The Greatest Show On Earth is pretty much the ultimate Nightwish song. That "We were here" chant with over 23 000 people singing along with the band gets me every time.
It was Epic live. I was There. Still have it on Blu-ray and it is almost as awesome every time :)
Damn. I can imagine how amazing that whole show was.
I've called it the pinnacle of human evolution as far as music is concerned. And I was not satiric or metaphoric or exaggerating or anything of that sort.
One of the best thing ever happened in my life: screaming WE WERE HERE together with about 15.000 people I never met before. Amazing
Some of us were there. Few meters from the stage. Last song, with the fireworks - was pretty amazing.
And again last Fall they were kind enough to save the last gigs of their world/Europe tour for their fellow countrymen, sold out of course, but great.
The Greatest Show on Earth is about the history of Earth and life itself. It has 5 sections:
1. Four Point Six (ends with the first spoken part by Richard Dawkins) - Earth as an empty planet, all rocks, lava etc. and the first life, the title refers to the estimated age of Earth, 4.6 billion years.
2. Life (begins when the guitars kick in, ends with the break after the drum solo) - evolution and life, references to LUCA (Last Universal Common Ancestor), the Devonian era (also known as the Age of Fish, when amphibians started evolving to go on land), the Goldilock Zone (the ideal distance from the Sun, which allows water to exist in a liquid state) etc.
3. The Toolmaker (starts with Floor's high notes and the primate grunting, ends with the "We were here" segment) - humans enter the stage, references to Lucy (the primate that seems to be our earliest ancestor), migration out of Africa, atomic bombs etc. and there are musical snippets from other musicians and composers, such as Bach, Mozart and Metallica (just before the second chorus you can hear the riff from Enter Sandman)
4. The Understanding (the two spoken parts during the outro of the show) - quotes by UNWEAVING THE RAINBOW by Richard Dawkins and ON THE ORIGIN OF THE SPECIES by Charles Darwin, narrated by Dawkins.
5. Sea Worn Driftwood - not that present here, but it is the soundscape after the last spoken part, with animal and ocean sounds to play it out.

The periodic table of elements does look like a sort of patchwork tapestry, but this can go further. The historical function of tapestries was as "nomadic murals," pictographical histories which moving people could pack up and revisit wherever they went. The "writing in the garden," in nature, is not only the stone murals left by dead animals in the form of fossils, but is also this chemical writing that encodes the relatively nomadic DNA molecule with the instructions for life. This is the natural conclusion to draw from the fact that life shares common origin, that all life is built with the same blocks, and that all life on Earth is interdependent (gaia hypothesis). The multiplicity of beings on Earth are one, just as the cells in a body are one.

The Devonian geologic time period marked the first significant, rapid diversification of life (and the more well-known Cambrian explosion is another of these 'adaptive radiation' events). The word "scion" refers to a shoot of a plant cut for grafting, and is also used to denote a descendent of a notable family. Both meanings apply.

Evolutionary adaptation is written in the DNA and as fossils in the rocks, and is ongoing. Species die, diversifiy and delineate. Every day is different, every day something changes.
"Ion channels welcoming the outside world To the stuff of stars"
Ion channels are found in the membranes of all cells, controlling the flow of energy through the cells. The stuff of stars is all the physical matter we're made of. So it's the ion channels, guiding enery, which allow living bodies to interact with the rest of the world by exchanging energy with it. "Stuff of stars" is surely a Sagan reference: "The nitrogen in our DNA, the calcium in our teeth, the iron in our blood, the carbon in our apple pies were made in the interiors of collapsing stars. The bed of a tree is the nutrient-rich soil from which it grows, a soil made of dead things. The "tree of a biological holy" is probably the tree of life (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tree_of_life). This line refers to the "holy" legendary tree of everlasting life but also means the conceptual, branching family tree of all life, whose bed consists of all deceased beings (in a more literal sense), or all extinct ancestral species (in a more abstract sense). This is thematically linked with the song "Alpenglow."

"We" could be human beings tasked with acting as nature's stewards, garden of eden style, but that's not chronological -- human beings haven't quite appeared in the song yet. "We" could instead be all of life itself, in a gaia-philosophy sense, which posits that life creates environments ever more hospitable to more life. Every single one of a given person's ancestors, male and female, lived past puberty at least. But "fathers" evokes "forefathers," which has a nicer storytelling ring to it than "parents."

Handymen are good with tools; travelers posessing hands rather than forefeet walk upright. Hominids originated in Africa and spread to the rest of the world from there. The brain grows, consciousness and creativity along with it. Atavism is the tendency to revert to ancestral type, an evolutionary throwback. Fight-or-flight instincts that helped human ancestors survive have now been creatively projected onto the world to both explain it (origins, meaning, suffering) and gain security in it (bargaining through sacrifice). Nomadic people develop agriculture and settle down into civilizations. The word "architecture" is at once both literal and figurative. Shiny rocks are wealth: gold, precious stones, jewels, and later uranium which leads to the nuclear arms race. The golden rule -- "Do unto others as you would have them do unto you" -- is a coin with a dark side: "an eye for an eye," revenge. This ensures the "MAD"ness of mutually assured destruction. "Enter history, the grand finale. Enter ratkind."
"Ratkind" comes from Richard Dawkins' book "The Ancestor's Tale." Dawkins imagines a post-apocalyptic world in which rodents feast on the remnants of humanity (and humanity's garbage). The rat population explodes, and then as they exhaust these resources they turn on one another for food. As a consequence of natural selection, the rats diverge into new carnivorous and herbivorous species, and perhaps, eventually, a specices of rodent whose intelligence rivals that of humans. Floor brought a new spirit to this band, and therefore affected Tuomas' mastery. This IS the BEST song from Nightwish ever. Period.
i feel nightwish helped her too. I have no idea why but i have listened to other songs of hers in the past before nightwish and i just did not FEEL it. Not that I did not like it but I did not get THAT feeling when she sang before. It's like she made a deal with a crossroads demon or something haha just exploded with potential after joining nightwish.

Nothing will ever win the feeling when you scream as loud as you can "we were here" with 15 000 people. Tears fell down my cheeks and I have never been that happy, there is no other band who can touch my feelings the way Nightwish does. Just pure love.

Watching you react to this EPIC piece of artistry has me seeing and hearing it through brand new eyes. I totally understand how overwhelming it can be, but wow! I remember first hearing it through my headphones, then seeing it live. If I had to describe "The Greatest Show on Earth", I'd have to say that it was the most epic and coolest science documentary ever made, lol. I pre-ordered Endless Forms Most Beautiful (after being absolutely blown away by videos of Floor at Wacken, much like everyone else), but it took a while for my copy to arrive.

Your enthusiasm is contagious! Your enjoyment of the show is so sincere it made me smile. Nightwish is really unique. Sure there are other great bands in the genre but I think none has been able to deliver such a presentation. Great reaction!
Listening to Nightwish and get goosepumps is normal effect so don't worry. I was there in that concert and i didn't get my goosepumps down for a week. I think i still have them.
This song is a resume of all that is Nightwish, of all it is capable to do. It is not a song, it is an experience that overwhelms you.

So... when i first got this song on the album, it just stayed on loop for about 2 days, even with how good the other songs on there were. We were here, when that final tempo change kicks in... every single time, goosebumps like you say. Great review karl, about time you got to this one! Just sit back for a few minutes and try to imagine the talent and genius it takes to sit down and write and compose this song. It just frazzles my brain to try and get my head around being able to put this together. He is the modern day mozart, I hope people appreciate Tuomas as a composer in a few hundred years time because he is simply the best we have alive today.

Wacken 2013 cemented Floor's legacy with Nightwish. Live at Tempere showed she "owned" Nightwish. Cannot stop listening to her singing...it's like crack.
I went to see Nightwish at Bloodstock last month with some family from the UK, and along tagged my little cousin. She's 7, and aspires to headbang like Floor. She tries to input herself in all of the adult conversations that goes on around her, and she often picks up a joke now and then, and normally the context is so lost on her (which is what usually makes it funny), however. For years, friends and family have made fun of the 5 gum commercial. It's often quite stupid and slap stick. The night before we set out to attend Bloodstock, we were watching some Nightwish videos, and my little cousin hadn't yet heard TGSOE. So we pull up this video and we watch it, and her little eyes are sO BIG, and she's so fixated, that by the end, she lets out this barely audible "so this is what it feels like to chew 5 gum", which is still the most hilarious thing to me and now every time I see this performance or hear this song, it's the only thing I can think of. 😂 It's so appropriate, too. This song takes you on a journey and it's fuckin' bone chilling. Goosebumps all over!

I know many female vocalists, most of them good, many of them great, some of them absolutely amazing, but none can touch Floor, in my opinion~
She can do almost everything. She has a rock voice, strong head voice, strong chest voice, amazing falsetto all the while maintaining absolute control and projecting great power.

I've seen this in concert twice, and it is beyond words. At the last concert, they ended the concert with this song, followed by Ghost Love Score, and people had tears pouring down their faces
Then you must have seen it in the decades tour? I was sad that they chopped off so much of the song, even more than at tampere compared to the album version. Now, they don't even play the Archean horizon... Part...
Well they did the "We Were Here" bit, then did Ghost Love Score, then played the rest of the track after Ghost Love Score. When I saw them with Sonata Arctica and Delain on the Endless Forms tour, they did the whole thing in one iece.

The first time I heard this song, I was leaving uni and going nowhere in particular. I played that song while waiting for the metro. I shouldn't have done that.
The metro ride became an interstellar ride. I saw the big bang when the piano left with a big explosive sound. I saw star and nebulas, gass clouds, planets... The metro window was a spaceship window. It was crazy! I don't do drugs, I don't do anything like that. I got a bit scared for what was happening.
When the bagpipes started I had to get off the metro cause I didn't even know where I was anymore. Dawkings starts speaking, I start going upstairs.
When the guitar kicked in I found myself at the city park... Nope. I was in "the garden of dinosaurs!" Like what the actual hell?! And I was such an idiot not to take the earphones off. No, the music kept playing and I went through such a journey with that song.
When the "Toolmaker" section started (which I had no clue it was called toolmaker), I found myself at the feet of Heroes Square, a monument in honour of the origins ofthe Hungarian people. The lyrics fused with everything that I saw around me. I was already frightened at the synchronicity of it all. But I couldn't take off my earphones cause I was too much of an idiot.
When they started singing "we were here" I was done, so to speak. I ran inside the park again and into the small castle landmark. There's a statue of an anonymous poet, which has always been my comfort spot. So I ran for it. Meanwhile I was "seeing" everything tumble down around me, while at the same time it all looked normal, it's hard to explain.
When I finally reached the statue, the voice of Richard Dawkings began again, as if it were the statue speaking to me. "We are going to die, and that makes us the lucky ones." I lost it. I began to cry. But because the statue is so touristy, and it was like 3 in the afternoon, I went behind a bush next to the statute and cried there, and the song was still playing! I know, I am a fucking idiot. That big and epic instrumental break after he speaks, that was the first time I made a photo as "Blind Photographer - Budapest" and yes, I am really partially blind. My vision is too crappy so I am legally categorised as blind. Still, that was my first photo under this name I have.
During the outro of the song, with all those whale sounds and animals and such, I was at the back of the statue, crying some more and trying to relax. I had goosebumps all over like you during this video.
I am a sensitive creature with a very strong imagination, but nothing like that had ever happened to me while listening to a song. Never.
This song really made me much more appreciative of life as a whole. Hands down, one of the most beautiful experiences I ever had.

I have seen other people react to this song. Yours was fantastic. Just not being able to speak says it all. This truly is a masterpiece. I love how it is about the universe how we evolved. This song makes you feel like you are a part of something big. Especially the part "We Were Here". One of my favorite parts are when they come back on stage.That music and Richard Dawkins speaking is so beautiful and full of emotion. I find a lot of people do not realize that is part of the song.
I know some people want you to go mainstream music. I think you will short change yourself and your subs if you limit yourself. There is so much music out there to hear and share.

I love how passionate you are about music. Keep up the good work and all The best for you. This is one of my favorite Nightwish songs and it makes me very emotional. I'm a classical singer myself, but I also love metal. For me music must be filled with extreme emotions and talent. I have found Opera at very young age because my mother is an operasinger (as I aspire to Be) but metal is my other passion. My husband is a deathmetal composer/ player but still likes Nightwish and has seen them many times with me. Greetings from Finland :)
The song is truly epic. "We were hear" takes me back to seeing them earlier this year for the first time as that is how the show ended. If you ever get a chance to see them live you absolutely must see them. They played for 2 hours but I could have listened to them all night.

Probably the best reaction to nightwish I've seen. You need to look up the lyrics of the song. It about the development and evolution of the earth. It talking about how humans are just a small blip on the history of the universe.
Last line of the song, "we were here" is a testament to the fact that we are the very few that were ever born. And it is a miracle that we are who we are. Because one simple sperm cell different that got to the egg first woul drastically change who we are. We won the lottery of birth

Crap! I didn't know that when I commented, but I've watched all your NW videos....This is still the best one though, and I've showed my friends. :-) They're slowly getting into the band. Definitely try Savatage - Commissar, Morphine Child, Wake of Magellan, or Hourglass. They're the male vox comparison to Nightwish. Lost of people recommend their older stuff, which is completely different and dated. Keep it up man!

It's OK to be overwhelmed by this masterpiece, I'm glad you don't only enjoy Floor's voice, but all of the package. But yeah, Floor is outstanding! Marco and Troy are great singers too and their three voices match perfectly. I also admire Kai's stamina and concentration, it's such a long and varied song, after already 1:45 h of concert. Haha yea my dog has a pretty good music taste so i think he would definitely enjoy this song. Haha unfortunately nagging doesnt really help. The songs come when they do and there is no way i can speed up the process because i cant do more than one video per day. But those songs are on the list and will be out.:)
