  • Defunct Games reviews Killer Frequency, available now on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X, Switch and PC.
    Don’t touch that dial, because one of the year’s best games takes place in the sleepy city of Gallows Creek. Killer Frequency puts you in the shoes of a radio DJ who is forced to help save the townsfolk from a masked serial killer. This is a tense, deadly and oddly comical thriller that shows you the wrath of a slasher from an entirely new point of view. With a smart script, fantastic twists, great characters, top-notch voice acting and a surprising amount of depth to the survival scenarios, this is more than just Halloween: The Radio Play. Killer Frequency gives us a new way to look and interact with true crime fiction, and I cannot recommend it highly enough.

    Thank you for the in-depth review! I have had this game on my wishlist for a while, but I didn't know how it would actually turn out. I was drawn to the ascetic and concept and so I'm glad it delivers. This will definitely be a purchase for me. Thanks again!

    Didn't even watch the video yet but I CANNOT BELIEVE YOU JUST RECOMMENDED PONTYPOOL. I LOVE that movie and I've never met anyone else that has watched it! Awesome!
    Edit: I must get this game.

      I feel exactly the same way, which is why I sing its praises every chance I get. I suspect there's somebody at Team 17 doing exactly the same thing, because this game definitely came about after somebody watched Pontypool. Hell, the pizzeria guy who keeps calling back for free advertisements is named Ponty, which definitely feels like a nod to Pontypool.

    I just started playing this. I was really looking forward to it, but the first 30 minutes or so is kind of off putting. The biggest issues I had was with the writing and voice acting. While the voice acting isn't horrible by any means, it does feel a bit phoned in (pun intended?) during the initial call with the 911 operator and the back-and-forth with Peggy. Also, the "tutorial" at the beginning where Peggy has to teach you to put a record on and adjust the volume? That's just a very lazy tutorial. It's like saying "Hey! Don't forget that you're playing a video game!" It's a minor gripe, sure, and it's a very short aside to the overall game, but to me it shows a lack of creativity which is reflected in some of the initial dialogue of the game.
    I'm going to keep playing though because I love the premise, the style, and the atmosphere so far; I just hope the dialogue and voice acting get a little better. Anyway, glad to hear you loved it! Unique games like this need to get exposure.

      I agree with the tutorial, but enjoyed the voice acting more than you. It could be that I got used to Peggy's enthusiasm and Forrest's always-on radio voice. That said, the tutorial is not great, but also it doesn't need to be. You really won't be using the volume sliders or the sound effect buttons. They are basically just putting you through the basics of being a DJ, something that you'll almost immediately toss out the window when the calls start coming in. About the only thing you need to know is how to change records and insert tapes.

      @@DefunctGames Yeah, the tutorial is a minor quibble overall. It just felt really weird because he was a DJ for years in Chicago and now she's telling him how to play a record? Just not a great way to handle it. I'm going to play through it though, so maybe the voice acting and writing will grow on me as it goes on. I just didn't love it at the start there.

    Well, if the killer is wearing a hockey mask or a William Shatner mask, think I know who it is, same if he's wearing someone's face and using a chainsaw. 😉 But seriously, sounds like an interesting game, may check it out. I see it's on sale right now, which is cool. As for the question, sure I could answer Life is Strange as you are trying to solve a crime, but I answer that a lot, so I'm going to go with a F95 Zone game and answer Welcome to Free Will. Basically, you play a guy who goes with his brother to a small town called Free Will in search for your parents. And while there, find out there is a killer on the lose, so you're not only trying to find your parents, but trying to solve who the killer is. It's one of those, not finished yet, but been enjoying the updates along the way.

    I really like this fame and your great review. I notoced the phone isssue when I was helping moss jazz walk with hwr car and was luke wait, hold up it's 1987? They didn't even have car phones yet and most definitely not cell phones so this is odd 😅. That and the just weord ass tutorial which easily has the worst bot of vloce acting and interaction which gets instantly better afterwards. Some wei4d oices but overall a super cool and refreshing concept. I'm intrigued by your Pontypool recommendation/comparison as a fan of this game and zombies because I've never heard of it. Definitely checking it out asap, Thanks!

    I knew this game would get reviewed on this channel as soon as I seen on eShop. Weird indie game with weird premise that most people would never bother with.

    Pontypool! Baffling how such a good movie came out of the weird book it was based on. Pretty sure this game is better than the book too.
    QOTD, I'd say snatcher if it qualifies.

    First cell phone was invented in 1973.

    • @DefunctGames
      @DefunctGames  ปีที่แล้ว

      Sure, but they weren't readily in use in the 1980s ... especially in teeny, tiny towns. If this game were about rich businessmen or powerful politicians, then the cell phones would make more sense. But it's completely unrealistic that any of the characters in this game would have a cell phone plan.

    • @shadowmarine156
      @shadowmarine156 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Common use of cell phones wasn't till about the 2000s, plus in the 80s most cell phones where the size of a brick so definitely not something most people would be able to just carry on them their person with a bag or such. Also the likely hood of a small town in the 80s having a cell tower would be very unlikely as due to who in the 80s would have use for and could afford them.
