I used to play in a concert band. I actually contacted a guy who had transposed the song for a concert band, and he was willing to transpose it for our band for $500. In HS, marching band, we made it like a May Day Parade. Even before they announced the marching band, we started coming ... One of the kids grand dad was in the red army; and had a russian button box accordion, and he was marching with us- in full dress.. medals flashing in the flood lights. Playing Katshyua. Everyone in the stands was dead silent. No one was paying attention to the foot ball announcements anymore. Just an old Russian man playing a slow sad version of Katyshya. He saluted and stood like that. Even the MC's shut up. I still don't know how we got it all so right. Just behind the stands, we started with Slovakian Farewell, and had fake blank firing drill rifles. and fired off three rounds in a volley. We busted out into the full red army style. Perfect formation. Coming from both sites of the field... a nod to the invasion of Berlin..... met up at the back of the field, and came forward. Now, we made some of the performers injured. Two cheerleaders looked like ww2 red cross nurses helping someone hobble on a crutch, and so on. It was a full performance! We, the captains of the marching band came in unit style. Not everyone had access to a Russian uniform, we used dark green button ups, with dual pockets. We made the look, I had on my G. Grandfathers ww1 dress whites. In the stands, so many vets.... they all stood up and put their hands over their hearts. Two of them Russian WW2 Vets; crying. We nailed it, the last song; in the hills of Manchuria... and one by one each line turned and went off the ground until, the old Russian was playing his accordion. We kept playing slower and softer as we went off. To show the passing of time, until he stopped playing and it was just a single soft note, he gave a sharp salute.... slipped out of his uniform.... and walked off. To show what he once was... get it? that was 1999; to this day that show is still talked about in my old HS. :)

Not everyone had access to a Russian uniform, we used dark green button ups, with dual pockets. We made the look, I had on my G. Grandfathers ww1 dress whites. In the stands, so many vets.... they all stood up and put their hands over their hearts. Two of them Russian WW2 Vets; crying. We nailed it, the last song; in the hills of Manchuria... and one by one each line turned and went off the ground until, the old Russian was playing his accordion. We kept playing slower and softer as we went off. To show the passing of time, until he stopped playing and it was just a single soft note, he gave a sharp salute.... slipped out of his uniform.... and walked off. To show what he once was... get it? that was 1999; to this day that show is still talked about in my old HS. :)
