A big thing I forgot to mention, but one of the main reasons healing is so frowned upon is duels is because the host has double the amount of flasks so if you're summoning in reds and want to heal, you already have a huge advantage over them. On that note, you also shouldn't be using Rune Arcs in duels. The whole idea behind a duel is you want a fair fight. Obviously neither of these things apply to invasions as always. Also on invasions I'd like to reiterate once again, if you're doing co-op and you kill invaders that's not ganking. When I mentioned ganking I stated doing 3v1s with the taunters tongue active so that you're luring invaders into your world just to gangbang them. There is a definitive difference between 3 dudes playing the game and killing an invader and 3 dudes having a circle jerk by the boss door while using an item that drastically increases the chances invaders show up with no plans to kill the boss.
Also, allowing your opponent to use some buffs is encouraged because hosts can buff before the duelist spawns and then start the fight with an unfair advantage.
Also worth mentioning that people will sometimes sever if you use more than 5 mana flasks (I've forgotten once or twice and had that happen). This standard was set by the Hallow Arena DLC. This Hallow Arena is also why people tend to allow 2 fast buffs or 1 slow buff, because that's how much you had time for in those DLCs.
Why have a rule around great runes? Seems like a weird one. Everyone has access to them, so whats the issue? Or are they disabled for one party going in or something?
Indeed, we now say to each other eg "if you're not careful you'll be maidenless". Usual reply is "wait wut? I can get girls" etc 🤣 omg. Bottom line, don't do maidenless behaviour, it's not cool.
The most memorable invasion I ever got was in ds3. I was invaded in Irithyll near the bonfire guarded by 2 sulyvahn beasts and the invader just sat back and watched me fight the 2 beasts, afterwards he clapped for me and left. It was really a nice gesture, because I was struggling a bit with the area and I didn't want to do everything again. Plus after beating the 2 beasts I had no flasks left (and i was a pyromancer) so he could have killed me anytime he wanted, both during and after the fight. (faith in) humanity restored.
Had one time in DS3, I was making my way thru Archdragon peak and put my controller down to go to the bathroom hadn't realized I was still embered. When I came back I had a sliver of life left and there was blood all around my character as well as a drop that someone left. They left me about 20 embers, I guess they must have realized I was away and they decided not to kill me left me some embers and left my world.
Sounds like something I would do. I had a 90% success rate with my brand of invasions. I would mimic veil, sit back, wait, and do nothing. Sometimes when I got bored I would look for them, but often, The painted world would do my job for me. I called it patient souls. Hell, the other day I was creeping around caleid in other people's worlds in a full mushroom set and a host talisman to blend in better. I figure if I'm hanging about, I'm helping out the hosts because they can't be invaded by a more competent duelist (when I fought I might have won 5% of the time in DS3).
Had this happen with a mad bro in DS3 he followed me around trying to block the paths of the enemies I was trying to kill. Those giant tree monster in Farron’s Swamp.i popped a Giant Seed and he started attacking them too and helped me clear them. He then helped me clear the way to the Abyss Watchers where we used our last flasks and then had a proper duel. It ended in a double KO. He got his tongue and I just started at the nearest bonfire with a now quick run to the boss. Very memorable fight.
Favourite part of invasions is the ones I run around with a solo host and simply spend time with them. One particular Watchdog invasion, I ended up waggling (block spam) to signal I was friendly, and just went around with them and cheered them on. We killed Heysel and Hodrick together, I watched them solo the Exile twins, and we finished by staring out over Farron Keep together. Walking back to the ladder down, I faced the host and bowed. They had one hit left on their HP bar. I could've killed them, but I black crystalled out and let them be. There's something great about having a visitor to spend time with you, letting you know you're not alone.
Another thing I like to throw out there is when you're in fight clubs, it is A-OK to drink your red flask to heal after each duel (assuming your the winner) and to allow those who win a chance to reset themselves👍
Another thing to note during duels: do not stand over someone's summoning sign and attacking as soon as they load in ... that's top tier maidenless behavior
Too many people will gesture as either a host or invader and then get upset that the other party doesn't reciprocate. If they do great, but 100% can't expect it in invasions.
Idk why ppl get upset when the host goes straight up to attack you, should be expected. As a mound maker I would use the emotes to check if the host was hostile or if they were friendly and then win their trust and screw them later So don't trust invaders
They were trying to play a game called "I win". It involves very carefully stacking a house of cards. You just decide to walk over and flip the whole fucking table on them.
@@bibleblk same, I'm tired of full bull armor enemies that buff themselves three times then buff both their weapons then drink a friggin physic for the tears of denial effect. Then they get salty af when you actually win the duel by using a unique build with magic and incantations that aren't even commonly used. I love this game so much but lately...dueling has felt really bad. It's like you're dueling the same opponent over and over and over. They'll always have meta amounts of poise and vigor and whatever weapon or weapon art that is meta or is completely broken, like that pebble stone weapon art. Oh and the added teabag or point down at the end of the fight when they win is just the cherry on top. I try to duel other mages but all they seem to do is spam stars of ruin repeatedly. Same goes for blood builds....spamming bloodswarm over and over...In an invasion, I get it, do what ya gotta do. But in a duel, player versus player, one versus one....what do these people get out of winning in such a cheap way? What do they lose by losing the fight? It makes no sense. Same thing goes for one-shot builds. Boring...just a boring ass boring build that relies on doing one thing.
IMPORTANT NOTE: the reason you don’t use healing flasks in duels is because the host has double the flasks of any duelist or invader. This means that any situation that allows healing effectively gives the host double the health of their opponent.
Yeh it ain't as bad as it used to be, DS1 invaders couldnt use flasks at all and in DS3 the host had extra max health on top of the double healing flasks. I suppose it was intended to balance invaders being able to use level enemies to their advantage but it really screws duels
Me and the boys made a rule while we cooped with each other that if the invader waved or bowed we would duel em 1v1 and if they immediately attacked we bonked em. Gave nicer players a better chance to win
Personally I invade specifically to fight multiple people at once, most other good invaders do so as well so my advice would be to only give this courtesy to invaders that don't seem that skilled.
If one wanted a duel he could go to dueling area , the whole fun of invasion is jumping on others unannounced and fighting multiple enemies in different situations

Whenever I get invaded I just curl up into a ball. I started it as a joke because I just don’t like dealing with invaders especially if I’m playing with friends or need help in an area. For the most part, they just stare at me and I’ve had a couple just leave. Seeing their confused reactions sometimes is quite funny.
Cowboy does pvp regularly and has done it for a loooong time, yet he still talks to the other prominent pvp channels to present a unified opinion, what a gentleman!
Just a tip. Don’t ever waste your flasks at the beginning of the Duel as the opponent may not do it and take advantage of the situation. Not everyone is willing to follow
Actually it's best to leave the duel if you see someone used a flask I didn't know at first that it's banned but after getting two reactions i stopped using if others start using too i couldn't understand the rules and would continue using

This is great. Elden ring is the first souls like that I completed, and definitely the first PVP game that I have participated in this genre. A lot of players that I have dueled with have shown this kind of etiquette, and I did not know what was going on, so I may have fight out of ignorance or ignored their attempts at a fair game. I didn’t know about a majority of the stuff! Especially the fight clubs, now I will look for them. This will definitely help me be a better PVP player and more than likely have a better experience, hopefully others will benefit as well. Cheers!
Is there a reason this should be common sense? I mean it’s a buff isn’t it? What if your build works with the health boost (like a lot of the blood mage spells for self inflicted damage) or is it just assumed that a player shouldn’t use a rune arc and should level his vigor better?

I have a love hate relationship with ganks. extremely maidenless behavior. but in every From game, nothing feels better than successfully smashing 3 players trying their hardest to cheese you with the most broken stuff in the game

If you heal whoever you're fighting is just going to default to what cheese they have access to, if someone heals I just simply stars of ruin until they're dead, healing isn't fun and neither is cheese😂😂
Tbh people use the soulborne dueling rules in ER, but not everyone play soulsborne titles before, ER is many people first time souls game, so they just dont know any rules that exist in the previous community. For coop and invasion just do whatever you like.
Well, you can tell when its a fight club. The Host is generally within arm's reach, watching the fight, and not cowering on a place out of reach. Even if they're sitting on a roof, they need to be reachable. Besides, anyone that hosts a Fight Club isn't doing it for the Souls/Runes. Not since Dark Souls 1 has that been a viable source of "income". My knowledge of Hosting for Fight Clubs is that you stay within view, keep an eye on waiting contestants, and provide backup healing when people might need it. So, say someone runs out of flasks, and they only get two and its just not enough to top off their chonker of a HP bar? You toss down a Warming Stone for them, so they can finish healing up. In older games, it was commonplace for the Host to run Warmth, an old Pyromancy Spell that healed just the same as a Warming Stone, but floated in mid-air. That way, they could heal. Because in Dark Souls 1 and 2, Invaders couldn't heal with Estus. They had to use Faith Healing, or items. So, it was courtesy to provide that healing for free. After all, they are fighting for both your entertainment, and for the smattering of Souls you got. Note - The majority of that info, you probably already knew... Buuuut, if someone new to the series comes along, they might read this and kinda understand how they're supposed to go about it.
@@MrJinglejanglejingle not to be a contrarian, but i did make like 4 million runes one day just host fight clubs. i consider it a perk, not the main incentive. it's fun! i get to dress all wacky and spam raising my torch up and down while running circles around the winner.
I really miss the purple phantoms from Ds3. Perfect for fight clubs since you got rewards for killing other summons, or for being an unpredictable invading variable. I'm disappointed by the lower multiplayer limit but I guess it'd be too much for the open world.
I really miss the duels in ds3 arena after pontifs boss fight. I remember there was like 6 dudes all spectating and everyone will respectfully wait their turn. No heals during the fight but you called surrender if you didn't want to die 😆
As someone who is more PVE because I'm not that great at pvp in any game, helpful stuff like this video help encourage me to give it a try. Like you said not everyone knows these unspoken rules, and helping spread the info can lead to more fun in the community
Definitely do, it's super fun (as long as no one is cheating)! I am more interested in invasions, because I prefer non-meta level pvp, but duels can be fun, too, and some of the weirdest and funniest shit happens in pvp in these games.

lol dude it's so aids, between free health regen glitches instakill exploits and people spamming bhs so they won't ever fight you. the pve is much more fulfilling, but if you're gonna pvp opt for duels honestly or maybe even try being a hunter summon. or just find a better pvp game.
@@batialexis9339 the thing is, the things they've listed aren't really fun to counter. Yes, you can technically counter a one shot bleed build and yes, you can eventually chase down a bloodhound stepper but it's not very fun to learn to do either of those. That's why they recommend not doing PvP right now since many people have builds that are not very fun to play against.

It's actually really fascinating how this level of etiquette evolved over the course of the souls games, especially since it was all unspoken, it just naturally happened.
It took me a while and I am one of those new players you talk about but the game is so much better when you follow simple, honourable guidelines. Everyone is just looking for a fair fight
side note: the way i understood it in dark souls - bowing usually means you’re ready. if you bow and start buffing you can confuse your opponent who might have thought you was ready to fight.
That's not really a rule. People will bow or gesture to say hello and sign up for an honourable fight. Walking towards someone is generally a sign of you being ready or shield/block spamming and outright attacking...
If that's the rule, i'm very guilty lol. bowing's the first thing i do, always, then buff. To show that I'm ready, I tend to run in circles or just jitter my character left and right
Idc what happened. When somone invades and my buddy and I win it’s instant T bags, I would expect the same when I’m invading. Taking that stuff too seriously or getting your feelings hurt is kinda…weird.
Key word here is invasion. Don't really care. There aren't any rules. In certain situations, I will test out a quick gesture if I can secure a 1v1 and turn it into a duel. If not, then no holds barred.
Regarding PVP, there are a few rules... You do not talk about PVP. If someone yells "Stop!", goes limp, taps out, the fight is over. Only two guys to a fight. One fight at a time. No shirts, no shoes. Fights will go on as long as they have to. If this is your first night at Elden Ring, PVP, you have to fight.

I haven’t been in a fight club in Elden Ring yet, but a good thing about hosting fight clubs in previous DS titles is the host gets souls/runes for the death of the any invader that dies weather you did it or not. Also invaders beware. If you invade a fight club and don’t one shot the host…the other fight clubbers WILL gank you.

@@philipfahy9658 I get to play more than the people on my friends list, they’re just past Stormveil, and I’m in the Haligtree. When I do jolly cooperation with them, I’m not trying to ruin an invaders day. I just want to explore the game with my friends, and they’re interrupting that. I just tell my friends to run to the nearest grace, while I try to deal with the invader. Sometimes I take him out, sometimes I don’t. It is kinda funny watching my friends run off, while I’m trying to get the invader to 1v1 me. Especially when they beeline the host and catch a Gransax to the back of the head.
The dark souls pvp scene had some cancerous characters, but elden ring really opened up to the mainstream scrubs from other games lol, ofc the vast majority are just fine, but we probably got a fuck ton of LOL players and such.
I actually really appreciate this because I know it took me a while to realize not to use red flasks. And it wasn't until one guy performed the "super sippy flask" thing that I realized what he meant, and even then he was the second player to actually show me that. Had a few fun PVP duels and invasions in ER but a lot of my experiences have been less than savory. Worst experience was in a duel where guy spawned me in while he had a Carian Phalanx. I didnt bother bowing and just immediately buffed and dodged. Still lost and it's still the most bitter loss for me. On the other end, I once invaded a guy who was hanging out at the entrance to War-Dead with a phantom and I gestured at him and he ignored and just went to summon again. Attacked him and he panic rolled off the side. I felt bad about that so I put my golden sign down until he summoned me and I helped him beat the boss. My point being that as long as you have a good experience, win or lose, PVP has done its job. Getting all the newbies to understand the etiquette is what's going to make it truly fun again.
It so weird having this "code of conduct" being broken down like this. It's just second nature to me at this point, this kind of made me feel nostalgic right now. I really appreciate this video. There are a lot of new people willing to "honour tradition", but just don't know the details, so this is very nice to see.
This is me 100% I tried a few duels for the first time after beating the game 3 times. And never playing previous souls titles aside from Sekiro. I gestured and let them apply buffs and didn't know not to drink a flask, they didn't say anything but definitely not completely intuitive.
Totally feel that. I played all of the souls games and got pretty into the pvp in all of them. This is stuff that I've picked up on ages ago. It's nice that there's a whole new community of people coming to a souls game

I love the souls pvp. Most people are super respectful, and its one of the fewer games where i never tilted at a defeat, even if the opponent was toxic. I'm pretty new to the souls fandom, being my first game elden ring but i like the way they roll with pvp. My first experience with pvp was with a guy who the moment i saw he was naked, i knew i was gonna get my ass handed on a silver plate. But instead of instantly rocking my shit, he pulled up the telescope, looked into my character's face (Guts cosplay) and then clapped. I felt good because first, someone cared about the two hours i spent making the Guts face and second, i was pretty close to beating him but i got too greedy lmao. If by any chance this guy reads this, you're a legend dude
I really hope a lot of new players see this and take notes. I went and did some duels, and i consistently came across this same person with rivers of blood, that was spamming me as i was spawning in. This was not cool. I tried to be friendly when he summoned me on consequent occasions, but he would attack me while i gestured or would run away from for some absurd reason…..
I’ve been uploading fun Elden Ring PVP content for about 2 weeks now, but I’ve been learning more and more about the “rules” and I gotta say, I’ve enjoyed my experience in PVP. Ran into a few cheaters on PS5, but overall it’s been really fun. If you ever run a tournament or something on PS5 I’d love to fight 😎👌🏽
@@nikola4955 Yes cheating on ps5 is a thing. People edit save files and upload it to their psn cloud, download it and bam. They have more than a 99 stat for everything. Basically infinite everything because the game can’t even register with the values being so high.
"You should expect no courtesy as an invader." This. In fact, imo an invader should *never* show courtesy to their target unless it's a very clear fight club. Alot of times the courtesy that hosts and summons do show you are not genuine and made to get you off guard and easier to kill via, a surprise attack. Also people who try to force the no healing rule on invaders outside of fight clubs are smooth-brains.
I had a moment where I attacked another invader, and I don't know if my actions were justified. After doing several invasions where every time I would end up in a 3v1 and absolutely being stomped by one guy spamming spells while two others relentlessly chasing me down with weapon art and such. Then I finally found myself refreshingly in a 1v1 situation that seemed fair (not that I expect that as an invader). Anyway me and the host bowed to eachother and started fighting an even match where I seemed to be slightly ahead. Blades clashed and blood flew for quite some time as flasks were emptied. Then out of nowhere another invader appeared and snuck up to yhe host with the scarlet rot dragon spell. He was hit hard and barely able to survive as his life started to deplete. And I don't know what it was, but maybe I was so tired of being spammed down by these overpowered spells (this was also before patch), that instead of jumping on the host like a wounded animal, I put my self between him and the other invader and started beating him down to a critical state, so that he just ran away in disbelief, probably thi king what the hell was wrong with me. When I then turned around, the host waited there observing quietly as he bowed to me, I bowed back. It was an wholesome moment to be sure... Sadly he ended up being butt stomped by the erdtreeboss in the capital street where we were fighting shortly after. This became longer than intended... In previous titles I learned all of this from playing. The community was solid back then. Now, it would be so hard to learn by playing. I still use the old ways and it confuses many a player.
With all the hot meta talk in the PVP scene at the moment, it would be awesome to get these guys together (Scott, Oro, Prod, Peeve, Dist, etc.) and discuss (possibly debate) it at length in a podcast like format, hosted by Cowboy.
Thoughts on buffs: They were ok in DkS1-3 because they weren't as powerful, didn't last as long, and had better counterplay (dueling charm, or running out the buff's time). That counterplay isn't as available in ER. Buffs last longer (70-180 seconds for most buffs) so you can't wait them out, and they're stronger (35% Phys dmg reduction, 60% magic damage reduction, 15% attack power). Yes Law of Regression exists, but probably 66% or more of duelists don't have the stats for it. I think the rule should be: maximum 2 buffs (and a blue flask to get back to full FP), and if you can pull off more DURING the fight, good for you. ALSO, if you buff, you MUST let your opponent put on the same amount of buffs (if they choose to) before attacking.
Almost all of the buffs are heavily nerfed in pvp though. Like by 50%... Also 90 seconds in a duel is not long, one of the best buffs lasts that long. Most of my duels go for about 2-3 minutes. Not to mention everyone has a flask that buffs them for free each duel, no level required to use it. The rule with that though is that all that healing shit shouldn't be allowed but people still use it sadly... I see no issue with buffs, makes winning against them all the more better.
Competetive ladder tryhards dont do free buffs because the dmg is too high anyway and imo thats great if you start a distance away you can get off a buff without being punished but the fight starts right after emote
This is great. I was always confused to why some people were making these videos of them doing one-on-one and then getting pissed off if someone didn't emote or buffed or used potion. Someone in the comments gave me a brief explanation but I'm glad this video is up so I can learn more
What id give to have all of our new community members watch this video. I have never seen this many people disregarding these behaviors. I'm not particularly mad at them because like i said alot of them are new, but then at the same time I picked up on most of these rules my first time playing a souls game blind.
Really appreciate you covering this. Especially with all the newer souls players that Elden Ring brought in. I've tried telling people about pvp etiquette but after so many "Quit gatekeeping, let people play how they want" I just gave up
Gatekeeping should only involve NOT trying to shame people for how they play in PvE (as in using summons, bleed builds etc) but in PvP etiquette of some kind should be observed. IMO people who say "it's just a game" are almost guaranteed to be dicks in real life in certain situations as well.

@@dudenameddylan2791 I’ve seen people go as far as to say that invasions should be affected by passwords and/or have an option to turn them off entirely just because they are “ruining the pve experience for players,” and it’s so painfully obvious that those are brand new players to the souls series because anyone with a bit of experience knows that invasions have been in the series for 13 years and aren’t going anywhere. Tbh this whole debate about pvp in souls shouldn’t even be a thing, the invasion timer exists for a reason, and if getting killed by an invader and having your progress set back by like 2-3 minutes at most is enough to “ruin your experience” then you probably shouldn’t be playing the game at all

Most all of the features some people are arguing to change is what made these games special in the first place. And the tight-nit community that evolved from these games just adds to the formula. Sucks being labeled as a gatekeeper for just being passionate about a game series I've spent over a decade playing, ya know?
I've been playing since demons souls and had duels where we each took each other down to low health. Both healed, bowed then kept going. Very very rare but we fought each other many many times without backstab fishing n stuff. It was mutual respect.
I don't know if this has been commented before, but while I do hate ganks that's also why I love them. It's a different kind of invasion when you hunt a gaggle of bad players trying to tip the scales in their favor to the minutiae, and the elation is much more than what is typical when you finally defeat them. Not to mention they are a font of more prolonged invasions where you really have to strategize as an invader. I also have had the best bromances with co-invaders during such ganks, it really feels like you're a part of a greater invader community within these From games.
I’ve been playing Elden Ring for almost 100 hours and this is my first time ever hearing about PvP etiquette. I’ve only invaded once and it was because a NPC told me to. I thought it’d advance a quest line if I did it. I may have invaded a fight club unknowingly. Not being able to easily communicate with others makes this game a lot more difficult to navigate. Is there a discord server for the community?
I’ve had so many people de-summon me because I use law of regression. They buff three times and I’m just like NOPE! You can see a little piece of them die when you do it lol.

What seems to happen to me is that we’ll be in a 2v2, and I’ll see my co-invader about to get beaten so I’ll run over to help them and hit the dude they’re fighting, ably to have them then turn on me like I interrupted their duel. IT’S AN INVASION!! I’m trying to help you dangit! The last time that happen (seriously the same thing happened like 3 times) I just left… let ‘em fight by themselves if their gonna be a butt about accepting help
Nobody made a list of unspoken rules like this for dark souls 3 but when I played lots of pvp in dark souls 3 I seen a lot of these unspoken rules in the area just past pontiff boss fight had a lot of time put into fighting there with the farron greatsword
Two completely maidenless behaviours I have met in duels: 1. I am summoned, I see them, open the menu to greet and they just attack me during the bow. 2. I arrive only to see the opponent stand far away. Okay, I approach to greet and then get oneshot with the Carian Parry's invisible sword projectiles for over 2000 damage. Also, if anyone uses Bloodhound step or Moonveil, for me that's a signal for anything goes and I will too use broken weapon arts and spells on you.
If someone heals during duels (happens rarely) just return to your world if you are the summoned one, that's my way of telling them not to do it. When i'm doing coop and we get invaded i try to be nice and even let the invader 1v1 (with healing if he wants to) but as soon as i see RoB or other really toxic builds like fingerprint shield it's a real fight. Small side note: using a heavy thrusting weapon with piercing fang (aow) you can easily counter shield pokers.
With the 1.04 patch you can finally see the SteamID of people you've played with in the PC version. Been happily reporting AFKers all week long, with small video clips as proof. Bandai Namco is probably sick of hearing from me by now, but I don't care.
@@TymaDem Away From Keyboard. Basically some people like to use Torrent to jump up to places that invaders can't get to and just relax. Then they wait for hunters to kill the invader, or wait for the invader to leave so they get free runes and a rune arc for doing nothing.

I propose something other than attacking healing/excessive buffs: I kick the player using the severance tool. To me attacking legitimises the player using it and obviously there’s the potential for loss. You kick them a couple times and they get the idea. If more people adopt it then everyone will understand
Honestly, excessive buffs should be a thing both parties are fucking with. It's way funnier if everyone involved is just sitting there doping up with everything under the sun before constantly weapon bouncing with ironjar and dragonbolt up.
@@FelisImpurrator I mean there were crazy one shot builds with buffs and rings in Dark Souls. One key thing to that is their health had to be under 30% so could easily be one shot. What happens if the other person is doing a pure physical build and doesn’t really buff? That creates a uneven playing field. Like Cowboy says I’m cool with two buffs and a physick. Past that you’re getting kicked
Personally I think rushing them down is better than kicking. Kicking can just be confusing. You attack after 2 buffs they're gonna get the idea pretty quick.
Rushing them down can be equally confusing to some. They can think you are just an asshole using underhanded tactics..“oh so you didn’t let me buff, now anything goes.” And any chance of what could have been an honorable duel is now gone. To each their own, I just think that if they continuously keep getting kicked after healing or buffing 5/6 times, they’ll eventually understand and learn to not do the shit that gets them kicked.

One issue I’ve been having is that when I try to leave a duelists world with the finger severer, they can knock you out of the animation and kill you, if you heal I just leave, but if I can’t and they get a free win, it just pisses me off, I honestly hope they give you permanent I-frames during the animation, or it makes the severer useless
Another "Rule" is that when you summon your opponent, make sure to stay at an ample distance away from them before they arrive; it is very rude to stand up close at the start of the fight (Plus, you'll probably be asking for it because of your opponent's invulnerability period) As a reference for distance, at the Main Academy Gate, you and your opponent are to stand near the second circle of grass surrounding the Grace

A rule that I didn’t see in this video: Tea bagging or crouching repeatedly pre-duel is a universal sign of friendship. I’ve made many unspoken friends this way. Even played hide and go seek with a duelist. I love this community

More than likely they aren't strong in the first place. For example, running a pure faith build with minimum stats in like say the nagakiba. Adding golden vow and electrify armament gets the weapon on par with you. Now stacking +2-3 buffs is where I draw the line. But at the same time, you do a duel to fight someone at their best and not their worst. Most builds using buffs need the buffs to do damage near a pure strengrh build for example
Voice comms are in elden ring, Not sure to what extent but its in the settings. As long as both parties have it enabled you should be able to hear each other. More people should really enable it. would be a lot more fun for pvp and especially invasions.
I really have to disagree about allowing buffs. Frost breath is part of my build, you're not going to just allow me to cast that. I get the buff doesn't deal damage the instance it's cast, but if you made a build around buffs, then earn them, just like any caster has to learn spacing, timing, and poise

frost breath is not a buff. But builds like faith or int or some hybrid build may use buffs to get on equal level or footing with you. For example, a pure strength build will out damage a pure faith build using weapons do to split damage, raw ar, etc. So allowing them to buff is basically saying, hey I'm at my best you get to your best and lets see who wins. If you don't, then there is zero reason for players to go into other builds that aren't optimized without a buff. Especially with ashes of war like bloodhounds to chase down your opponent there really is no time to buff. Again. its your choice. But don't be surprised if you get ganked because it is seen as scummy
I'm old school. I dont heal, and if somebody heals I'm out. Usually at higher levels you're dealing with vets so its usually good. It's the noobs that screw everything up.
never chug your flasks before a duel, its is very acceptable to drink a flask after finishing a fight, if the person who summoned your red sign has phantoms who behave honorably and take you on 1 at a time its perfectly acceptable to heal between each combatant if you are the red.

Honestly I’m guilty of healing but tbh I only drink the amount of flasks Ik they’ll have, Ik not everyone is like this and it’s just easier not to heal. But fr keep the flasks cause I’ve had people heal before me. So I’d say just to be on the same side don’t drink your flasks unless they do.
Great video as always, Cowboy, but there is one small mistake. You do not need need the tongue to summon additional golds in any case, you only need the tongue to summon a second red sign. I get that your point was to consider that tongues are sometimes necessary to run fight clubs, and that's a valid point, but there's also a setting in options worth mentioning. Under network settings you want "send summon sign" set to ENABLE. This allows your gold sign to appear in worlds with adversaries already present. Something I’m not sure is accepted etiquette but should be, if you invade and the host starts running to the nearest site of grace, let them. I do this all the time, I get invaded and get to a site of grace before I turn around to fight, just so that if I lose (I’m pretty bad at pvp) I won’t have lost 100,000 runes.
As someone who frequently invades, I have my own opinions on certain behavioral things. Firstly, I tend to reciprocate duels if it's obvious from the get go that's what you want to do, but I may also heal during the fight if I get hit with a particularly bad lag spike from me or the opponent or if the game decides to drop frames for no reason as it's sometimes wont to do. I fully expect you to start healing YOURSELF if I do. I wouldn't ever use a heal flask in a proper duel, however. Second, I expect opponents to be non aggressive at the beginning if they want to initiate a duel, if you start buffing as I get close (and weren't doing so as soon as I spawned in) I'm expecting a duel usually, so I'll generally let an opponent get off a few buffs and wait for a gesture before going in, but if you buff too much or don't "start" a duel with a gesture or an attack into nothing, I'm expecting this to be an all out brawl. I also think ganks are fine, as an invader I fully expect to go up against groups of players, particularly with the way this game handles invasion pvp in general. I've done the rare gank myself and I've BEEN ganked more times than I can count. Gank spanking is honestly part of the fun for me. (also yeah I only consider it a gank when they're waiting for invaders, and not simply just playing the game) Fromsoft games are inherently about overcoming unfairness, so what's better than beating the odds and coming out on top against a bunch of people who stacked every advantage in their favour that they reasonably could? Obviously it leads to frustrating death more often than not, but the wins in my case are so much more satisfying than the losses. The truly maidenless behaviour is AFK hiding. That shit is repulsive and unfun for everybody. Also, just a sidenote, I consider healing through using the dedicated heal spells to be a completely fine thing to do in duels if you can actually manage to get it off.
I wish there was a better way to get invaded solo without using the extra item after activating MP. Whenever I do use it, it immediately summons someone to invade my game, which sometimes will kill me due to some OP cheese builds or the players spawning on top of a canyon in Caelid. I wouldn’t complain about dying if this feature didn’t feel like a duel summon sign with too many extra steps.

A big thing I forgot to mention, but one of the main reasons healing is so frowned upon is duels is because the host has double the amount of flasks so if you're summoning in reds and want to heal, you already have a huge advantage over them. On that note, you also shouldn't be using Rune Arcs in duels. The whole idea behind a duel is you want a fair fight.
Obviously neither of these things apply to invasions as always. Also on invasions I'd like to reiterate once again, if you're doing co-op and you kill invaders that's not ganking. When I mentioned ganking I stated doing 3v1s with the taunters tongue active so that you're luring invaders into your world just to gangbang them.
There is a definitive difference between 3 dudes playing the game and killing an invader and 3 dudes having a circle jerk by the boss door while using an item that drastically increases the chances invaders show up with no plans to kill the boss.
Also, allowing your opponent to use some buffs is encouraged because hosts can buff before the duelist spawns and then start the fight with an unfair advantage.
And if said host is using rune arcs then the red should be allowed to pop as many buffs as needed for a fair playing field
Also worth mentioning that people will sometimes sever if you use more than 5 mana flasks (I've forgotten once or twice and had that happen).
This standard was set by the Hallow Arena DLC. This Hallow Arena is also why people tend to allow 2 fast buffs or 1 slow buff, because that's how much you had time for in those DLCs.
Why have a rule around great runes? Seems like a weird one. Everyone has access to them, so whats the issue?

The most memorable invasion I ever got was in ds3. I was invaded in Irithyll near the bonfire guarded by 2 sulyvahn beasts and the invader just sat back and watched me fight the 2 beasts, afterwards he clapped for me and left. It was really a nice gesture, because I was struggling a bit with the area and I didn't want to do everything again. Plus after beating the 2 beasts I had no flasks left (and i was a pyromancer) so he could have killed me anytime he wanted, both during and after the fight.

Had one time in DS3, I was making my way thru Archdragon peak and put my controller down to go to the bathroom hadn't realized I was still embered. When I came back I had a sliver of life left and there was blood all around my character as well as a drop that someone left. They left me about 20 embers, I guess they must have realized I was away and they decided not to kill me left me some embers and left my world.
Sounds like something I would do. I had a 90% success rate with my brand of invasions. I would mimic veil, sit back, wait, and do nothing. Sometimes when I got bored I would look for them, but often, The painted world would do my job for me. I called it patient souls. Hell, the other day I was creeping around caleid in other people's worlds in a full mushroom set and a host talisman to blend in better. I figure if I'm hanging about, I'm helping out the hosts because they can't be invaded by a more competent duelist (when I fought I might have won 5% of the time in DS3).
Had this happen with a mad bro in DS3 he followed me around trying to block the paths of the enemies I was trying to kill. Those giant tree monster in Farron’s Swamp.i popped a Giant Seed and he started attacking them too and helped me clear them.
He then helped me clear the way to the Abyss Watchers where we used our last flasks and then had a proper duel. It ended in a double KO. He got his tongue and I just started at the nearest bonfire with a now quick run to the boss. Very memorable fight.

Favourite part of invasions is the ones I run around with a solo host and simply spend time with them. One particular Watchdog invasion, I ended up waggling (block spam) to signal I was friendly, and just went around with them and cheered them on. We killed Heysel and Hodrick together, I watched them solo the Exile twins, and we finished by staring out over Farron Keep together.
Walking back to the ladder down, I faced the host and bowed. They had one hit left on their HP bar. I could've killed them, but I black crystalled out and let them be. There's something great about having a visitor to spend time with you, letting you know you're not alone.

Too many people will gesture as either a host or invader and then get upset that the other party doesn't reciprocate. If they do great, but 100% can't expect it in invasions.
Idk why ppl get upset when the host goes straight up to attack you, should be expected.
As a mound maker I would use the emotes to check if the host was hostile or if they were friendly and then win their trust and screw them later

I love this game so much but lately...dueling has felt really bad. It's like you're dueling the same opponent over and over and over.
They'll always have meta amounts of poise and vigor and whatever weapon or weapon art that is meta or is completely broken, like that pebble stone weapon art. Oh and the added teabag or point down at the end of the fight when they win is just the cherry on top.
I try to duel other mages but all they seem to do is spam stars of ruin repeatedly. Same goes for blood builds....spamming bloodswarm over and over...In an invasion, I get it, do what ya gotta do.
But in a duel, player versus player, one versus one....what do these people get out of winning in such a cheap way? What do they lose by losing the fight? It makes no sense.
Same thing goes for one-shot builds. Boring...just a boring ass boring build that relies on doing one thing.
IMPORTANT NOTE: the reason you don’t use healing flasks in duels is because the host has double the flasks of any duelist or invader. This means that any situation that allows healing effectively gives the host double the health of their opponent.
When you put it this way it's reasonable. Had my first duels yesterday but used healing.

Yeh it ain't as bad as it used to be, DS1 invaders couldnt use flasks at all and in DS3 the host had extra max health on top of the double healing flasks. I suppose it was intended to balance invaders being able to use level enemies to their advantage but it really screws duels
Plus it forces you to bum rush the guy if u hit him cuz he will just heal otherwise

Me and the boys made a rule while we cooped with each other that if the invader waved or bowed we would duel em 1v1 and if they immediately attacked we bonked em. Gave nicer players a better chance to win
Personally I invade specifically to fight multiple people at once, most other good invaders do so as well so my advice would be to only give this courtesy to invaders that don't seem that skilled.
If one wanted a duel he could go to dueling area , the whole fun of invasion is jumping on others unannounced and fighting multiple enemies in different situations

Whenever I get invaded I just curl up into a ball. I started it as a joke because I just don’t like dealing with invaders especially if I’m playing with friends or need help in an area. For the most part, they just stare at me and I’ve had a couple just leave. Seeing their confused reactions sometimes is quite funny.
Is there no way to stop being invaded? In GTA you can do an invite only lobby so you only let your friends in.

This is great. Elden ring is the first souls like that I completed, and definitely the first PVP game that I have participated in this genre. A lot of players that I have dueled with have shown this kind of etiquette, and I did not know what was going on, so I may have fight out of ignorance or ignored their attempts at a fair game. I didn’t know about a majority of the stuff! Especially the fight clubs, now I will look for them. This will definitely help me be a better PVP player and more than likely have a better experience, hopefully others will benefit as well. Cheers!

Is there a reason this should be common sense? I mean it’s a buff isn’t it? What if your build works with the health boost (like a lot of the blood mage spells for self inflicted damage) or is it just assumed that a player shouldn’t use a rune arc and should level his vigor better?

Tbh people use the soulborne dueling rules in ER, but not everyone play soulsborne titles before, ER is many people first time souls game, so they just dont know any rules that exist in the previous community. For coop and invasion just do whatever you like.

The problem with fight clubs in this game is that AFK farming is so prominent that it can be really tough to tell the difference
Well, you can tell when its a fight club. The Host is generally within arm's reach, watching the fight, and not cowering on a place out of reach. Even if they're sitting on a roof, they need to be reachable. Besides, anyone that hosts a Fight Club isn't doing it for the Souls/Runes. Not since Dark Souls 1 has that been a viable source of "income".
My knowledge of Hosting for Fight Clubs is that you stay within view, keep an eye on waiting contestants, and provide backup healing when people might need it. So, say someone runs out of flasks, and they only get two and its just not enough to top off their chonker of a HP bar? You toss down a Warming Stone for them, so they can finish healing up.
In older games, it was commonplace for the Host to run Warmth, an old Pyromancy Spell that healed just the same as a Warming Stone, but floated in mid-air. That way, they could heal. Because in Dark Souls 1 and 2, Invaders couldn't heal with Estus. They had to use Faith Healing, or items. So, it was courtesy to provide that healing for free. After all, they are fighting for both your entertainment, and for the smattering of Souls you got.

I really miss the purple phantoms from Ds3. Perfect for fight clubs since you got rewards for killing other summons, or for being an unpredictable invading variable. I'm disappointed by the lower multiplayer limit but I guess it'd be too much for the open world.

I really miss the duels in ds3 arena after pontifs boss fight. I remember there was like 6 dudes all spectating and everyone will respectfully wait their turn. No heals during the fight but you called surrender if you didn't want to die 😆

As someone who is more PVE because I'm not that great at pvp in any game, helpful stuff like this video help encourage me to give it a try. Like you said not everyone knows these unspoken rules, and helping spread the info can lead to more fun in the community
Definitely do, it's super fun (as long as no one is cheating)! I am more interested in invasions, because I prefer non-meta level pvp, but duels can be fun, too, and some of the weirdest and funniest shit happens in pvp in these games.

Yes, you can technically counter a one shot bleed build and yes, you can eventually chase down a bloodhound stepper but it's not very fun to learn to do either of those.
That's why they recommend not doing PvP right now since many people have builds that are not very fun to play against.

side note: the way i understood it in dark souls - bowing usually means you’re ready. if you bow and start buffing you can confuse your opponent who might have thought you was ready to fight.
That's not really a rule. People will bow or gesture to say hello and sign up for an honourable fight. Walking towards someone is generally a sign of you being ready or shield/block spamming and outright attacking...
This, generally the bow starts the fight, I finger snap or hello when people enter buff then bow.
If that's the rule, i'm very guilty lol. bowing's the first thing i do, always, then buff. To show that I'm ready, I tend to run in circles or just jitter my character left and right

Key word here is invasion. Don't really care. There aren't any rules. In certain situations, I will test out a quick gesture if I can secure a 1v1 and turn it into a duel. If not, then no holds barred.

I haven’t been in a fight club in Elden Ring yet, but a good thing about hosting fight clubs in previous DS titles is the host gets souls/runes for the death of the any invader that dies weather you did it or not.
Also invaders beware. If you invade a fight club and don’t one shot the host…the other fight clubbers WILL gank you.

When I do jolly cooperation with them, I’m not trying to ruin an invaders day. I just want to explore the game with my friends, and they’re interrupting that. I just tell my friends to run to the nearest grace, while I try to deal with the invader. Sometimes I take him out, sometimes I don’t. It is kinda funny watching my friends run off, while I’m trying to get the invader to 1v1 me. Especially when they beeline the host and catch a Gransax to the back of the head.

The dark souls pvp scene had some cancerous characters, but elden ring really opened up to the mainstream scrubs from other games lol, ofc the vast majority are just fine, but we probably got a fuck ton of LOL players and such.

Had a few fun PVP duels and invasions in ER but a lot of my experiences have been less than savory. Worst experience was in a duel where guy spawned me in while he had a Carian Phalanx. I didnt bother bowing and just immediately buffed and dodged. Still lost and it's still the most bitter loss for me. On the other end, I once invaded a guy who was hanging out at the entrance to War-Dead with a phantom and I gestured at him and he ignored and just went to summon again. Attacked him and he panic rolled off the side. I felt bad about that so I put my golden sign down until he summoned me and I helped him beat the boss. My point being that as long as you have a good experience, win or lose, PVP has done its job. Getting all the newbies to understand the etiquette is what's going to make it truly fun again.
It so weird having this "code of conduct" being broken down like this. It's just second nature to me at this point, this kind of made me feel nostalgic right now.

This is me 100% I tried a few duels for the first time after beating the game 3 times. And never playing previous souls titles aside from Sekiro. I gestured and let them apply buffs and didn't know not to drink a flask, they didn't say anything but definitely not completely intuitive.

I love the souls pvp. Most people are super respectful, and its one of the fewer games where i never tilted at a defeat, even if the opponent was toxic. I'm pretty new to the souls fandom, being my first game elden ring but i like the way they roll with pvp. My first experience with pvp was with a guy who the moment i saw he was naked, i knew i was gonna get my ass handed on a silver plate. But instead of instantly rocking my shit, he pulled up the telescope, looked into my character's face (Guts cosplay) and then clapped. I felt good because first, someone cared about the two hours i spent making the Guts face and second, i was pretty close to beating him but i got too greedy lmao. I went and did some duels, and i consistently came across this same person with rivers of blood, that was spamming me as i was spawning in. This was not cool. I tried to be friendly when he summoned me on consequent occasions, but he would attack me while i gestured or would run away from for some absurd reason…..
This is why I never put my red sign down and just summon instead lol. That way if the red decides to be a douchebag I have twice the heals they do

@@nikola4955 Yes cheating on ps5 is a thing. People edit save files and upload it to their psn cloud, download it and bam. They have more than a 99 stat for everything. Basically infinite everything because the game can’t even register with the values being so high.

This. In fact, imo an invader should *never* show courtesy to their target unless it's a very clear fight club. Alot of times the courtesy that hosts and summons do show you are not genuine and made to get you off guard and easier to kill via, a surprise attack.
Also people who try to force the no healing rule on invaders outside of fight clubs are smooth-brains.

I had a moment where I attacked another invader, and I don't know if my actions were justified.
After doing several invasions where every time I would end up in a 3v1 and absolutely being stomped by one guy spamming spells while two others relentlessly chasing me down with weapon art and such. Then I finally found myself refreshingly in a 1v1 situation that seemed fair (not that I expect that as an invader).
Anyway me and the host bowed to eachother and started fighting an even match where I seemed to be slightly ahead. Blades clashed and blood flew for quite some time as flasks were emptied. Then out of nowhere another invader appeared and snuck up to yhe host with the scarlet rot dragon spell.
He was hit hard and barely able to survive as his life started to deplete. And I don't know what it was, but maybe I was so tired of being spammed down by these overpowered spells (this was also before patch), that instead of jumping on the host like a wounded animal, I put my self between him and the other invader and started beating him down to a critical state, so that he just ran away in disbelief, probably thi king what the hell was wrong with me.
When I then turned around, the host waited there observing quietly as he bowed to me, I bowed back. It was an wholesome moment to be sure... Sadly he ended up being butt stomped by the erdtreeboss in the capital street where we were fighting shortly after. This became longer than intended... In previous titles I learned all of this from playing. The community was solid back then. Now, it would be so hard to learn by playing. I still use the old ways and it confuses many a player.
The community of ER sucks compared to the old games. A bunch of kids
With all the hot meta talk in the PVP scene at the moment, it would be awesome to get these guys together (Scott, Oro, Prod, Peeve, Dist, etc.) and discuss (possibly debate) it at length in a podcast like format, hosted by Cowboy.
Thoughts on buffs:
They were ok in DkS1-3 because they weren't as powerful, didn't last as long, and had better counterplay (dueling charm, or running out the buff's time).
That counterplay isn't as available in ER. Buffs last longer (70-180 seconds for most buffs) so you can't wait them out, and they're stronger (35% Phys dmg reduction, 60% magic damage reduction, 15% attack power).
Yes Law of Regression exists, but probably 66% or more of duelists don't have the stats for it.
I think the rule should be: maximum 2 buffs (and a blue flask to get back to full FP), and if you can pull off more DURING the fight, good for you. ALSO, if you buff, you MUST let your opponent put on the same amount of buffs (if they choose to) before attacking.
only bots attack during buffs/emotes
Almost all of the buffs are heavily nerfed in pvp though. Like by 50%... Also 90 seconds in a duel is not long, one of the best buffs lasts that long. Most of my duels go for about 2-3 minutes. Not to mention everyone has a flask that buffs them for free each duel, no level required to use it. The rule with that though is that all that healing shit shouldn't be allowed but people still use it sadly...
I see no issue with buffs, makes winning against them all the more better.
Competetive ladder tryhards dont do free buffs because the dmg is too high anyway and imo thats great if you start a distance away you can get off a buff without being punished but the fight starts right after emote
+ if you see someone running at you you should be smart enough to stop buffing
Why two? Why not three or 1? Why not if you can pull one or more off during fight good for you?

3. Single crouch to indicate a friendly match

This is great. I was always confused to why some people were making these videos of them doing one-on-one and then getting pissed off if someone didn't emote or buffed or used potion.

Gatekeeping should only involve NOT trying to shame people for how they play in PvE (as in using summons, bleed builds etc) but in PvP etiquette of some kind should be observed. IMO people who say "it's just a game" are almost guaranteed to be dicks in real life in certain situations as well.

@@dudenameddylan2791 I’ve seen people go as far as to say that invasions should be affected by passwords and/or have an option to turn them off entirely just because they are “ruining the pve experience for players,” and it’s so painfully obvious that those are brand new players to the souls series because anyone with a bit of experience knows that invasions have been in the series for 13 years and aren’t going anywhere. Tbh this whole debate about pvp in souls shouldn’t even be a thing, the invasion timer exists for a reason, and if getting killed by an invader and having your progress set back by like 2-3 minutes at most is enough to “ruin your experience” then you probably shouldn’t be playing the game at all

Most all of the features some people are arguing to change is what made these games special in the first place. And the tight-nit community that evolved from these games just adds to the formula. I've been playing since demons souls and had duels where we each took each other down to low health. Both healed, bowed then kept going. Very very rare but we fought each other many many times without backstab fishing n stuff. It was mutual respect.
The real rules of PvP are
-invade a lvl 20 co-op game
-keep spamming RoB
-drink all of your flasks
-get dunked on by 2 phantoms anyway
-get teabagged
I don't know if this has been commented before, but while I do hate ganks that's also why I love them.
It's a different kind of invasion when you hunt a gaggle of bad players trying to tip the scales in their favor to the minutiae, and the elation is much more than what is typical when you finally defeat them.
Not to mention they are a font of more prolonged invasions where you really have to strategize as an invader. I also have had the best bromances with co-invaders during such ganks, it really feels like you're a part of a greater invader community within these From games.
I’ve been playing Elden Ring for almost 100 hours and this is my first time ever hearing about PvP etiquette. I’ve only invaded once and it was because a NPC told me to. I thought it’d advance a quest line if I did it. I may have invaded a fight club unknowingly. Not being able to easily communicate with others makes this game a lot more difficult to navigate. I’ve had so many people de-summon me because I use law of regression. They buff three times and I’m just like NOPE! You can see a little piece of them die when you do it lol.
Some in game setups are also frowned upon, these include:
-Powerstanced spears, especially cross naginata, with bleed infusion or occult for weapons with intrinsic bleed.
- bloodhounds step is a big no no
-greatshield turtling with a spear or thrusting sword is a big no no
-moonveil and rivers of blood are pretty scummy but they’re not taboo like those aforementioned offenses.

I have invaded and have had hosts who personally summoned a helper and another red so the red could go into hostile areas to hunt random invaders
Other invaders killing me has been the bane of my elden ring pvp experience. Like "yea I was fighting 1v3 but go ahead and kill me bro".
What seems to happen to me is that we’ll be in a 2v2, and I’ll see my co-invader about to get beaten so I’ll run over to help them and hit the dude they’re fighting, ably to have them then turn on me like I interrupted their duel. IT’S AN INVASION!! I’m trying to help you dangit!
The last time that happen (seriously the same thing happened like 3 times) I just left… let ‘em fight by themselves if their gonna be a butt about accepting help

Nobody made a list of unspoken rules like this for dark souls 3 but when I played lots of pvp in dark souls 3 I seen a lot of these unspoken rules in the area just past pontiff boss fight had a lot of time put into fighting there with the farron greatsword
Raya Lucaria is a pretty good arena, but nothing could beat pontiff arena and iron keep bridge. I’m probably biased by nostalgia tho lol
The community was way less toxic back then and had way less kids
Two completely maidenless behaviours I have met in duels: 1. I am summoned, I see them, open the menu to greet and they just attack me during the bow. 2. I arrive only to see the opponent stand far away. Okay, I approach to greet and then get oneshot with the Carian Parry's invisible sword projectiles for over 2000 damage.
Also, if anyone uses Bloodhound step or Moonveil, for me that's a signal for anything goes and I will too use broken weapon arts and spells on you.
If someone heals during duels (happens rarely) just return to your world if you are the summoned one, that's my way of telling them not to do it.
When i'm doing coop and we get invaded i try to be nice and even let the invader 1v1 (with healing if he wants to) but as soon as i see RoB or other really toxic builds like fingerprint shield it's a real fight.
Small side note: using a heavy thrusting weapon with piercing fang (aow) you can easily counter shield pokers.
With the 1.04 patch you can finally see the SteamID of people you've played with in the PC version. Been happily reporting AFKers all week long, with small video clips as proof. Bandai Namco is probably sick of hearing from me by now, but I don't care.

@@TymaDem Away From Keyboard. Basically some people like to use Torrent to jump up to places that invaders can't get to and just relax. Then they wait for hunters to kill the invader, or wait for the invader to leave so they get free runes and a rune arc for doing nothing.

I propose something other than attacking healing/excessive buffs: I kick the player using the severance tool.
To me attacking legitimises the player using it and obviously there’s the potential for loss. You kick them a couple times and they get the idea. If more people adopt it then everyone will understand
Honestly, excessive buffs should be a thing both parties are fucking with. It's way funnier if everyone involved is just sitting there doping up with everything under the sun before constantly weapon bouncing with ironjar and dragonbolt up.
@@FelisImpurrator I mean there were crazy one shot builds with buffs and rings in Dark Souls. One key thing to that is their health had to be under 30% so could easily be one shot.
What happens if the other person is doing a pure physical build and doesn’t really buff? That creates a uneven playing field. Like Cowboy says I’m cool with two buffs and a physick. Past that you’re getting kicked

Personally I think rushing them down is better than kicking. Kicking can just be confusing. You attack after 2 buffs they're gonna get the idea pretty quick.
Rushing them down can be equally confusing to some. They can think you are just an asshole using underhanded tactics..“oh so you didn’t let me buff, now anything goes.” And any chance of what could have been an honorable duel is now gone. To each their own, I just think that if they continuously keep getting kicked after healing or buffing 5/6 times, they’ll eventually understand and learn to not do the shit that gets them kicked.

Youre absolutely right. Gank squads is absolutely maidenless behavior.
One issue I’ve been having is that when I try to leave a duelists world with the finger severer, they can knock you out of the animation and kill you, if you heal I just leave, but if I can’t and they get a free win, it just pisses me off, I honestly hope they give you permanent I-frames during the animation, or it makes the severer useless
I miss the Mound Mashers, sometimes I want to invade as the good guy.

Another "Rule" is that when you summon your opponent, make sure to stay at an ample distance away from them before they arrive; it is very rude to stand up close at the start of the fight (Plus, you'll probably be asking for it because of your opponent's invulnerability period)
As a reference for distance, at the Main Academy Gate, you and your opponent are to stand near the second circle of grass surrounding the Grace
Ive had a couple do that to me...I reacted badly and just melted the first guy, the second tried to cheap shot, and got wrecked three ways to Sunday for it.

At lvl 150 I only fight moonveil, stars of ruin, rivers of blood, spears and colossal swords.

I kind of like ds3 pvp more, there were just so many good spots. I could spend all day just moving around anor Londo. Matter fact I might have to start a new play through

I learned that you couldn’t drink flask when i drank one, the person automatically left and it happened to me another time when i forgot to drink it before the fight and i accidentally clicked the button

Thank you for making this. I’ve been a souls player for 10 years now and I still tend to avoid pvp because of the unspoken etiquette. I have a newfound interest to do some duels now
A rule that I didn’t see in this video:
Tea bagging or crouching repeatedly pre-duel is a universal sign of friendship.
I’ve made many unspoken friends this way.
Even played hide and go seek with a duelist.

More than likely they aren't strong in the first place. For example, running a pure faith build with minimum stats in like say the nagakiba. Adding golden vow and electrify armament gets the weapon on par with you. Now stacking +2-3 buffs is where I draw the line. But at the same time, you do a duel to fight someone at their best and not their worst. Most builds using buffs need the buffs to do damage near a pure strengrh build for example

You forgot the most important rule: let gimmick players do their thing, like the vigor test, the item leaver, bare fists only, etc…
Voice comms are in elden ring, Not sure to what extent but its in the settings. As long as both parties have it enabled you should be able to hear each other. More people should really enable it. would be a lot more fun for pvp and especially invasions.
I really have to disagree about allowing buffs.
Frost breath is part of my build, you're not going to just allow me to cast that.
I get the buff doesn't deal damage the instance it's cast, but if you made a build around buffs, then earn them, just like any caster has to learn spacing, timing, and poise
I don't understand his take about buffs. They're part of a build so you let them use it once? Yeah so are weapons... Are you going to let them hit you?
You do realize frost breath isn’t a buff right. Besides he did say it was up to you to decide on what to do
frost breath is not a buff. But builds like faith or int or some hybrid build may use buffs to get on equal level or footing with you. For example, a pure strength build will out damage a pure faith build using weapons do to split damage, raw ar, etc. So allowing them to buff is basically saying, hey I'm at my best you get to your best and lets see who wins. If you don't, then there is zero reason for players to go into other builds that aren't optimized without a buff. Especially with ashes of war like bloodhounds to chase down your opponent there really is no time to buff. Again. its your choice. But don't be surprised if you get ganked because it is seen as scummy

I'm old school. I dont heal, and if somebody heals I'm out. Usually at higher levels you're dealing with vets so its usually good. It's the noobs that screw everything up.
never chug your flasks before a duel, its is very acceptable to drink a flask after finishing a fight, if the person who summoned your red sign has phantoms who behave honorably and take you on 1 at a time its perfectly acceptable to heal between each combatant if you are the red.
You're confusing invasions and duels. Obviously I'm not gonna chug all my flasks in an invasion because that's moronic.
I would even say it is encouraged to heal between fights... "Equal ground" or "no advantage" so to speak

@@FightinCowboy And I’m saying I was the summoned duelist. There are times players will drink mid-fight in ER and ds and “break rules”. It’s best to at least have flasks for backup. Never drink unless the other person does; it’s needless to put yourself at a possible disadvantage just to hope they’ll get/accept the message.

Honestly I’m guilty of healing but tbh I only drink the amount of flasks Ik they’ll have, Ik not everyone is like this and it’s just easier not to heal. But fr keep the flasks cause I’ve had people heal before me. So I’d say just to be on the same side don’t drink your flasks unless they do.
Great video as always, Cowboy, but there is one small mistake. You do not need need the tongue to summon additional golds in any case, you only need the tongue to summon a second red sign. I get that your point was to consider that tongues are sometimes necessary to run fight clubs, and that's a valid point, but there's also a setting in options worth mentioning. Under network settings you want "send summon sign" set to ENABLE. This allows your gold sign to appear in worlds with adversaries already present.

Something I’m not sure is accepted etiquette but should be, if you invade and the host starts running to the nearest site of grace, let them. I do this all the time, I get invaded and get to a site of grace before I turn around to fight, just so that if I lose (I’m pretty bad at pvp) I won’t have lost 100,000 runes.
As someone who frequently invades, I have my own opinions on certain behavioral things. Firstly, I tend to reciprocate duels if it's obvious from the get go that's what you want to do, but I may also heal during the fight if I get hit with a particularly bad lag spike from me or the opponent or if the game decides to drop frames for no reason as it's sometimes wont to do. I fully expect you to start healing YOURSELF if I do. I wouldn't ever use a heal flask in a proper duel, however.
Second, I expect opponents to be non aggressive at the beginning if they want to initiate a duel, if you start buffing as I get close (and weren't doing so as soon as I spawned in) I'm expecting a duel usually, so I'll generally let an opponent get off a few buffs and wait for a gesture before going in, but if you buff too much or don't "start" a duel with a gesture or an attack into nothing, I'm expecting this to be an all out brawl.
I also think ganks are fine, as an invader I fully expect to go up against groups of players, particularly with the way this game handles invasion pvp in general. I've done the rare gank myself and I've BEEN ganked more times than I can count. Gank spanking is honestly part of the fun for me. (also yeah I only consider it a gank when they're waiting for invaders, and not simply just playing the game) Fromsoft games are inherently about overcoming unfairness, so what's better than beating the odds and coming out on top against a bunch of people who stacked every advantage in their favour that they reasonably could? Obviously it leads to frustrating death more often than not, but the wins in my case are so much more satisfying than the losses.
The truly maidenless behaviour is AFK hiding. That shit is repulsive and unfun for everybody.
Also, just a sidenote, I consider healing through using the dedicated heal spells to be a completely fine thing to do in duels if you can actually manage to get it off.
I wish there was a better way to get invaded solo without using the extra item after activating MP. Whenever I do use it, it immediately summons someone to invade my game, which sometimes will kill me due to some OP cheese builds or the players spawning on top of a canyon in Caelid.
I wouldn’t complain about dying if this feature didn’t feel like a duel summon sign with too many extra steps.
