Epicurus’s theory is insanely impressive even with hindsight knowing how primitive their resources were, if you asked me I would’ve guessed that theory was from the 1800s
It's pretty similar to both Buddhisim and the jewish Ecclesiastes. Humanity developed it independently at least three times for it to turn out to be kind of right, which is cool. On atoms, it wasn't his theory (it was even earlier, by Leucippus) but he was a supporter.
The part you're talking about was neither unique nor novel. Epicurus was a very late Greek philosopher, and atomism predates even Socrates with Leucippus. From Plato to Aristotle most philosophical discussion of physics and metaphysics became concerned with topics like matter, form and essence rather than the composition of matter, but before Socrates/Plato and after Aristotle the discussion was largely between atomists (who believed in indivisible units of matter so small they could not be seen, that comprised everything in the universe and gave rise to the senses) and material monadists (who believed in infinitely divisible substances that interacted via waves in a kind of endless gridlock, often paired with the belief that there could be no such thing as a true void for reasons beyond the scope of a mid-length TH-cam comment). It's worth noting that atomism and monadism are generally simultaneously accepted by the empirical natural philosophers (ie "scientists") of today: There are apparent particles, some of which are even still considered indivisible, that have a finite number of stable states in which they comprise matter and energy, and there are waves in a monadic field or membrane that actually give rise to those apparent particles. None of that actually vindicates or denounces the ancients; They were operating within the best science of their time and came to different conclusions for straightforward and sensible reasons. It is a fun quirk of the history of philosophy that, for example, the Stoics and Epicureans were philosophical "enemies," often even ridiculing each other publicly, despite their ethics and definitions of a good life appearing extremely similar to a layperson, but that because philosophy was a much broader term concerning not only topics like ethics, meaning and metaphysics but also physics, Stoics were generally monadists while Epicureans were generally atomists, and this was one of the topics over which they would go at each other's throats in discourse.
No it's not. If you bother to really inform about it, you realize that it has except on some details pretty much nothing to do with our modern knowledge. And as you can expect for that time, it's just a bullshit model based on nothing. And when we say that Epicure was empiricist, it's also misleading, like just he said that knowledge comes from sense which fits the strict definition of empiricism but nothing about a empiricist method to get good knowledge like we do today. The true basis of that comes from Aristotle and his Lyceum, which made the best models of their time for pretty much everything that could be studied.
When I first read Epicurus’ essays, I felt like I was grading a high schooler’s homework on particle physics. Initially was like well yeah duh, of course atoms work like that (mostly). I had to physically pause and digest that this man wrote these words around 2000 years ago. That’s when the penny dropped and my mind was truly blown.
The idea of the atom was much older though, it already appeared centuries before Epicurus. Although I am an Epicurean myself, in all fairness it must be said that Epicurus just expanded on the ideas of those before him.

You forgot Hedon, which gave us the philosophy of hedonism, which contradicted the "virtuous" and "objectivist" philosophies and instead stated that individual subjective happiness was the ultimate purpose in life. And even if you consider him a minor philosopher (which I would strongly disagree with, considering his philosophy is very much alive even today), you should have mentioned that Epicurus was a pupil of Hedon and part of his philosophy was about tempering the "YOLO" attitude of hedonists and create a more sustainable pursuit of happiness.
Even if any of this bullshit were true, the reason hedonism is so popular today is largely because hedonism is caused by the failure to live a virtuous and meager life. People don't subscribe to hedonism as a philosophy, they simply participate in it because being virtuous is difficult. It's like saying being unhealthy is a philosophy; no one actively desires to be unhealthy, they just make shitty choices that result in being unhealthy.
First, I would like to say how happy it makes me to see people react so well to Epicurus. I've been interested in true philosophy since last year, and time and again I find myself going back to the Doctrines and to the correct view of phenomena that happen all around us every day. My path to _ataraxia_ is not easy, but reading the positive feedback here sure is heartwarming. Just to add, but I agree with many here that this video is fantastic, and would love to see more content made in this format. A part 2 for philosophy would be nice, if you can.
Universities now: "Here's an interpretive dance about how whiteness contributes to climate change." Universities then: "Here's two sticks. Figure out the size of the Earth."
What I learned: I don't wanna talk about plato, aristotle and pythagoras. There is a cycle among epicurus, diogenes, socrates, which I call "purpose of life" cycle. Epicurus believes the purpose of life must be "to make people happy and remove their pain and fear". Diogenes describes happiness as" not pursuing money, power, and fame but to pursue virtue". I don't like his definitin of virtue. Here, Socrates defines virtue as" wisdom, courage, justice, piety, ... combining all into one, and that is knowledge". And the better person is the one with more knowledge. But this cycle lacks in the end and it completes when we go back to Epicurus definiton of the "purpose of life".
LITERALLY last night while I was showering I was thinking to myself "man I would love it if this man would talk about the greek philosophers, because i would like to know about them and hes my favourite channel right now". yo I totally forgot about that game because my laptop couldn't really handle it but now that I have a pc I should totally play again

I’m taking a philosophy class right now and this was sooo helpful thank you!
So Epicurus was science and Pythagoras was my math teacher
Plato’s theories sound weird at first but they have a unique ability to teach you how to abstract a deeper reality from what you perceive
Empiricus is the original G apparently. Blud solved the universe.
Thanks for you. I am glad i can review all this info with your videos
Do you have a source for this? I can find no information anywhere about a figure named “hedon”.
This is completely false. “Hedon” is the Greek word for pleasure.
We gotta get a video on all religions next 🔥
Woooh epicurus just did the quantum stuffs there .....holy shii!!!
Quantum theory is much different than Epicurean ideas. But were required of physics to make more sense of what atomist could not.
Glad your channel is doing so well, good luck!

Love your channel! ♥️ Thank you so much for these videos 🙏
This is a very good video the explains such a complex topic in such a short amount of time
I like children
First, I would like to say how happy it makes me to see people react so well to Epicurus. I've been interested in true philosophy since last year, and time and again I find myself going back to the Doctrines and to the correct view of phenomena that happen all around us every day. My path to _ataraxia_ is not easy, but reading the positive feedback here sure is heartwarming.
Just to add, but I agree with many here that this video is fantastic, and would love to see more content made in this format. A part 2 for philosophy would be nice, if you can.
Universities now: "Here's an interpretive dance about how whiteness contributes to climate change."
Universities then: "Here's two sticks. Figure out the size of the Earth."
i saw this video when it was first uploaded but forgot to comment. Great video, kudos to you and much support!
I love your way of explaining things
bro keep posting this is amazinf
Loving the content! Thank you so much!
What I learned:
I don't wanna talk about plato, aristotle and pythagoras.
These are such good videos, I hope you're getting money from the ads I intentionally watch
This content is actually really good!
I love you Paint Explainer man
What's really crazy is just how close and yet so far all philosophers of that age were
I would love to see more videos. keep going my friend!
epicurus was ahead of his fucking time, how did he come to that conclusion oh my…
I can see myself coming back to this channel over and over again
LITERALLY last night while I was showering I was thinking to myself "man I would love it if this man would talk about the greek philosophers, because i would like to know about them and hes my favourite channel right now". Like, man i'm shocked. Too bad I didn't wish for a billion dollars or something thanks for the vid

FLY PERFECT WINGS
This is the new only way i can learn about complex things dont stop making these
wow I saw your first video a couple hours after it came out a few weeks ago and here I am again and you have 100k subs and like 4 new videos?! time to subscribe for sure!
I was vibing heavy with Diogenes until that last part but i was brought back with that wonderful line - “i am a citizen of the world” 😂
Epicurus is one of my favorite Greek philosophers. this video only scratches the surface of his very interesting and unique way of viewing life, death, religion, and knowledge.
it's also worth mentioning that Epicurus is not the one to come up with the idea of atoms, which were thought before him by a different philosopher, but only improved upon an existing theory.
These were tier 1 philosophers. I am now waiting for the tier 2, numbering Anaxagoras.
4:03 did he kinda predict wave lengths? Cause we perceive objects the color they are not because it's their color itself, but because they emit such a wave that corresponds to that precise color for our eye.
Which might explain why insects like bees see colors differently from us
just found this channel and i'm really impressed with how easy to understand it is, i'm looking forward to watching you grow!
most underrated youtuber
he's not underrated, he's just recently started and is doing really well for when he's started, he's gonna be a massive creator one day and is definitely on track to it rn
Diogenes was, and still is, my favorite Ancient Greece philosopher, the dude was just the greatest Badass of his time
Damn your channel grew so fast
everybody in this comment section is so impressed by epicurus to the point that the other ones are almost forgotten. (his theories are really impressive though, especially for their time)
Socrates asked the questions, Plato gave us the shadows, Aristotle said it's all inside, Epicurus told us to chill, and Diogenes lived shamelessly. OG philosophers dropping wisdom!
im looking forward to more philosopher descriptions. particularly looking forward to the skeptics like Pyrrho, Stories about him make me laugh
Informative and well presented. Your Sir are a Gentleman and a Scholar. :)
Great video! You should definitely make a part 2!
Very helpful for my upcoming philosophy class
Bro is about to be my favorite TH-cam teacher

Definitely make another philosophy one! Try different waves of philosophy from different eras and places!
love how you just start off the video without any intro or anything lol!
