My name is Stephen and this is my first video in a series about how to become an apprentice electrician. This is a fantastic career and one of the best decisions I’ve made in my life. If you’re asking yourself if you should become an electrician, the short answer is yes.
In this video I give you an overview of what an Electrician apprenticeship looks in a nutshell.
I then go on to explain what the application process, aptitude test, and interview look like. This information is specific to my personal experience with IBEW Local 48, but this will also give you a good general idea of what the process looks like with other Local Unions or ever non-union shops.

My journeyman is one of the worst person that I've known. " i don't teach u right because u are going to stole my job" study hard guys. Some will try to stop u.
Wow man, that’s a terrible way to treat your apprentice. I’ve been fortunate to have great journeymen but I’ve heard about those kind before. That’s really unfortunate and no way to keep the trade alive. The irony there is that while he thinks he’s retaining job security by not teaching anyone else how to do the job, he’s probably isn’t very valuable to his company and could end up losing his job for that very reason. Sorry you have to deal with that. 😕

@@MadElectrician is fine. Because of that. I enrolled to a class in havc and i learned my job there. Now I'm going back for a electrician class level l,ll,lll. And my future looks better now. Also, i found out that the guy that didn't want to help me he doesn't understand the basics of electricity and now i know more than him. It's life i guess. Thank u for caring.
@@anotheronebitesthedust246 hey man I'm 25 and still don't know exactly what to do with my life I did college for a bit but didn't work out and well im trying to consider the trades, I want to consider being an electrician but from what I've heard and watched the process is tedious and not 100% guaranteed, ive been looking at HVAC too would you consider it being a more better option in terms going through a quicker process?

LU 100. The apprentices here created a “board” for apprentices, when JWs treat them wrong they can go to the apprentice board and get it handled.
Watched some of your videos last year after deciding to take different direction with my career. Applied to the IBEW. Studied for the test with the resources you provided. Got the interview in March and practiced for it with tips you gave. Had to wait until this month to find out whether I got in or not and I’m happy to say Local 26 here in VA has given me the apprentice position for this fall.

I was 20 in 1999. Became an electronics tech in the navy. Got kicked out after 2 years for pot. Around 30 went to college n 2 years of electronics engineering degree w honors. Overdosed from drugs. Here I am at 43. Serious considering this route. All you young men, learn from my mistakes. However, whether you are 60 or 20, it's all in your mind. You can do this. Be Smart!

I used your guidance extensively during the last year and a half as I prepared before my local 275 opened the apprenticeship window, applying once it opened, studying for the aptitude test, touching up my resume, and preparing for the interview. I ended up ranking in the top 5, got my call to work a couple of days ago and have my first union electrician apprenticeship job starting this Wednesday! I don't think I would have been nearly as successful without your content as a resource. I'm extremely grateful. Thank you so much for what you do here!

First off - great videos. I love that someone is preparing the youth for the road ahead if they're hoping of pursuing the great spark trade.
And I can appreciate that math COULD be very important to an electrician. mostly in school when learning the theory.
I'm a journeyman in both Canada and the US with licenses in a couple different states, and a journeyman lineman to boot! But honestly I could go up to a couple weeks without having to math anything unless I need to calibrate an instrument with a weird specific gravity.
So math is important for sure, but it's not like you need it all the time - it's just when you do need it, you really need it.
If I can offer any further advice to viewers: don't shy away from the controls side of the trade, with everything getting more and more automated take advantage of learning about control circuits and relay logic and PLCs and even Arduino projects to get a leg up...you'll be in demand as soon as you get licensed and will never regret it.

Definitely be prepared to explain why you want to be an electrician and why they should choose you. You may be asked other questions too so just try to go in as prepared as possible for whatever they throw at you. Your portfolio is a big part of the interview too, so check out that video if you haven't yet.

This channel has been a big help! I’m 24 and deciding to make a career change into becoming an electrician. I have a good job right now with great benefits but it is horrible work place for my asthma. I know I’m gonna have to take a pay cut but it’ll be worth it in the long run. You have helped me with getting ready for applying for the apprenticeship, thanks a ton!

I had to take a pay cut too when I first started, but it took no time at all for me to start making the same/ more. It will definitely be worth it. These raises come quick.

My uncle was a journeyman electrician and I spent every weekend working with him. I still haven’t stopped loving electrical work. Don’t know why I waited so long to start... but hey, it’s never too late

i went through this process via a union as he mentions and it's a great breakdown in detail of what the process is like. I remember my bootcamp was stripping scrap wire and stocking the inventory carts for a couple weeks before i got my chance on a job site with a crew.
Almost 30, spent the past decade screwing around with crappy jobs. Hoping I can get an apprenticeship and turn this all around.

Same here. Passed the background check. Did good on the aptitude test, and now my interview is scheduled Nov 9th. Lil nervous but I know that with my dedication and if they give me a chance to completely switch trades, considering my immaculate work ethic, they won't regret it boys. Wish me luck

This vid is really helpful! Im just graduating highschool and decided against going to college despite pressure from my family and school counselors. I did go to a vocational highschool and i did electrical and it was so fun! But i never thought of actually pursuing it till recently. Im just nervous because as a female im unsure if I'll be able to do the job as well as men because of physical strength 💪 but i am good at the work ive done at school im just concerned that i might be overwhelmed by the real thing.

Let me throw a little encouragement your way.
First, it’s awesome that you’re considering this as a career, especially right out of high school. I think that’s the best time to get in. Most people, myself included, wish they decided to do this right out of high school. You will have a huge head start, and your pension will be incredible with all of those years in the trade.
As far as being female, don’t let that stop you, and don’t let anyone tell you that you can’t do this. I’ve worked alongside lots of incredible women in this trade and they have all been some of the hardest working electricians I’ve known. It’s becoming more of a normal thing to have women in this trade, and really any trade for that matter. If this is something that you want to do, then go for it.
It’s definitely overwhelming at first, but I think everyone feels that way. Like anything, If you commit yourself to working hard and learning then you will quickly gain confidence and feel like you know what’s going on.

We need more women in the trades go for it. Im a Certified Welder planning on joining electric program soon. The 2 ladies that graduated with me were amazing hard working and one lady graduated at the top of the class and is now working for Nascar $35/hr... Mostly being a female in this new generation means doors are opening. Being a male myself I support every woman in the trades. So yea please come pursue a career in the trades
It doesn’t matter if you’re a female. If you enjoy electrical and want to skip paying $100,000 or more for college then do it. I’m a journeyman local 60. There’s so much work here in south Texas it’s crazy. Actually here they will take almost anyone. Right now they’re looking for over 50 journeymen. Over 50 CE’s. Over there it’s a little different to a certain extent. They don’t wait that long here. College class on Electrical theory😂 we have had helpers with zero experience and start putting them to work immediately. Alright people move away from Portland and move to south Texas. Seems like their process is way too long.
this isnt as physically demanding as some other jobs. and if you happen to be smaller you will have a much easier time on those jobs that require you be in some tighter places.
If your family is pressuring you to go college and if you want to go make sure you “pressure” them to pay for everything, school, books, gas to get to school.
There was a journeyman that put this idea in my head yesterday. I work in agriculture as a heavy mechanic. And a large portion of my job is wiring in mag switches, wiring in breakers for 240v 3phase and 480v 3phase, motors, wiring transformers, ect.
Well I really enjoy working with electricity. And he tried to poach me to his company and unfortunately I had to tell him I learned on the job and I am not certified. Made me feel good about my knowledge though that he thought I had my license.
But it made me think... I enjoy the work, I find it interesting... maybe I should pursue that... and I probably have a leg up on some with my experience.
I had a really good job but my last day was yesterday, Friday, and I start my apprenticeship this coming Monday!! Nervous because I’ve only changed 2 ceiling fans in my life and a few outlets but you have me hopeful!!

I currently install windows and I use many tools. I use cutoff wheels to cut J molding and other metals, I use a circular saw to cut OSB or other kinds of wood, I use an impact to disassemble window frames (or a paint scrapper on some frames), an AC/DC detector if I ever work around live wires. I have construction experience
I don’t have any experience in electrical though; but I know basic wire types like Romex, Coax, UF, Aluminum Clad wires and Low Voltage. I also know how to strip wire. I know Romex has a bare wire which is the ground, black is negative and white is positive. I notice most houses use 12 or 14 gauge wires
I think I’ll apply to become an apprentice this coming March. I hope I get in my first time. I can work with my uncle for the next several months until I get in. If I fail my first time, I’ll take a class at school and apply to be a helper
I'm not an electrician but i,m trying to get an apprenticeship for pipefitting or steamfitting, this actually helped me.

im looking into switching careers to improve myself and my financial standing. Im 30 and I had worked in several fields , automotive manufacturing, steel work, cable technician , food manufacturing and graduated culinary to become a chef. I found out while working in the restaurant and hospitality industry, that it was not for me and the money was great for me to support my self or my girlfriend. I am worried that I will be to old to start out on this an have a-lot of catching up to do. but i really want to make some real life changes , have a solid career for life and make really good money. I am a hard work, always ready to learn .
Ive recently found your channel and this is really helpful. the city I live in a major city with alot of construction jobs and a local IBEW union.I was wrestling with the idea if I want to go to trade school or start an apprenticeship , im thinking the latter would be the best option

Right on man! I’m glad to hear that you’re interested in pursuing the trade and that my videos have been helpful! When I was a store manager at AT&T I made customer service my top priority and consequently the growth we saw at our store was pretty significant. I just try to apply that same philosophy here on TH-cam and have been pretty amazed at the response from people. I appreciate the feedback!

That is actually a video idea that I’ve had since I first started posting videos. It’s a topic that I really want to cover but I’m just waiting to find the right person to interview/ make a video with. I’ll will definitely do that video some day though, and hopefully sooner than later.
What I will say right now though is that I’ve worked along side and had school with many women who are fantastic electricians. I’ve never seen any sort of different in what women can do compared to men. It also seems to pretty much be a normal thing to have women in the trade now which is great. The IBEW really pushes to bring more women into the trade, and for that reason you might actually have a bit of an advantage getting into the apprenticeship if you do eventually apply.
Funny enough I was thinking about doing this topic again today. Thanks for the recommendation and I’ll definitely get a video posted about this eventually ⚡️

this process sounds complicated. im 28 i just applied with no experience at one place but they were hurting for workers so they just hired me without an interview. they had me doin labor work for the first couple weeks which was pretty overwhelming for me. now 1.5 months later they have me with a journeyman installing/bending conduit and strut racks all day long for a hospital. my feet dont hurt anymore and im actually excited to start my day.

Since then I've successfully navigated the whole process and today got a letter saying that I ranked #10 in my zone for Inside Wireman. These videos and comments have been invaluable to me during the waiting and periodic steps along the way. Keep up the good work. Local 280. I'll have to get you a beer sometime!

For me here at Local 48 I got scheduled for an aptitude test within about a month. With everything that’s going on right now though things could be different. Still, I’d probably expect to hear something within a month or so.

Minimum requirements to be an electrician:
-must have at least one DUI.
-must have at least one deduction from your check on child support with verification on paper.
-must show up on the job site already drunk.
-must be able to work while drunk.
And lately.....most important.....must be able to get stuff done even though they don’t have enough equipment nor material for you to finish the job.
If you meet those minimum requirements then welcome!
Just playing......but in most cases this is what you really get on the job sites with at least one of these issues that’s no joke. Did the entire IBEW apprenticeship and these issues are all I saw.

Had a good chuckle from this. You are almost guaranteed to run into someone who fits that description when you're in construction. In my experience most electricians have actually been pretty professional, but I've met one or two that also fit that description 😂

It’s absolutely true! 20+ years since my first electrical program and I often wonder how many people from that class are still alive. Lots of addiction issues all around and it seems to extend into the sub trades as well. I know many who started out in the trade figured it was the easiest gig and provided the most opportunity for screwing around, funny since there are some pretty serious hazards involved!

I’m 14 tryna soak up everything
First and foremost, thank you for all your guidance so far. Would you still recommend applying to become a material handler if I have 2 years of trade experience (carpentry, concrete, and roofing?) I went to college out of high school and got my degree but I’m getting into my late 20’s with no set career path. I applied to IBEW Local 48 and have been studying away for the aptitude test.

1) Yes, there are tests all throughout the classroom part of your apprenticeship. I believe the curriculum is the same across the board for IBEW apprentices. We have a test every class going over the homework from the previous week. Then there are final exams, code tests, and also craft certifications (craft certifications are testing you more on the hands on stuff).
2) Typically the whole application process takes three months. One month to apply, another for your test, and another for your interview. Then depending on the rank that you get on your list, that will determine how quickly you start. I ranked 64 on the list and our training center was taking in 18 new apprentices each month. So I started my apprenticeship three months after my interview, which meant that it was actually six months after I initially applied that I started my apprenticeship.
3) The classes are actually a combination of those. Mainly lectures, but also hands on labs for some of it.
4) There are lots of different subjects (dc theory, ac theory, motor controls, grounding/ bonding, fire alarm, PLC’s, etc. The term that most people struggle with at our training center is 4th term (it’s very math heavy and has lots of theory/ circuit calculations). That was actually one of my best terms but I’ve always been pretty decent with math. I haven’t really struggled with any of the terms, but I think that’s because I spend a lot of time reading/ studying the material so that I know I actually understand it.

I just finished my interview and got placed 128th on the ranked list; not great, not terrible. Any idea how big the list is currently? I'm a soldier in the National Guard and we're going to be deploying in 2022, so I'm really hoping I can get started and actually become an apprentice before I have to leave. I am a senior in high school and was initially considering the automotive field because I have always loved cars, but I did research on that career field and I am not so sure now due to job outlook and pay. I was also looking at the electrician field because overall it looks like the better option. The more I do research, the more I get excited about it. I have loved things like this too. I had a circuit kit when I was in elementary school and whenever electricians work around the house I always am interested in the work they are doing. My parents and family want me to go to college but there are many things that interest me that don't require me getting a college degree. My grades are good in my opinion (Mostly As and a fair amount of Bs) so they think that I should go to college because of that. However, I don't want to go to college if I have a plan already that doesn't involve that. I'm not against college. Becoming an electrician seems like the best choice right now. There are tons of advancement opportunities. Tons of benefits and there looks to be a consistent need for electrical expertise. Hey Stephen, I hope you’re doing well. I am a data center/cabling technician. I’ve done a lot of construction job sites as well as live data centers. I deal with low voltage. I work with a lot of conduits and sometimes even make pathways for conduits. I also work with a lot of electricians and the electricity trade has always caught my attention. A lot of my uncles are electricians as well. Do you recommend me applying for the apprenticeship program first or get a job as an electrician so I can get experience then apply for the program?

Right on, glad to hear it! I wouldn’t ask about being a material handler at all during this application process, but if for some reason you don’t get accepted then I would definitely recommend looking into becoming a material handler. If you can make it in without becoming a material handler first then that would be awesome. It would kind of give you a head start since you wouldn’t be spending a year or so being a material handler before starting your apprenticeship.

AS for a WA non union electrician (myself) : Answered a craig's list add for a new apprentice wanted, ( No testing, no school grades required, No waiting) Went and got my $65 apprentices card from L&I. Received hands on trained and schooled privately from Master/State Inspector. 48 hours of education needed and i paid close to $150 per 8 hour class. Got my 4000 hours and passed my test within 3 years. Started in 2014. Now as 02 "Resi" making over $30hr. No heavy competition in non union. Sadly the state rules for going to through a certified apprenticeship 01 means i would take over a $10 pay cut. That was an easy nope with a wife, 4 kids, 2 cars and a house. So I'm staying 02 for now. After 8 years now doing electrical and working for one of the top companies in Clark County I am very happy having NO college debt. Wish i had started at 20 not 34.
Side note: There are bad Electrical contractors out there in the non union field. Stay away from anyone sending unlicensed people out in their own van, not pulling permits, working out of ratio, and on the job drug use. I work with and know state and city inspectors, as well as the compliance team and they are cracking down and tossing out fines left and right.

I'd like to join the IBEW obviously starting as an apprentice, but I'm wondering how good of a fit it would be for me.
I am a religious man, and in my religion we don't work on the Sabbath day which is from friday at sunset until saturday at sunset.
We also observe 3 "feasts" throughout the year:
The first of those being a week long feast called Pesach(Passover), where we are permitted from doing any work on the first and last day of the feast plus any Sabbath that may occur during, -This usually occurs in the beginning of April or May(depending on the ripeness of barely in Israel and the sighting of the new moon).
The next is Shavuot that begins 50 days from the Sabbath that occurs during Pesach where we have another High Holy Day where no work can be done.
The last is Sukkot, beginning roughly 6 months after Pesach where we have another week long feast where we cannot work on the first or last day of that week as well as any Sabbath in between.
Do you think, me requiring all of these non-negotiable days off will hurt my chances of getting in?
Do you think that even with these exceptions being known I would be expected to work anyways?

I’m 26, currently an Air Traffic Controller, i’ve recently learned how to and installed LEDs in my car and since learned about wiring, wire tapping, soldering, wiring techniques, voltage, wattage, wire gauges and such and I love it. I’ve since had a curiosity to become an electrician. Thanks man

@@Justjackson7 I was fortunate enough to become an Air Traffic Controller in the Army. After my first deployment I was offered an ATC position as a contractor and been doing that ever since.
@@Justjackson7 the FAA will announce entry level openings for the general public (try following the FAA Facebook page, checking the FAA website, or USAJOBS). You apply, and if accepted you'll have to take an exam called the ATSA basically seeing if you are mentally suitable for the job. if you pass that then the next step is waiting to go to the FAA Academy (FAA Air Traffic Control School) and if you pass the school then depending how good you did will determine your list of facilities you can choose from depending on what region you chose or were given.

Yes, being an electrician is risky business but it's rewarding if that's what you want to do and is a high paying career. Something we need more of these days. Especially with the cost of living present. Yes, reading is crucial for any job and math is also important. Math isn't my strongest subject. I understand basic math but not the more advanced stuff.
I have a learning disability but i have a pretty big interest in how electronics work so hopefully I’ll have a good chance at success.

Haha, right on. Yeah, I think you will definitely have an easier time since you have some trade related knowledge already. Wiring things up can look pretty complicated in the beginning, but it’s pretty amazing how simple it is once you learn the basics. Don’t get me wrong, some things can be incredibly complicated, but for the most part wiring stuff up is very straight forward. Hope you decide to pursue this! It’s one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. ⚡️
