My wife thinks I have too many records, but she also thinks I don't pay attention to her, and that I never listen to her.... So she might not have said that actually

Room has become a daunting issue for me. I left my entire collection in storage (about 22,000 albums) in L.A. about four years ago. Since then, I have been given or purchased an additional 11-12 thousand records. And someone is about to give me another collection. The entire basement is jam-packed with records, yet I’ve got another 10 boxes arriving on Tuesday. My wife has been amazingly tolerant, but even she has her limits. So here is my question. Would you like to buy my wife? Good working condition. Only one owner. With the proceeds, I can purchase some much needed new shelving and get rid of that pesky dining room table as you so sensibly suggested.

Very helpful video! Another tip is if you have any Guns N' Roses albums, you could store them with a gun collection or in a garden with roses! Of course you must store them after you either shoot the record with the gun or drag the rose across the records giving it scratches. Both of these would be much more fun then actually listening to it!

Damnitt Robert where were these ideas before I just gave in and finally rented out the airplane hanger? Lol Robert, too funny. Always a laugh to watch, thanks man.
I do have a humorous story concerning my lp collecting habits. Ive been an apt dweller for most my life and early on in my collecting as lps began to accumulate I lost touch with reality in being “inventive” with storage methods…
One day a buddy of mine came over and we were doing a balcony cookout, you know when you could actually cookout on your balcony and not have the cops drive up. Or toss empty beer cans out over the railing at 4 in the morning.
Anyway, my friend was helping get the veggies ready while I tended the grill. He asked “Hey you want to do green beans?” I replied “Sure man! Should be some in the shelf there”
He comes to the balcony with this look of “Rly?” On his face….
“Uh, I cant find the green beans but I did find a few Rush albums…”
Hey, I cant help it if the vegetable, dry food and bottled sauce shelving just so happened to be the perfect 12 x 12 area.
You would not find canned goods in my kitchen much back then, but if you needed a Lynyrd Skynyrd long player welcome to my cooking area circa 1997!
Then again, if I got with the Fithen plan, I could have stored all my Can lps on the corn and bean shelf. Missed opportunities in collecting plague me:(
Then there is the time my gf and I were laying in bed and the entire stack of empty record boxes came crashing down from behind the door and she got up in a huff…pfft..obviously didn’t understand the concept of “You dont get rid of those high quality lp shipping containers!” What a loser she was. Ok, obviously I should have put a shirtless Prince album on the headboard. So I will take some of the blame for that one I guess.
The same buddy at the cookout each afterwords when meeting a new gf of mine would eventually say “But, have you seen the “collection” “ ….So thanks Jarod…you ruined many potential relationships with that lp cock block.
Finally one has to just give in and realize its ok if my couch has stacks of records for armrests. Its really ok.

Another great video, Robert. Gordon is a handsome gent. 🐱
I have curbed my record buying pretty good... not stopped, but weened myself off of going into a shop and buying lots of random stuff not on my list. However, with that said- I have the opposite problem. Because they are so cheap I have been buying far too many CD's. Coupled with an upcoming move to a smaller space, what to do? I ditched many of my jewel caes and am storing my discs in a couple of 1,000 capacity cases. Saved all box set packaging and CD's with unique packaging/cases. Kept all front booklets (you would be surprised how many of those you can cram into a shoebox in alphabetical order!). Made quite a difference! I think the next vinyl record I buy might be the new Stones... IF Target has a copy of the Target Exclusive when I go there to buy the CD on release day 😁😉

If your records are encased in plastic, you can shingle the roof with them. Use strong tape. If the actual "prices" of audiophile releases isn't even enough to stop you from keeping on buying them, having to climb up a ladder in order to play one, might help. For instance UHQR stands for ultra HIGH quality records. That would be pretty high up to climb and darn inconvenient, and maybe when tempted, subconciously you'd think. "NAH, I'd have to climb up that shaky ladder every time I want to play it. They're epensive but good (usually). I know at least one guy who can't stop buying them. Someday they or someone else WILL MAKE MORE!
Andy Williams I wouldn't lump in with Mantovanni and Pat Martino. Andy Williams is the greatest Christmas singer/artist of all time. His Christmas albums went #1 and stayed there. Clear out the porn under your bed. That could be a good place for Christmas records that you only play at Christmas, no sense bumping the back of your head all year long. You can put a bunch of them in your 1950s bomb shelter. The one that your granpap built The Osmond Brothers, Ray Dio, Alfred Alpaka, and Maria Maldaur records can go in there. Soft Cell records can be put in the Cellar. Surf music records can be stored in the bathtub (how often do you really take a bath)? Sell off ones you don't listen to at least once every 30 years.

So far, I haven't run out of space. Only have around 600 LPs, 99% bought from the 1970's-late 1980's. The past year or so, I ordered a few "Homer and Jethro" LPs which I didn't have and were never reissued, from sellers on Discogs. Thing about Homer and Jethro, even still sealed LPs are fairly cheap! A few other LPs, like some early Elvis Presley albums, I have the original (inherited from my aunt), a 70's/80's vinyl reissue, and then a CD reissue. I tend to not get rid of anything.

Oh wow ... simple solution, and a money maker too...
In the early 2000s I got busy and transcoded most of my vinyl collection to hard disk.... and sold off the collection. I got my room back, I get exellent sound and I got a couple of grand selling the vinyl.
My music collection today exists on a 4tb disk as high bitrate MP3 files. The entire collection has been curated to -14 LUFs to match the levels of streaming services, sorted by years or by artist, with playlists for all kinds of different listening experiences.

      As above.
BTW, they are not “listings”. Min is the min price recently sold for. Median is the “kinda average” recently sold for, where you are talking frankly very good+ to near mint. On a good day. These are sales to a private buyer who is prepared to pay a decent amount.
Selling to a dealer, you will get a fraction of that. Forget Max prices, they are real outliers. Maybe a signed copy, or a rare record still in shrinkwrap. I am going to guess, if you are lucky, you can expect half the min price if selling to a dealer, IF the records are in really great shape and IF you are lucky. Of course, your milage may vary, good luck 👍

easy fix. stop wasting money on vinyl. cds generally sound better basic common sense handling and they last forever (i have cds from the 1980s that sound as good as ever and store easily and neatly on 2 bookcases. not buckling wall shelves or milk crates). no degradation from needle wear as with vinyl. i have 1200 discs over 35 years of collecting and can count the few i've had issues with.unlike lps which while looking mint and handled with great care oftentimes skipped with no visible reason. mint. no need to duplicate to files or in an earlier time cassette. car players do the trick and are dirt cheap. easy tracking and no need to lift the tone arm from one track to another track. the last collectible format as after lps and cds what came next to satisfy the collectors passion? nothing. just downloads. and thats boring. lastly, unless you have a room in your house-that leaves out most apartment dwellers-where would you have the room to devote to a sizeable collection? and if you do,whats your option? buckling wall shelves or milk crates everywhere? i came up with vinyl in the 60s. long before tapes and cds. and i loved them. but to be honest, vinyl is a lot of work and for the most part lovers of vinyl are basically addicted to the rituals of playing lps. analog vs digital is purely academic. and kids today have no idea how good cds are. theyve been sold a bill of goods about the greatness of vinyl and not the problems that accompany that format. but maybe living at home they have the luxury of a room they can dedicate their vinyl hobby to. until they end up living in a studio apartment. apples and oranges. a matter of taste. it never got better than the cd. graphics not as easy to read as vinyl, but a hell of a lot better than tapes. plus todays vinyl is way overpriced. when cds first appeared the prices were outrageous and vinyl was cheap. now its just the opposite. i rest my case.

Interesting take. Only you know what you prefer and what is best for you.
However, in my eyes, new vinyl is cheaper now than in the 80’s. Inflation. It took more loaves of bread to buy a vinyl record then, than it does now. Conclusion: I need to go without less to buy a new vinyl these days, than I did back then.
My vinyl collection would be in demand if I wanted to move it on, they are most all high value and in superb condition. I am not sure many people would lust after my CD collection though.
I agree that storage is a huge issue, although I have only 500 records. Never could see the need for people collecting thousands, they will mostly never be heard.
For a real space saver, just stream. Streaming offers CD quality now (or better).
CD’s were ahead of their time, and offer many benefits, I agree, and I still pick them up on odd occasions when I must own the album but it was never released on vinyl. I have an equal amount as I do records (500 or so).
Prices of used CD’s will continue to climb as more people realise just how cheaply they can fill out a collection. Plus who knows how many already went to land fill 😮
      Enjoy your music! 🎧 👍

    • @johnricco5366
      @johnricco5366 ปีที่แล้ว

if you read my post i made all valid points. from durability to storage to collectability. what goes around comes around. cd is coming back. sound quality, durability,no need for duplication,collectability-and storage will move it along. regarding prices. in the 60s and 70s you could go into a used record store and find lps for a few dollars. today try doing that. few used record stores any more, and all you see online are lps sellinbg for $25 and upwards. never saw that in the old days. supposedly high grade vinyl. all a con job,as the prices of cds were in the 80s. now cds are in a normal price range and lps, which as i stated in my post, have little going for them, other than ritual and nostalgia, are ridiculously priced. i see this all the time. for pure convenience and durability,as well as sound and storage space, cds win hands down.@@mike_burke
