    This must be, like, the oldest SCA fighting video on TH-cam, and still going strong!

    I'm glad no one has done this at my local practice, I would be in every "what not to do" frame. I can't help that I block with my head instead of the buckler. The buckler costs more, I need to keep it looking good.

  • @SirCorby
    @SirCorby  17 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    Shields are, in fact, so useful as weapons that in full speed full contact SCA fighting, they can't be struck with safely. So we don't strike with them. It's against the rules.

    Greetings,
    I am from the Barony of Three Rivers in Calontir and Sir Hiram is one of my best friends. To see him in the two opening scenes was surprising and hilarious! I will have to try to figure out how to send him a link. I'm sure he will "love" it.

    Cool video and I'm also highly impressed with your MASTERFULL put-downs for the trolls! I've LARPed once in my life and even from that, I can testify that if foam weapons hurt, rattan must hurt a hell of a lot more, even with armour.
    Just wish I could get involved in the SCA. Sadly, living in England, there's not many groups around. The closest's in Basingstoke... Dammit, why do Americans get all the coolest geek stuff? (Pretty sure that's an oxymoron, but still...)

    What a fun video. It was extra fun to see Almalric, the current King of AnTir. He sometimes comes to my Barony's local fight practice. He'll be stepping down at 12th night.

  • @SirCorby
    @SirCorby  16 ปีที่แล้ว

    The guy in the white belt is Duke Amalric, yes now of An Tir. He lived in Atlantia for quite a while. The other is Aethelwolf, and I'm sure he has never been in An Tir for any reasonable amount of time.

    If you look closely at the remaining information, it is clear that the knights and professional soldiers of the medieval period were in fact professional and skilled. Their traditions have mostly been lost, but that's part of what we are rediscovering. Manuals like I.33 for sword and buckler, or Joie de Hache for poleaxe work show there were systems for fighting in the west, in armor. Not just bashing with main strength.

  • @Saturnice01
    @Saturnice01 11 ปีที่แล้ว

    Well, I don't know if you've had a response after all this time, or even still need an answer, but in the SCA most of our work (at least where I am), we use the base technique called "The Bellatrix Snap". It generates force from multiple areas of the body, including the arm, and is meant to generate enough force to penetrate armor, but still move fast enough to be practical.

    'Only one guy is supposed to fall down' more like "No Head Bashing" that guy charged and drove his helmet into the other fighter's shield. Shields are bigger

  • @SirCorby
    @SirCorby  18 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Clearly, your extreme distance from Pennsic is what has kept you from being legends at that event. Or that this year would be the first that you'd be old enough to fight at it.
    I don't talk trash. That's probably why I'm so interested in seeing some proof of your skill. Every newly authorized fighter I've ever seen, regardless of age, has been more or less a single shot kill for the experienced. So seeing your skill level will be a revelation.

  • @thelordwraithe
    @thelordwraithe 15 ปีที่แล้ว

    @JVRottweil Actually wearing plastic doesn't help you win. It's a honor-based contest, so the armor really is just there for protection and appearance. I used to have a set of Kydex™ leg armor that I stopped wearing because it worked too well.
    OTOH, there are plenty of top heavy fighters who wear minimal armor because they can move faster.

  • @WatofSarum
    @WatofSarum 15 ปีที่แล้ว

    Sir Corby,
    Just watched the video again. Good clean wholesome fun. Thank you.
    To all the viewers, Try it out, it is huge fun. I think every person who suits up discovers that fighting an unwilling and actively resisting opponent is far more difficult than you imagined - and more fun too! Remember the lessons learned by MMA competitors, those combat arts which aren't being practiced with realistic training scenarios are not practical when faced by aggressive battle hardened opponents.

  • @SirCorby
    @SirCorby  16 ปีที่แล้ว

    There are oafs in every art. You do not see aimless swinging in this video, and this is a BLOOPER reel. I also note that when moderately skilled SCA guys go and play in other WMA stuff, they usually rise to the top of the competition pretty quickly. Full speed training has its powerful benefits.

  • @Saturnice01
    @Saturnice01 12 ปีที่แล้ว

    I'd also like to add that wearing plate armor (like me) reduces your flexibility, and makes the wearer very top-heavy. I am a new fighter, and often find myself being pushed over by body stabs.

    @Patrickthedutch For the most part, no. the fighting looks medieval"ish" but its a mix of many things and some purely SCA. The fighting has become sportlike and grew into its own thing. All in all, really damn fun though. there are rules but its all borne out of safety. Its not about re-enacting , its about having fun in a medieval like atmosphere.

  • @1982patriot

    Yeesh....alot of bashing in the comments. SCA combat is fun. I'm so bored with people who look at anything other people are doing and go...."whatever is way more EXTREME! What your doing is lame cause I'm so EXTREME!".......chiiiill. 's fun...give it a shot you might like it.

    @SirCorby I study Italian longsword, and don't do SCA heavy combat. What the SCA guys do may not be 'historical', but I have seen some SCA guys with real skill, and they have more than once given a good spanking to overconfident martial artists from other traditions, Getting past that damned shield is a bitch!

  • @BrigitofBergental
    @BrigitofBergental 18 ปีที่แล้ว

    Dukex3, please do be sure to "help" bludbathmcgrath understand the reinforced honor system the SCA uses. I'm sure from the "Tale of Chivalry" I found about you online, that you will be gentler in the teaching than others would choose to be. I myself do not fight, but greatly respect the effort SCA fighters put into learning to fight and the skills it takes to do it well.

    So that everyone will be able to find each other to arrange this demonstration at Border Raids, may I suggest that Dukex3 (Palymar) and bludbathmcgrath ("William Tolliver") post links here to pictures of themselves, preferably in the heraldic display they'll use at Border Raids?
    I'd hate for you guys to miss each other!

  • @SirCorby
    @SirCorby  18 ปีที่แล้ว

    But by all means, if you're suggesting that the way we fight is in some way "wimpy", then please do be sure to mention this at any SCA fighting event you happen to attend. Be sure to tell this to everyone you face in the list that day, and if you aren't yet authorized to fight in the SCA, (which I imagine is the case) then certainly explain this to the person who volunteers to fight your authorization bout.

    And pray tell, who is "WE" and could you post some video of your methods for fighting FULL speed FULL contact with it, as the ability to do so without causing serious injury, especially while wearing only "light leathers" is the sort of skill that should be demonstrated to the world.

    Great fun watching it, these guys really go for it. But the footwork is lousy. First thing you learn: never be unbalanced, never make a too large swing, the opponent might get in behind your swing.
    But again: looks like a real hoot. Well done.

    Full speed and contact certainly does have importance, as does realistic/accurate technique and form. To answer your question, yes, WMA students certainly do both, at least in the school I attend. What we don't do is worry about politics, whose outfit looks better, what "title" we hold, etc.
    The one SCA event I've seen had one recurring element - members whining about how their opponents hit too hard. I've been hit hard more than once. WMA students aren't known for whining.

    Ducking is terrible in ANY situation. You expose your lower back and your neck. You also can't see where you are striking or going. The enemy can easily just bash you down or block your attacks with a shield and thrust his sword into your spine and bam, you're dead.

    @AlekseiGriffin I've seen some russian WMA or whatever. While I admire their bravery, toughness and power, I've yet to see anything that looked like more than flailing, grabbing people by the neck and throwing them down.
    As for "light taps" I'll call bullshit. People get hurt when they get hit full speed on unarmored spots, and that's with a weapon that transfers an order of magnitude less force than the weird basket hilted machete looking things I saw in a recent video of a russian competition

    @SirCorby  18 ปีที่แล้ว

    First on the "no skill" and "they suck" theme: Did you happen to notice this is a blooper movie? Most of the fighters here are now quite skilled.
    As for out of shape: I'm 6'3", 195 lbs with a 38" waist. Oh, and I'm 46 years old. How about you? I'll guess 5'11", 255, 44" waist, 25 yrs. Am I close?
    Further, f I understand you correctly, you're saying that everyone who fights with a different set of rules from yours is a wimp? Is that reasonable? How about Kendo? Escrima? Kickboxers?

    In western europe ofcourse :D but we wear full armor platings and good shields the Czech blacksmiths are the best... and quite expensive but it's worth it.

  • @eendenmannetje
    @eendenmannetje 12 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hm.. Talking from a european swordfighter's (training from lichtenauer's techniques) I'm really interested in how these techniques work. They seem somewhat odd to me.
    Is it just a new kind of sport, or do you use different techniques?
    Just being curious, would love to join in on an sca-battle when I'm back in the states :)

    • @NewYorkKnightsCombat1
      @NewYorkKnightsCombat1 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Because this sport was developed before the popularization of historical techniques with HEMA etc, a lot of the techniques were developed by trial-and-error or adaption of other martial arts and principles of physics and ergonomics. AS such drastically different styles were developed all over the world. There are regional styles and those favored by certain households. Since there are no weight or size classes or restrictions, different body types can be matched against each other, with differing styles and techniques that serve each type.
      If you search TH-cam for things like "sca fighting technique" you chould find bunches of videos that eplain the techniques people use.
      BTW, there are SCA groups in Europe. go to www.sca.org" and look for the link to "find local group."
