  • Summertime is an aria composed by George Gershwin for the 1935 opera Porgy and Bess. The lyrics are by DuBose and Dorothy Heyward, and Ira Gershwin. The song soon became a popular jazz standard.
Clara: Paula Ingram(sung by Harolyn Blackwell)
The London Philharmonic conducted by Sir Simon Rattle
    The Glyndebourne Chorus
    ..........................................................................................................
    Summertime,
    And the livin' is easy
    Fish are jumpin'
    And the cotton is high
    Your daddy's rich
    And your mamma's good lookin'
    So hush little baby
    Don't you cry
    One of these mornings
You're going to rise up singing
    Then you'll spread your wings
And you'll take to the sky
    But till that morning
    There's a'nothing can harm you
With daddy and mamma standing by

My mama would sing 'Summertime' to me, when I was an infant in the late 50's. It is one of my earliest memories. I have chosen this version as a piece of music to be played at my funeral, which my family and I are currently planning - it seems that minor problems with my gallbladder have turned out to be advanced liver cancer. I do not know about how much time I have, but I do know that only love has meaning. Peace. Ben.

+Eric Tyra , might you be mistaken as to who dubbed the voice? I found this (not that everything on the internet is correct). "The film's renditions of "Summertime" by Loulie Jean Norman (dubbing Diahann Carroll) and Adele Addison (dubbing Dorothy Dandridge) have placed at #52 in the AFI's (American Film Institute) list of the 100 Best Movie Songs of All Time."

Ignore the 590 people who decided not to like this, they are clueless. This soprano is a dream, and it is actually suppose to be sung like this she is rocking a baby to sleep not screaming like so many other sopranos do with this aria. You have no clue how much control it takes to sing with such resonance, and pianissimo. Then she starts bringing more volume later is the piece, it's called musical phrasing and acting, she was brilliant.

Piss off with your snobbery. People are allowed to like whatever they like. This might be how it's meant to be but many people prefer the less operatic versions of the song particularly as the character is black and opera is not a sound associated with black culture or a character of this time period. I have every clue what it takes to sing like this having sung opera and trained in opera singing at stage school, that doesn't mean I have to like it.

I agree! I don’t know how anyone could say anything negative about this performance. This is exactly how this song should be sung, stylistically and technically. I listened to several other recordings before finding this one, and none of them captured the mood that I was looking for and this is absolutely perfect. Exactly how I hear this song in my head.

Gershwin's Porgy and Bess is every bit as valid an opera as anything Mozart, Rossini, Bellini, Donizetti, Wagner, Verdi, or Puccini wrote. It's music is lush, it's emotions powerful, and it's drama grandly operatic. The San Francisco Opera production is on DVD and it's a powerful and vaulting experience. It was included in our opera season in Chicago and everyone flocked to see it. Twelve grand performances! Don't let anyone kid you. This is a full grand opera, and it deserves the best production and singers possible. And what a way to see how many truly outstanding artists of color we have singing here in the U.S. All of these singers sing Italian and French and German as well. This is just another opera in their vast repertoires. "Porgy and Bess", in the words of Stephen Sondheim, is "a musical gift from heaven".

I agree with your comments, i fell that gershwing has something to say, in his soul , in his own body , in his family' s story. that' s why the result is so expressive, intense, but never vulgar. It' s not so usual in opera, or any way of music, much others stories are often ridiculous and these music ' are made for a typical society, not especialy for humanity. Gershwing seems to compose as Ravel did, in europe, but with much more reality, on earth as it might be in even. his own piano makes me cry so deeply, as noone could do, he was surely a genius, an affective genius. In France where i am living, just a few people can hear and fell his soul, he can express both of the Klezmer identity and jazz actuality of his time...and so much more. It's not strong, it is true, from the begining to the end. With that composer, i feel confident , far away from theatre. Just a respectable man we 'd like to get friend. I also think so with Zoltan Kodaly, another style, another world, by the same faith in life and humanity.
I spent my time in the Paris society of the Eightees, " Salle Pleyel", and was to much desapointed/... With Gershwing, i feel good, at home. without frontiers.
      Christian Guignard, France

I agree and would even go so far to say that Porgy and Bess is a much better opera than many standard operas, which are mostly full of the same love stories and fat ladies like a bollywood musical. This one is unique and portrays the (sad) story of poverty and struggle in African American society at the turn of 19th century.
I think it is one of the greatest and most daring operas every written. And no one can match black singers. Just no one. They are made for classical music. Orchestras denied entry for blacks while Gershwin made an entire opera for them to sing!

Apparently Gershwin was impressed by an old Ukrainian lullaby "Oh, a dream walks about near the windows" [«Ой ходить сон коло вікон»] that bears this melody that he heard in 1929 sung by a choir under the direction of O. Koshitsa [О. Кошиця]. Gershwin finished the opera in 1935.

Why are you saying "listless"? Gershwin took his inspiration for this song from blues and jazz.

    • @alonzogarbanzo
      @alonzogarbanzo 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

I think you mistake my meaning. I’m saying that many lesser musicians down the years have taken GG’s beautiful harmonies, indeed inspired by jazz and blues, and dumbed them down to a three-chord 12-bar with minor chords replacing the majors, losing the unique and mysterious character of his composition. A little better effort on their part to learn his harmonies would remedy that. On the other hand, they have a right to play it any way they choose, and I have a right to find their interpretation as listless, boring, inferior to the original, etc. and share that take, true?

    Just for meee
    Summertime
    And the livin' is easy
    Fish are jumpin'
    And the cotton is high
    Oh, your daddy's rich
And your ma is good lookin'
    So hush, little baby
    Don't you cry
    One of these mornings
You're going to rise up singing
    Then you'll spread your wings
    And you'll take the sky
    But 'til that morning
    There's a'nothing can harm you
With daddy and mammy standing by

For my money no one and I mean no one can beat George and Ira Gershwin for songs. The music was sublime and the lyrics were perfect. What a tragedy that George died
    so young.

What an amazing voice, this is my 80 year old fathers favorite song, this version. One of my favorites too. Saw this musical many times in the 70's and 80's when I was a kid, haven't seen it broadcast in decades which is a real shame. This was the first time African American opera singers were taken seriously.

One of the best pieces of musical art ever written, not many can sing this one it's a heart felt moving piece that the soprano almost destroying her voice after performing musical performances. One musical that deserves a lot more respect. The actress has to be extraordinary talent. And this piece was introduced as a continuing play during the 1939 world's. Fair. George Gershwin knew how to use his work to show case extraordinary gifted artists.he also Knew......he was trying to show the world that certain things aren't to be tolerated. He love people. He loved music and he knew how to make these work together in his style.
