Ponds are ideal habitats for aquatic plants, and some will always be present. Plants are a necessary component of pond ecosystems because they perform valuable functions. Photosynthesizing plants produce oxygen that is needed to sustain fish life. Plants take in ammonia that is produced by fish, thereby helping to prevent accumulation of potentially toxic concentrations of ammonia. Nevertheless, plants can cause problems in ponds and control measures often must be used to eliminate or reduce their abundance. Aquatic herbicides can quickly and economically control problem weeds in commercial fish ponds. There are also preventative, biological, and mechanical means of control. Using a combination of these methods within a management plan is the most cost effective, environmentally safe way to manage aquatic weeds.
