      Even more ridiculous than Detroit or Columbus being in the western conference. I think at some point in the 2000's the west had 3 or 4 teams more than the east. But Detroit somehow didn't mind traveling as much as they said they hated being in the West, it's when they finally switched back to the east that things started falling apart through bad luck such as europeans going back to EU/Russia before their time was really over, such as Datsyuk, Zetterberg (36 isn't that old when you produce the way he still did) and a few others, some losing their touch when they used to be superstars with different teams just 3-4 years prior (Mike Green), excellent first picks that didn't amount to much once in the NHL (big parallel with '00s/Edmonton for like 20 years) and #1 issue, goaltending, they could be fine with Osgood with a crazy lineup in front or a 42 year old Hasek, but when they started to insist on Jimmy Howard, it seems even Lidstrom couldn't have a very high positive +/- with him, always was only a backup goaltender.
      Columbus, had they been in the East when they were franchised into the league, playing the defensive style they played, more in-line with the Eastern Conference at the time, might have made the playoffs more often, the guy the put all their bets on, Marc Denis would have been much better in the very trap oriented East unlike the West where the game was slightly more offensive and physical, due to the fact most of the game would get to the boards and not be stuck in the neutral zone with plays barely ever being finished like many teams in the East played, it's what allowed Florida to be in the playoffs more often than they deserved, and I'm not biased, I think the same about my #1 team, the Habs, who bet on their goalie to do 90% of the job (Theodore could do miracles on demand, one season+playoffs, unrealistic for management back then to expect him to do what he pulled in 2001-2002 again and again), getting to second round without their #1 centre due to cancer for 80 games out of 82, a beautiful moment in sports overall when he came back with a shaved head for the last 2 games and playoffs, Saku had heart and gave his everything, too bad he's another case of "what if he played 82 games every season"...the best goal scorer for MTL was Oleg Petrov with 22 goals, insane that they won 6 games in the playoffs, just thanks to hooking and grabbing being non-calls 95% of the time in that dead puck era...so many teams played trap and rarely opened up the game in the East that those who didn't had better have an amazing top 6 and amazing first pair of D-men. Back then that would've been Ottawa, Boston, Toronto and Philly, back in 2001 to 2003 at least, everyone else was trap, trap, trap all the time, which would've helped Columbus a lot, when Rick Nash could have won them many 2-1 games.

    Probably my earliest memory of watching the game. Montreal started the season slowly and had a losing road record 20 games into the season. They had missed the playoffs the previous year and there was concern that they'd their coach, Claude Ruel, resigned something like 20 games into the season. At that point, Vancouver was sitting fourth in the standings and the Wings weren't far behind. During the playoffs, they were complete underdogs against first Boston and then Chicago. The Mahovlichs, Henri Richard, and Dryden were the heroes of those two series. Dryden was a phenom back then.
    Thanks THG!

    • @starledge
      @starledge หลายเดือนก่อน

      I remember them missing the playoffs in 70, it came down to the last game of the season against Chicago. They were tied in the standings and needed something like 5 or 6 goals for a tie-breaker to make the playoffs. A loss didn't matter if they had enough goals, or something like that. They scored a few but needed more so Ruel pulled the goalie and played most of the third period with six forwards. 1971 was my favorite playoffs of them all, the remarkable come back game against Boston. The Bruins were a true powerhouse team and nobody expected an upset.

    • @djd2819
      @djd2819 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@starledge Yeah, that was the last post-expansion year where the original six were in their own conference. Montreal finished the season at 38-22-16 - identical to the Rangers for fourth place but the first tie breaker in those days was GF and the Rangers had 246. Montreal entered the game at 242 - they needed 5 that night and pulled Rogie Vachon with around 8 mins to play.
      At the end of the day,. Montreal missed the playoffs with 92 pts in 76 games. St. Louis led the (so-called) West Division with six fewer points (at 86) and three other teams in that Division made the playoffs with losing records. Heck the Oakland Seals' dismal 22-40-14 was good enough for fourth place and a playoff berth.
      The NHL changed the rules the following year, partly because the inequity that kept Montreal out of the playoffs and put Oakland in.

    In game 2 against the Bruins, already down one game and now behind by 5-1 halfway through the game, Beliveau put the Habs on his back and led a comeback for the ages, humbling the arrogant Bruins. It was also my privilege to be comped tickets in the dead of February on a Tuesday night for a game at the Forum, in the reds at the blueline, from where we watched Beliveau score 3 goals against Minnesota, the last one being his 500th career goal. Sports leagues always seem to have an interesting relationship with geography.
    I thought Vancouver being in the east might have something to do with Vancouver wanting to be in the same division as Toronto and Montreal - but the league was playing a balanced schedule (6 games against each other team) so it would have hardly mattered.
    Moving Philly to the East when they moved Chicago to the West would have made geographic sense, and allowed Vancouver to be put in the West - but the Flyers would have hated the idea of being in a division with five Original Six teams.

      @@michaelleroy9281 I don't think that he was. I remember that it was around 2005 that Dominik (The Dominator) Hasek played in one of his last games as A Chicago Goalie

      Very close, they traded out so much talent in 1970-71, decimating what was a decent defense core in 1969-70, their goaltending tandem, and their offense. Then Roy Edwards gets a fractured skull so they lose their best goalie, and well yeah, the dead wings are here.

      This year, 1970-71 last place in the East Division even behind newcomers Buffalo and Vancouver
