Gay/Queer films in the mainstream of film making are either ambiguous or weird. They fit into a partly subconscious homophobia, and happiness and fulfilled lives are rarely shown.
Despite our reputation for friskiness we gay men don't get many "happy endings" when it comes to movies. That's why I liked the book and movie "Maurice".
I agree with you on this film. I think the other issue for me was I just didn’t feel anything about any of the characters, which I need, good or bad, so overall it left me old, despite there being things I admired.
The way you described this film is literally Tropical Malady of Apichatpong Weerasethakul. First half is about a gay couple hanging out and second half is this surreal mind-trip that takes place in jungle the whole time.
It is a BRILLIANT film. The otherworldly and deeply hallucinating visuals are intoxicating. I was transported into another universe. Loved it unconditionally.
The first half was deff slick stylish and firing on all cylinders, I feel like there were diminishing returns until he returned to MC two years later. The jungle scene was a bit of a slog for sure.
Honestly man you kinda sound like you liked the first half and didn’t like the second half The part of the review I didn’t like is when you said you might need another watch and saying you were maybe tired or overwhelmed from a long day. Personally I took this as you are waiting to see how other ppl like the movie and than you will shift your opinion to fit the majority - and you saying you might have been tired seems like a excuse to use for later if need be.
Sing Sing is the BEST MOVIE of the year and deserves nominations in most categories. The movie was shot on 16 mm film, in 19 days, with a very small crew. The DP, Pat Scola, should be nominated for an Oscar for cinematography because the visual look, the lighting, the film choice, all created the naturalistic atmosphere to tell the story. Accompanied with Bryce Dessner's score that sells the beautiful scenes and intimate facial expressions. And kudos to the director, Greg Kwedar, who allowed dialogue to be ad-libbed at times, which created the emotional essence throughout the film that tugs at your heart. The cast deserves best ensemble because 90% of the cast are the formerly incarcerated men that participated in the RTA theater program while in Sing Sing and that authenticity shines. And what can you say about Coleman Domingo.... he deserves the Oscar this year, his performance is perfectly understated, and he allows the other men to shine because this is their story. Well Done!! Also, Clarence Maclin and Paul Raci both deserve best supporting nominations. Their performances tie the strings that pull the film to its brilliance. Best movie overall in a very long time and well worth the emotional journey.
You do not read books, are unfamiliar with WSB and have no idea what your talking about. I am deeply saddened a movie like this was shown to you early, for you clearly don't understand or deserve it..
So nasty...😢😢Every one in this movie will go to hell if you don't repent, only Jesus can save you, ask Jesus for forgiveness and he will forgive you 🙏 ..,
If it's so "nasty" why did you click on the video? Was it by any chance to word "queer" that got your attention? You religious people just LOVE clicking on any video having to do with gay men, LOL! Apparently you have never read the Bible verse, "Judge not, that ye be not judged". Judging others is NOT your job.
The “Come as you are” chicken fight meet cute scene was the fuckin coolest part of the movie

This film being based on the same novel by the Author who wrote Naked Lunch...I'm not shocked that some parts of this are strange.
burroughs was such an interesting figure..there’s a 30 min documentary of him & francis bacon just talking that i recommend
Jonathan from TheFilmDrunk the type of guy to create a schedule for wearing each of his clothes so none of them feel left out

"I dont love it" - I know we live in a consumer nightmare, but art doesn't always have to 'please' us.
yeah but the movie is kinda bad though, its not just unpleasing
2:14 - 2:22 how women describe me after going on a date with me
Damn literally everyone says the same thing about it taking a hard turn with the jungle section lmaooo
Given my affinity for Saltburn, I’m almost certain I’m going to love this movie

That pretty much sums up my experience with the movie tonight perfectly!
Sayombhu Mukdeeprom is the goat

I appreciate you always giving honest opinions no matter what. We trust you Jonathan. Can we get a live wrapup now that you're back?
The third act will be the most controversial of the film, but after some thinking, I kinda love it, even if I prefer the better first half.
"I don't really read" is a wild thing to say. Wtf?
I know like even if you don’t you should be embarrassed to admit that!
Andrew is famous thanks to the show Outer Banks.
Definitely one of those love or hate movies as I mostly enjoyed the last half. First half just felt like I've seen this before. Quite slow for me
I see it as COMEDY
I love the length of your reviews! Perfect honestly
Have you seen David Cronenberg's movie "Naked Lunch" from 1991? That one's also based on a novel by Burroughs - and it's also very weird.
Soundtrack by Sinead O'Connor. Major thoroughfare in all cities have been closed down due to high demand.
“…you greedy MF!!” 😂
True though
great meeting you! glad you had a good fest.
I went into this film blind. Not sure what to think 😆
I see it getting best actor Oscar nomination
it looks like an Oscar bait movie
the film is pretty true to the book it's a very short and dreamy read I highly recommend!

I'm personally fine with this film being R rated, but somehow this is worse than the NC-17 rated Blonde like the MPA is broken
"...I don't really read.." well fair enough but did you ever see "2001'... or "Orphee" ?
Thank you, Mr. Drunk!
