So many players on these teams have passed away. Stabler,Branch,Guy, Upshaw,Brown, Dalby,Mann,Thomas,Colzie, Atkinson, Matusak,Tatum,Harris, Mansfield,Webster,Furness,Holmes, Cunningham, Clack,Davis, Greenwood
It was almost fitting that Oakland beat Pittsburgh by 17 points, the exact differential of the Steelers' title game victories the previous two years, 24-13 and 16-10.
In this era, the league was divided into two or three layers. The top layer teams were demonstrably superior in talent and a few other things, and players remained with their clubs longer. Hence dynasties could exist. Hence--even though I'm not much of a follower of GOAT theory--you can make a case that some of the dynasties of the 70s, 60s, or 50s were the greatest teams of all time. Today's NFL is different; teams are roughly equal; QBs and others are [over?]protected; vast amounts of money; and championships seem to go around more freely. Here we are seeing two of the greatest teams of all time. I just get chills when we bring back the old NFL like this, SportsStatsNGrab. I suspect there is still market value in 'old school' football, maybe the NFL should get with it. . . PS this was the only year the Raiders got past the Steelers and it was because the Steelers were minus their All-Pro running backs. The Raiders went on to win the Super Bowl. I might have gone to this game, I can't remember . . .
Right on, Henry! Us old schoolers are mostly turned off by today's product, so they should dig into their film vault and make everything available. I wholeheartedly agree with you concerning your take on the best dynasties.
the real problem with old style is major injuries,huge--many player now have dementia, huge long term hurts--me, subderal hematoma,8 bolts and a plate in elbow, both knees replaced, eye surgeries--so far so good, almost normal but i am lucky!!! many not so lucky...

Notice that short clip someone threw a red smoke grenade on the field... someone did it again in '81 when the Chiefs were in town, I believe it was. Raiders fans were definitely a colorful group.😄
"colorful", that's one way to put it. The homefield advantage was more like 6 points for the Raiders, rather than the normal 3 points for other home teams on account of Oakland's exhuberant fans.
That's right. That information was disclosed in the video, but it still must be emphasized how important it was for the Steelers to be missing that awesome tandem at running back.

People forget, both Harris and Blier were both out with injuries. Without them, they had no effective offense, which mean the defense had to be on the field more than normal. As a result, they simply got worn out and were eventually steamrolled into oblivion.
If only Franco and Rocky could have suited up on defense this day as the Raiders ran all over the Steelers......Stabler only needed to pass 16 times on the day....
The incessant proselytizing of Steeler fans trying to claim 1976 as their year makes me think Pittsburgh fans are bad winners AND bad losers. Oakland had also improved since the Week 1 victory over Pittsburgh and could have scored more than 24 if needed. It was easier to play ball control and run out the clock with how much they had the Steeler offense under control. Franco and Rocky were unlikely to be worth 17 points. What next? Was 1980 really the Steelers' year in spite of being beaten by Oakland, 45-34. Or 1983 when they got barbecued 38-10 by the Raiders in the opening round. FFS Dallas didn't have Calvin Hill or Bob Lilly against Minnesota in 1973 but no one on Dallas whines about getting beaten fair and square by Bud Grant's boys. The Colts were missing their two top QB's in the tiebreaker playoff game against Green Bay in 1965, but I've never heard Baltimore veterans grouse they were the real champions. Craig Morton's arm was almost falling off in SB 5 against Baltimore, but Dallas' job was to overcome adversity and they came up just short. In the same game, Hall of Fame QB Johnny Unitas was lost to the Colts, but Baltimore persevered and triumphed. Pittsburgh earned the title of being the Team of the Seventies, but on this day, as Villapiano said, they got a good old fashioned butt kicking. The more some Steeler fans rationalize this loss, the better this rout looks on them.
Stabler had a year that was one of the best of all-time to that point. Their 3-4 defense was still new to the league and confused blocking assignments. The '72 Redskins came close to defeating the Dolphins and I have no doubt that the '76 Raiders would have also, like you maintained.
@@markgardner9460 The only reason that the Dolphins went undefeated in 1972 was because of the Immaculate Reception. Instead of playing the Steelers, the Dolphins would have had to play the Raiders. The Raiders actually ended the Dolphins winning streak in week 2 of the 73 season. The Raiders finally finished off the Dolphins dynasty in 74. In my opinion the Raiders were the best team in the 70s. The 76 Raiders team wasn’t even the best Raiders team in the 70s. The 74, 75 and 77 Raiders were probably more talented than their 76 team.
@@markgardner9460 Ted Hendricks was a difference maker but that 74 Team was 12-2 and they lost those 2 games by a total of 4 points. In the AFC Championship game they took a 10-3 lead into the 4th Quarter against the Steelers. It should have been a 17-3 lead but they had a TD pass called back. The Steelers were lucky to win that game. They scored 2 TDs in less than a minute after the Raiders had back to back turnovers inside their own 30 yd line. The bottom line is that the Raiders got caught looking ahead to Super Bowl IX and a few bad breaks and bounces of the ball cost them the game. They had beaten the Steelers 33-14 in the playoffs the season before and shut them out in Pittsburgh 17-0 during the 74 regular season. It would be the last time they took the Steelers for granted again. The Steelers beat them 16-10 in the 75 AFC Championship game for the last time in the 70s. In fact, it would be 10 years before the Steelers would beat them again. The Raiders beat them 3 times in one calendar starting with the 76 opener and ending with the week 2 win at Pittsburgh in 77. Franco and Rocky played that day and the Steelers got held to 7 points again
Not that the following numbers have anything to do with anything, but I was surprised to find that in '75 Otis Sistrunk had 13 1/2 sacks, Horace Jones 13 and Tony Cline 11.
No Franco, No Blier, Raiders only won because the Steelers Run Game was crippled. Steelers had no ball Possession and that Great Defense just wore Down
The Raiders got an uncharacteristically B.S. call in their favor during the game against New England. They don't convert on 4th down. Game over. Nope, personal foul against NE for hitting Stabler in the head. Today it's called all the time. In the 70s was NEVER called. Guess they deserved one to go their way in the playoffs. Had a few go against them. Hated the 70s Raiders. Steelers, team of the decade!!

Only reason Steelers won more of these games and SBs than Raiders is because they had Bradshaw, he was even better and smarter at QB than Stabler was still very good though. Oh and the referees and NFL favored them, see the Immaculate deception in 1972. Oakland was way tougher and meaner. @ 9:39 Raiders D-line excessively hammers Terry B. You will Notice Lamb-boy is not far away. He does nothing as he doesn't want the real fight, haha. Lambert's reputation was overblown and overhyped.
Pretty ignorant fans to be jumping onto the field while time was still on the clock. I wonder if Franco & Rocky are healthy, if the outcome woulda been different?
I'm not sure that the outcome would have been different - maybe the score would have been closer, but this was the Raiders year - Stabler had a tremendous year in '76
Yeah, if Rocky and Franco suited up on defense, they might have been more effective this day as Raiders ran all over the uninjured Steeler defense. In fact, Stabler only had to pass 16 times total. If Mann didn't miss a chipshot FG and Raiders didn't turn the ball over twice on downs inside the Steeler 20 running out clock, score would have likely been even more lopsided. Great game for Raider fans but not a very close contest.

Steelers didn't have 2 one thousand yard running backs that game , both Franco Harris and Rocky Blier were were injured. Otherwise the result would have definitely been different. More than likely another Steelers win like the previous years in the AFC championship games against the Raiders,.
@@sportshistorybuff319 And the Steelers lost the 2nd game of the '77 season in Pittsburgh to Oakland 16-7 when they had both Rocky and Franco. Raiders were better at this time.....
@SportsHistoryBuff because they won the 2 previos years in the afc championship game. The running game and defense meant everything., and the two Steelers running backs were out. I'm not saying that the Raiders weren't a great team but, second best to THE STEELERS
@@christoforosrountis1976 As you say "defense meant everything" and the Raiders offensive line pushed the Steel Curtain all over the place this day. Stabler only attempted 16 passes in whole game. If you listen to the announcers, they even repeatedly say that the Steeler defense couldn't stop the Raiders. In addition to Oakland's 24 points, the Raiders even missed a short field goal and turned the ball over on downs twice in the 4th quarter inside the Steeler 25 so they had the opportunity to run up the score had the game not been essentially noncompetitive by the 3rd quarter. I note in this video that note is made that Harris and Blier were injured, That is fair. However, you did not note that on game 1 of this season that the Raiders had to go to a 3-4 defense from a 4-3 due to pre season injuries and still beat the Steelers. However, massive respect to the Steelers
That 3-4 defense caused the Vikings fits in the Super Bowl, as that was the first team that they had played using the 3-4.

You know you have a good team if you take a punter in the first round.
No doubt - not many, if any, weaknesses on that team.
This was when real football was played.
Right on!
Steelers had the last laugh though. They’re still in Pittsburgh.
@@dethray1000 Most of those guys played while injured. The team doctor probably said that it was safe to play. What else is he going to say? He's paid by the team
@@dethray1000 I agree. I've posted elsewhere that the old style was more or less doomed. Nobody knew about the CTE stuff at first . . Man, is that sickening or what? Junior Seau . . John Mackey . . Mike Webster . . Dave Duerson . . just awful.
Actually, the Raiders beat the Steelers in 1973's divisional round. It just wasn't en route to a Super Bowl.
@@markgardner9460 agreed. I saw things in the stands at Raiders games....again, colorful.😄
Don't forget, both Harris and Blier didn't play because of injuries. They both had over 1000yrds in the season.
That's right. That information was disclosed in the video, but it still must be emphasized how important it was for the Steelers to be missing that awesome tandem at running back.
@SportsStatsNGab Yes sir. I commented before the video was complete!👍🏾

No Franco. No bleier vs raiders. 76 steelers was the best steeler team of the 70s
I agree.....and a lot of fans and Steelers players agree, too. That defense was the best of all-time for a single season.
If only Franco and Rocky could have suited up on defense this day as the Raiders ran all over the Steelers......Stabler only needed to pass 16 times on the day....
@1:40 I use to remember how accurate Stabler was to be left handed
He threw a picture perfect pass that was easy to catch.
Weird to hear Curt Gowdy (NBC) and Don Meredith calling the game. I guess Dandy Don had left MNF.
Yes, he left MNF for 3 years, but then returned in '77

The Raiders secondary always knew the only way they could stop Lynn Swann was to cheap shot him after the play was over.
Not only the Raiders but the Browns issued many cheap shots to Swann, I'd never miss a Steelers Browns game when televised twice a year.
Franco Harris and Rocky Bleier were injured for the AFC Championship Game Steelers never really had a chance Raiders won 24-7
go Steelers
If it wasn't for key injuries the Steelers coulda won 6 in a row.
Great game love Raiders but Steelers had just won 2 super bowls in a row time wasn't on their side
Nobody was stopping the Raiders in '76. They were a finely tuned machine.
The 76 Raiders team might be the greatest of all time. They would have beaten the 72 Dolphins
'74 team did not have Hendricks. Stabler's best year was '76, as was Branch and Casper.
The NFL was real then.
Players would cry for a personal foul every play
No Franco, No Blier, Raiders only won because the Steelers Run Game was crippled. Steelers had no ball Possession and that Great Defense just wore Down
Raiders had one of the best teams in NFL history in '76 and Snake Stabler had a year for the ages.
Pathetic excuses from a pathetic person I see
I think Earnest Byner and Kevin Mack did it with Cleveland 1,000yds

The Raiders got an uncharacteristically B.S. call in their favor during the game against New England. They don't convert on 4th down. Game over.
