movie playing. I've tested with Just Ride and not a prerecorded / live class or anything...
Yeah, that's primarily why I was interested in this for the Tread, since just run is a giant black screen, such a waste of screen realestate, not to mention boredom. I don't have a TV nearby in my gym. So, how do you have to do it exactly?

Need to have these apps on your Apple Watch:
1. Apple Workout app
2. Peloton watch app
Steps:
1. Setup the split screen with the Peloton and your movie app/browser screen as per the original video.
2. Once that’s done, pair your watch using the workout app and start your workout
1. When you start your movie, it may pause the workout and vice versa. If it does, use the peloton watch app to “resume” your workout.

Currently having an issue with Netflix...all my other apps work but netflix closes immediately upon opening unless i reboot peloton and go directly into netflix...then itll play but once i keave and try ro go back in it force closes again. Any suggestions ?
Update: the workaround for now is instead of rebooting and going straight into Netflix you can force close the peloton app then open the Netflix ... Saves time rebooting.

Thanks for great video but you didn't mention the biggest pre-requisite, i.e. apk install only works if you have active peloton subscription.
Another things is you didn't mention that charging USB cable doesn't work. You need data USB cable. Apart from that great job!

@@hismajesty3366 , yes, that will work. but eventually most of the apps will need upgrade in order to work so you will need subscription every time you want to update app (too common unfortunately).

@@hismajesty3366 As far as I know, there isn't an easy way. After trying very hard, I decided it's not worth the effort. 39.99 sounds steep but you spent 2.5k on bike so it's not much really in relative term. Just get subscription for 1 month, install everything you want and cancel it. Then you will need it again if apps need to be updated.
Also, it's totally worth getting membership if you really use it. I wish they had cheaper package just for bike ride. I don't need exercise and meditation.

Has anyone had trouble after Peloton upgraded to Android 10? The P and back buttons are now no longer working for me once in Nova Launcher, and the Android apps are a bit clunkier than before
Hey everyone, I have a Tread+ and I got the following to work for me:
1) Netflix APK added
2) Chrome browser added
3) Disney+ APK added
4) Custom navigation bar added
I could not get the Hulu APK to work at all. Hulu is not something mentioned in the video, but I wanted to try and get it to work. I did manage to install a Hulu APK, but when I went to launch it, the app said I needed to make an update from the Google Play store. I tried to update the app from the APK Pure launcher but I could never successfully finished updating the Hulu app despite trying to allow installs from unknown publishers in the security permissions. However, I WAS able to get Hulu to work by running it as desktop mode in the Chrome browser. I did this by simply clicking on the 3 dots on the upper-right of the Chrome browser and selecting '"desktop site."
I did everything mostly as described in the video. There were several comments that were extremely important that need to be noted:
1) This will NOT work unless your Tread+ is active on a subscription (at least it did not for me). Once I re-enabled the subscription, it began working.
2) You absolutely MUST follow Eric Kenvin's comments about special access (Settings->Device Settings->Apps, click the gear in the top-right, then go to Special Access->Draw over other apps, then unselect both apps that are checked.)
3) On the Tread+, the USB port underneath the screen DOES NOT WORK. You must use the micro-USB cable on the back. This information was buried in a comment, but I am noting it here for those with at Tread+. Access to the USB micro requires you to remove the plastic portion behind the screen that says "Peloton'" (be gentle so as to not to break the plastic clips).
I mostly followed the entire walkthrough and got all the apps loaded, but then when I went into Peloton "Just Run" the Tread+ was no longer giving me the option of getting back to the Nova Launcher. The Peloton forced me to unselect the "special access" in order to use it. What I suspect then happen is that the firmware on the Peloton launcher disabled the Nova launcher.
Connect The Watt's video description is superb. However, the the 10-button trick as described by Wolfbaine on XDA (there is a link for this step-by-step tutorial in the video comments) was VERY helpful! I had to completely factory reset the tread and reload the APKs because I had the functionality but then lost it. I think if I would have used Wolfbaine's comments, I could have kept both the Nova Launcher and the Peloton Launcher working.
When I did successful get the Nova launcher up and running, I set it to the default "always launch'". That is the only comment that I want to add in case it is helpful for someone else. Pamela Fagan Hutchins hits on a lot of the important points that I also needed to make this work, and without which would not allow this to work.
The other really important tip was on Wolfbaine's post by user "xda_uef". Only once I enabled the resizing option could I run split-screen "Just run" and Netflix app. Here is a link to that article:
