Planing Board for Japanese and Western Planes

- Made a simple planing board, with edge planing too, inspired by the traditional Japanese ones, but without the sliding dovetails, so screws and nuts involved :) I've used a very hard and oily Iroko for the board, and maybe one day when I will have the proper tools I will update it more traditional.

Quicky project of a planing board and mini workbench. This is not the updated version of the low workbench😁, but so far, except the lack of vise, I might use this as my general tasks one. I thought of integrating the vise too, but the steel jaws are flushed with the board or higher, so need to study a solution for the 2.0 version
Adrian Preda, you could add a small moxon style to the insert end. Remove the stop and attach the vise.
+LimitedGunnerGM Yes, might be an idea. My goal is to be light not to counter weight the board when no clamping and decent sturdy. I thought also of the Veritas pipe vise or to build myself one from acme thread screw. Normal thread typr is kinda useless, will rack, lots of turns etc
Adrian Preda if you mount the vice backwards, it will put the weight between the legs instead of hanging off of one end. I love where you're going with this idea so far!
+LimitedGunnerGM This idea I have for a temporary vise, get out the old 6" vise from the low workbench and make it portable, clamped, to either this board or something else

I just watched all your videos, from #1 to this one. I like the addition of the natural sound over the music. Your skills in hand tool woodworking are impressive. Indeed, lately I use more natural sound cause it's quieter now than the old place I've lived before; I had two churches near me, bus station below, street traffic :) , not so disturbing for me, but the camera audio captured everything. I've started woodworking as a hobby about 2 years ago, and almost everything I did, from the low workbench till now, is posted here on the channel, probably skipped a few little projects. Very pretty and cute, must be very convenient for smaller workpieces. All the screws don't feel "Japanese" style, though. I've recently read a book about workbenches by Scott Landis, it mentions several Japanese ones, including this kind of planing board. Some of the things I got from the book: the planing stop and the feet can be installed in sliding dovetails. Feet in sliding dovetails supposedly help a lot to keep the board flat (prevent warping). The stop in a sliding dovetail is very simple to remove and reinstall (quick to swap between different height stops, if needed). The book also mentions that it's better not to apply any finish, and it's best to use a medium hard wood. Too hard woods (e.g. beech) and finish makes the board too slippery.
Thanks! If you look in my videos, Low Workbench 2.0, I upgraded this planing board to a little workbench where I made those stops with sliding dovetails. For the top I just used one coat of oil, just a minimal protection also for delaying it getting dirty. It's true, it can get slippery, but that's just for a couple of days, eventually and quickly, when you start working on it, will become "rough".

+Leslie Clement Hi thanks for your comment. I've put a link in the description with the drill stand I use. It's not a substitute for a proper drill press, but if you don't have the space and make small tasks with it, will work decent, way better than free hand😁

Thanks Ricardo! Now I do it at 32deg (30+2). It was 25 originaly, but if I do also smoothing with it I get tearout easily so I raise it. Otherwise 25 (actually 25+2) is ideal for shooting board.

I know when you use jack-plane you have to put it to 45 degrees to make furniture in European style.

Thank you arkadas for your comment! The western plane is actually 37 degrees, it's a low angle/bevel up plane, with 12 deg bed and 25 deg blade plus a 2 degree secondary bevel, so 39 in total. The japanese plane I really don't remember, I will measure it, but I think is around 45.

What do you call those blocks that you're resting your wood on while you work on it?
can that side rail piece be used as a shooting board alternative for end grain? i want to make this planing board and a shooting board (for japanese planes) but im not sure how to make a shooting board. if this can be an aternative, itll be easier on me. Any suggestions on the best mini drill press to buy? I would use that so much...
+Andrew Speirs-Bridge dremel has a drill press adapter for rotary tools but mabe is too mini, otherwise this kind of stands i have, wolfcraft, link in description, but like this is still a compromise, because of the electric hand drill you have high rpm especialy ifu use forstner bits which req low rpm. But in absence of space and normal drill press these do their job better then drilling by hand
I have several of these. Some have slots so that I can put pegs in them to hold the board in place.
How did you square the board? with hand tools or machines? thanks.
+AndroidGameplays4Every1 No, machines, jointer and thickness planer, mostly for precision to a have a flat board for reference, and also cause I didnt have the guts to use the plane in this hard wood, thats why i use a little sandpaper, just to make it smooth without altering the flatness too much
Yo adrian , if one has the side pieces skewed against the planing board you get more width of coverage on your plane blade so that you are not using the same spot on the blade each time. FYI

You said it yourself :) drill press adapter. For the one I use there is a link in the description
can I ask why you went with screws for the feet instead of a sliding dovetail??
I've said it in the description, maybe in future I will update it so, but in the meantime I like to spend more time building other woodworking projects instead of tools

If the steel is good enough yes, but still it may require several sharpnings
I have a similar planing board. But instead of a piece of wood for a planing stop I just have a row of screws that can be raised or lowered to fit the thickness of wood being planed.
Good idea that too! I'm a little afraid of metal stops, although I never touched my bench dogs or other wood planing stops with the plane, it still brings a fear that one moment I may be clumsy and to that :) Veritas has an adjustable Alu plane stop and some nice brass bench dogs, which are at reasonable prices I think and look nice, and always when I order tools I look at them too, but in the end I never dare to take them :)
Adrian Preda Yeah if I'm planning very thin stock I find myself constantly checking the screws lol. You get used to it though.
There are many different options that you can go for. I have planing boards that allow me to slide the slot in and out. I have boards with slots for pegs. I have jigs that allow be to put in planing boards. I have planing boards that allow me to use clamps.
The limits are your imagination.

Thanks. The western plane is a Veritas smoothing plane, and by how much it costs, is dead flat and perpendicular, the japanese plane, luckily, from first time was perpendicular, but even if in the future will twist, I can adjust it in the shooting board with the western plane. What you said next, google didn't translate enough, but I will guess :) The wobbling when oiling is because the sawhorses are not equal. The main board is from iroko and the legs from larch, they are cut perfectly on machines. This woods should stay steady in time, but even if they will twist, I can always unscrew them and run them on the machines, table saw, thickness planer etc
I would suggest building a proper workbench....
