    Legendary kick, those balls back then in the rain would weigh 3/ 4 times heavier than today's balls. This is also legendary due to what I consider the voice of rugby Bill McLaren OBE. He was and still is the voice of rugby. From a proud Welshman.

    This clip just proves that a world class commentator can make a sporting clip just as memorable as the amazing skill itself. Hugely impressive kick from Thorburn, and the real raw and emotional reaction from Bill McLaren watching on, as if he were just a normal fan like the rest of us for those few seconds.

    • @jhfh3112
      @jhfh3112 9 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      A heavier ball would actually help it travel further due to having greater inertia while travelling. If you don't believe me, go outside and try throwing a ping-pong ball and golf ball and see which one goes further. It'll be the heavier ball.

    Golden age of rugby. No pissing around getting the ball teed up, just dig a hole to get it to stand up, then give it some welly. I was lucky enough to go to the 5 Nations matches in the 60s and 70s, when rugby was rugby.

      just cause of that? rugby has evolved... i mean saying that rugby before was better because of what you said is like saying rugby was better because they didn't use a mouthguard! Rugby is better nowadays, just like every other sport. We see stuff that nobody could imagine possible a few years before. Sports will continue to evolve, the standard of todays athletes will be ridiculously low for the players in 10 years

    Takes no time at all to square up to it, throw grass into the air to check the wind, sort his breathing, pray or anything else... Heavy balls, heavy boots, heavy shirts, no tee, no sand... None of the modern things we see now.
    Just puts it down, walks back, sees where it's going & sends it there.
    When Bill McLaren says "WOOF!" after a legend like Thorburn kicks a ball, you KNOW it's amazing.
    (I know... "Just", right?) GREAT rugby moment - Diolch 🙂

    You would find less and less of these kicks these days due to law changes. In the 80's if a side had a long range penalty they could only do one of 2 things 1). Try to hit the penalty from 60 metres - or 2). Run the ball. A side who decided to go for touch would lose possession of the ball and was seen as very unappealing. Today if a side had a penalty from the same distance it would almost certainly attempt to kick into the opposition 22, win the resultant lineout (that it could throw into) and go for a driving maul or other line out variation. You still see long range penalties (notably from Elliott Daly or Frans Steyn) but they are the exception these days.
