Living up north in the NYC tri-state region most turtle breeders do hibernate their animals for better breeding results in the spring some breeds seem to require it. Our Eastern Boxies would climb into large, plastic footlockers (drilled w/holes for air circulation) & filled with equal parts hay, dry leaves, peat & soil then misted to just moisten. Depending on the temps they’d usually be in full hibernation mode by the end of October. Then all the footlockers would be secured and put into an unheated part of the basement where they’d be kept just above freezing - 35F to 38F for about 4 1/2 - 5 mo’s. About once a month during the winter we’d sprinkle just a couple cup-fulls of water in each footlocker to prevent dehydration until early April. As they’d wake up they’d be soaked, fed and put outside into their successive breeding areas; 1 male: 2 - 3 females. We always had amazing luck hatching out babies of most local native species; Boxies, Spotteds, Painted, Blandings & NA Wood Turtles. We would allow the aquatic & semi-aquatic species to hibernate in the body of water within their enclosure; each specific to that breed. Yes, we would be amazed to see Painteds (especially) swimming below the ice on sunny days usually in Feb/Mar. Turtles/torties are amazing creatures worthy of all our respect and care!

I recommend predator urine and facies in the enclosures. There is a European zoo that was struggling with breeding, and they built a rotating enclosure where three species shared every other day. One species was Leopards, the others two were Orangutans, and an Antelope species. Babies started coming quickly because of the predator pressure. A bit of fresh dog pee and poop could be very helpful. It’s easy enough to get😃

My box turtles hibernate at different times of the year because they live indoors. 3 do it in the hot part of summer and comes out when it cools down. 1 seem to do it in late winter and comes out when it gets hot. I just let them do there own thing. There substrate is keeped at 6 inches deep so they can borrow down when they want. They are all female and 2 lay eggs but sadly on males. My 1 three toed is about 30 years old and I have had her about 26 years how.
