Great video Pierce. I've had my three toed box turtle Lumpy since 1986. I appreciate your comments at the end of the video because the awful truth is I did not give her proper care until about eight years ago. It's truly a miracle that she is alive today. If Steve Irwin were alive today I'm sure he would enjoy giving me the ass kicking of the century. Im very ashamed of how I neglected her all those years. Decades actually. She's a beautiful little girl.

    I’m so impressed.
My son in Sarasota Florida (was with Ty Park but now with SeaScape) is a reptile caretaker and it’s his life’s passion.
I found your video bc he’s giving me a box turtle. He’s a pretty deformed little guy that was brought to him. He is so sweet and when given the choice of a Christmas gift I said, “”Can I have him?” Haha So excited for him to ship him to me.
Bc he’s so busy I looked up your video today to help me prep for care.
Your view on care and your attitude is very much like his in that you want people to have the correct information so they can make the best choices for their lifestyle. And absolutely not get discouraged or beat yourself up for mistakes.
As you said, we’re human and the most important thing we can do is learn.
    So….Let’s keep learning!!!
    And thanks!!!

I would add info on the water requirement. I put my 7 box turtles in my bathtub everyday or two during those months when they were not hibernating. Five or six inches of water. They loved it. Sometimes they submerged themselves. They never got dehydrated. I fed them a variety of food after their bath. I had a worm farm in my refridge that I bought from WalMart. They sucked the worms up like spaghetti and sometimes fought over the same worm. Okay, I'm fanatical. I gave them the freedom to go anywhere in my house. I found them in my shoes in the closet, or shelved sideways among the books in my bookshelf. I kept them outdoors during the summer and finally released them into a remote sanctuary with a creek. It broke my heart but I had become disabled and had no choice. It was worse than having a child leave me with an empty nest.

They’re honest mistakes but it’s good that there’s great information out there to help you avoid them. I also kept my turtle in a very well appointed terrarium. It had all the fixings, but was still only about a 20 gallon size. Perfect for my future rosy boa, but not for a very active turtle. I’m in the middle of moving him outside (I live within they’re native range as it is) with a huge 6 ft enclosure with lots of hiding spots, grass, plants, lots of mesh wiring on the lid so cats stay out and a little roof so air can get in but rain doesn’t flood the enclosure. I’m beyond excited to see my best friend have a home he deserves.

What a useful video. Thanks for being so honest about what you have done. What is the life expectancy of a box turtle? 25 years sounds like a long time. What is your box turtles favorite thing to eat?

My box turtle only eats turtle food pellets and meal worms. I've tried to feed it all kinds of fruits and veggies but it never eats it.

Oh Sh..t!!! I had no idea turtles can live that long. God bless Frankie wow 25 yrs old. That’s a big commitment. I heard pet birds live longer which is why I can’t have one. Wished dogs & cats lived that long.

I lucky to get my first box turtle from a Vet reptile specialist. He told me she was a one yr old girl from an abusive situation and it would be touch and go for her. She lived in a huge tank for the first 3 yrs, we live in So Calif so we were able to take the tank out in the day time and in for the night. I didn't let her live outside until she was four. Her diet was great, but I may have over fed because she is very big. She has a step sister, who is also a rescue, but was an adult when found so is perfect. Well, my Flash is going strong and will be 43 the end of May. Sister Fury we have 37yrs but know she's older,,,,just not how much. Flash is my joy. She gives me a high five. Actually raises her front leg when she see me. I don't know if that's HELLO or give me food. They live in a special enclosure where they can't escape. 80 feet by 4 feet. Lots of shrubs for shade, water dishes, bark huts, and a house at one end to sleep in. Never been a fight or bite, and they ignore the cats whrn they jump in.

I am getting a box turtle today from a feed and seed store. I have rescued a duck and a goat from them. They tried to get me to take a rooster. Said heck no to him. But got suckered into this turtle. I am hoping i can keep him outside. All the time. I didn't know they lived so long.

Hard to focus with the Bird being funny :D. In any case, I came across a situation in which someone had a Three Toed male and Asian female and eggs resulted. The female only produced 4 eggs, but one actually hatched. I made sure to separate the parents again and unfortunately, as far as a living creatures goes, the hybrid didn't live that long. Fortunately because it was a hybrid it didn't live that long. These were not the one I got when I was a kid but rather a rescue situation.

I've never had success with box turtles. Even when doing everything right I can't get them to eat. My only guess is that they are too stressed. I made sure to give them two hides, one cool side and one hot side. The terrarium is plenty large enough for it to explore around. They've always been pretty active and appear to be healthy and happy. Just refuse to eat. Got me thinking that I've always gotten bad specimens with parasites. Box turtles are supposed to be pretty hardy. Not in my case. It's tough losing a pet when you've tried everything that you can do.

She was so happy she even laid an egg after! Try going on a trip to a box turtle friendly outdoor area I think it's worth a try lmk if u ever do I wanna know either way GL
