    Great video as always, thanks for the great moments and pictures!
    The R10 + RF100-400 combo looks like a great starting point for anyone starting out with wildlife photography on a budget. It's so small that they won't get tired of the hobby by carrying it around, and can get great results with that animal eye AF which is especially useful if you're just starting out, it's probably a lot easier to get great pictures from the get go than any camera that doesn't have that feature. Getting that combo also lands you with great upgrade paths options for the future. In its price range it could be the best animal eye AF on the market, so a very good value proposition, but I'll be waiting for your review before making any recommendations!
    I appreciate you sharing your point of view having tried all the different R cameras. It seems the R7/10 were hyped up at launch to have the same AF performance as the R3, and it looks like we're starting to discover it was probably too good to be true. They're good cameras but maybe we set our expectations a bit too high on them. The argument that the R7 isn't a true modern flagship APSc like the 7D2 was at its time is getting more and more true it seems. Thank you for giving us that reality check!
    Your experience with the superb fairy wren with the Sigma at close range looks exactly like some of the issues I've noticed in my testing. With accel/deccel not set at -2 the pulsing bug can be so intense that it can completely lose focus out of seemingly nowhere, and your recording of the viewfinder showcased it perfectly. Accel/deccel to -2 is the main setting that helped at least prevent the tracking to not go completely off.
    Before anyone goes out to try the settings listed in the description, you should know that I can't confirm for sure that the values for +2 sensitivity and slowest AF are truly optimal and I'm still testing those two. Interesting to note is that I recall Jan Wegener recommending to set both accel/deccel AND sensitivity to -2 with his RF100-500 to help the R7 keep the tracking sticking to birds. On perfectly still dummy subjects on a tripod and house sparrows at a feeder high sensitivity seemed to help a little bit with the pulsing (definitely not as much as Accel/deccel), but there might be trade offs to those settings in harder, in the field scenarios. Maybe standard AF speed and something like sensitivity at 0 will turn out to be a better middle ground.
    In my testing, with sensitivity at -2 the tracking blue box seemed to lag behind the house sparrows as they were moving and jumping around, while at +2 they were more locked on them. On dummy subjects at close range in pulsing tests, it seemed as though the tracking would lock back onto focus quicker with sensitivity at +2, making the pulses slightly shorter, but it had no effect on the frequency or intensity of the pulses.
    As for AF speeds using the dock, once the tracking locked into a subject, the slowest speed seems fast enough to keep track of even fast moving subjects and in a smoother way, and I've used it for BIF on cormorants with great success. But there definitely is a trade off in initial acquisition speed. Going from infinity to near and vice versa is noticeably slower, so perhaps standard speed will turn out to be a better middle ground.
    Just wanted to give a bit more info to you Duade until you have the chance to try it for yourself, hopefully this and the info I gave already will give you a good point to get started with your own testing. I'm just glad I could get the conversation started and I think you have much more experience than me so I will trust your judgement after you've had a go at trying out the different settings. Can't wait for the next feature of our friend Gary 😉 Cheers!
    PS: This might sound like a weird question, but do Australians ever get "accustomed" to seeing kangaroos in the wild, or is it the kind of animal that just gives you those chills everytime you see it? Here in Canada I find that some animals like bears and moose are just so impressive, everytime you encounter them it's like you're seeing them for the first time! I get those same vibes watching kangaroos in your vids, everytime my jaw just drops to the floor!

    • @Duade
      @Duade  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks Simon, I agree with everything you have said and I look forward to trying these settings out myself in the future, we have rain for the next week and I have a busy week at work so the testing will have to wait. Having grown up in NZ, Kangaroos were a real highlight when I first saw them in the wild, I still love to see them and I get a buzz when I go inland and see the other main species the Red Kangaroo, we only get Eastern Grey here. There are a number of Wallabies I am still to see and plenty of other critters. So I look forward to hopefully doing some travel in the future. I would love to see a Moose or a Bear. My wife and family are all Canadian and have heard many Moose and Bear stories. Cheers, Duade

      As someone who is looking to start out without any experience beyond my flagship smartphone, would you still suggest the R10 + RF100-400mm ten months later, or should I spend that little bit extra for the R7?

    • @simonthibodeau7082
      @simonthibodeau7082 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@SavRSx unless you plan to upgrade again down the line, I think I would go with the R7. With the R7, you're a lot more future proof. Especially if wildlife will be the main focus. If wildlife isn't the main focus of your purchase, the R10 can certainly still deliver great results.
      But if you get more and more into it, the ergos, small buffer and small battery will be annoying. The R7 also performs quite a bit better AF wise, which you can never have enough. Stuff like IBIS and much better video capabilities just sealed the deal for me. I've had my R7 since release and plan to keep it for many more years to come. If I had gone R10, I'd probably still be thinking about upgrading a year later.
      But if you were go FF anyway eventually, the R10 is a good starting point.

    • @philippe-malet
      @philippe-malet ปีที่แล้ว

      Hello. Je n'ai pas la seconde vidéo dont tu parles pour donner tes conclusions sur le R10. Je shoote en R7 + 100-500 RF (après avoir essayé 1 mois le Sigma 159-600 bien vite revendu). Mon épouse en R10. Je confirme que l'autofocus n'est pas aussi performant pour la mise au point initiale sur le sujet. Par contre, une fois le sujet net, il colle comme sur le R7 et ça reste net avec quelques déchets acceptables. Philippe

All I have to whisper is “It’s kicking off!” She will shoot out of bed and race for her camera scrambling and asking “what do I do, what do I do?” I am usually grinning from ear to ear watching her panic and race to get set up. Hi Duade, what a thrill as usual to watch your videos, I can feel the genuine devotion for the local wildlife. On the technical aspect, owning a R10 + RF100-400 to start some wildlife photography, i would hesitate to add an 1.4x extender to this zoom which is already as dim as F8 wide open at 400mm ! It is a bit too much for the current AF technology, and i bet it would have been the same for an R7 which is no different in its AF implementation, the cost of the R10 was not cut on that aspect: same processor and AF software, same principle of dual pixels spread on an APS-C-sized sensor.

    I've been practicing birding on the plethora of pigeons and guls around me with the same lens on an R7. This really is a very powerful combo, if a little heavy. I do get pulsing too, or having a hard time getting on subject. But the lens does let me to manual and the AF eventually does catch the subject. Only seems to happen between 500-600mm so far, I haven't shot under 500 except for right at 150.

    • @Duade
      @Duade  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for sharing your experience, it does appear to be a common experience, be sure to check out the post by Simon about how he setup is Sigma lens for better AF. Cheers, Duade
      "1. Pulsing appears to disappear from 7m/22ft to infinity.
      2. Use Moderate OIS - (You need the dock to change this) This increases keepers as the Standard and Dynamic OIS try to keep the viewfinder steady which appears to be causing soft shots in bursts as it is trying to reset the lens. You can use moderate whilst using a tripod or monopod.
      3. In AF menu set accel/deccel to -2, Tracking sensitivity +2, Switching tracked Subject to 0.
      4. Using the Sigma Dock set to slowest AF setting."

    While I have been a devoted Canon user for over ten years, (even longer if you count pocket cameras) I doubt I would be interested in the R10 except for possibly using it to teach someone the basics of digital photography. Definitely not a camera I would carry in my bag. Still, another fantastic video! It is amazing how you make the viewer feel as if they are right there with you in the field. Also really appreciate your genuine love of your craft. I imagine I would enjoy your review of just about any camera or gear, especially when done in the field with real life situations. Hi David, it lacks a number of features of the R7 and is a budget orientated option however does provide eye tracking, fps in a very affordable and small package. I would favour the R7 as the better all around option and I am early on my testing of the R10. It is a very small camera so if you have bigger hands it is a bit awkward. I think I would advise saving the extra money for the R7 to be honest. Cheers, Duade

    • @Duade
      @Duade  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for the feedback, good to hear the Sigma is working well on the R6. The monitor basically replicates the viewfinder however does not have touchscreen ability. The Ninja can record the viewfinder or act as an external recorder, however that is not necessary if you just want an external screen. I don't really use it when not recording for TH-cam as I find the viewfinder much easier to find the subject. But if you are in a blind or setup somewhere it can be handy. Cheers, Duade

    Good video as always Duade.
    I'm currently testing the R10 and the AF does have some issues with small birds/animals as well as objects in low light. If you hold the AF too long on a small subject that's moving, the AF will start to search elsewhere. And in low light it will even have issues on single point. It acts a bit like the r7 with the RF 100-400 on AF. Ive been using the EF 70-200 III and RF 100-500 to test.
    Now in good light it performs very well. It is still goof AF system but as you saw it. is not as good as the R7 or the R5. Still for the money it's a good rig.

It could either be the way it behaves on mirrorless bodies, or that sigma changed the behavior in some firmware update.

  • @trevor9934
    @trevor9934 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Totally agree with the comment below by Olcay Kabacali - your videos are excellent!!!!
    Your demonstrations tend to suggest to me the old adage: 'you get what you pay for' - in this case relative to the higher-end R bodies vs consumer level units, in terms of tracking at least. It seems Canon has to do some more work on the tracking for the APS-C units in particular - it seems with both the EF 3rd party and native RF lenses. That said, such a technology is not a panacea, and you proved that by switching to a more traditional focusing method with your last shots.
    I wish I was in Oz, I would make available my Sigma 60-600s and my own copy of the 150-600c, so you could gather some more data on this eye tracking issue! I mentioned I get different results to some degree and wondered how the variables in our situations have an impact. I shoot hand-held, no monitor, and it may be that the AF on my Sigmas (which I have customized somewhat with the docking station) and focus/tracking setting on my R-bodies have any significance...
    Getting good data is all about the details, isn't it? 🙂
    Ergonomically, I prefer a larger camera body to give more room for control access, more control options, but also to balance out the bigger lenses. That and the loss of portrait controls, were reasons why I was disappointed that Canon did not offer battery grips with these bodies: something that was specific to their lowest-end consumer bodies in the DSLR range, which may say something...

    • @Duade
      @Duade  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks Trevor, yes, I believe the dock and AF settings does have an impact and I hope to try some different settings in the future. I agree the APSC eye tracking is not as good or sticky as the FF counterparts, I am unsure exactly why this is, maybe more focus points, better contrast detection, not sure. Yes the 60-600 appears a great lens that does not have a lot of reviews out there. Cheers, Duade

      Hi Joshua, I have not used the Sigma on the Sony but interesting to hear it works well. It sounds like you are heavily invested in the Canon system. Are there any third party lenses that you feel you need or are missing out on that Canon have not got covered? Cheers, Duade

    What Shutter Mode would you recommend on this Camera for Wildlife? I keep going back in forth between Electronic and Electronic First Curtain.

    • @Duade
      @Duade  11 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      It really depends on the speed of the sensor, on the R10 probably the Electronic First Curtain as you elimate rolling shutter. Cheers, Duade

    I am interested by the eye AF, and wonder if your problems with it might be related to the sensitivity settings for it? I don’t really know any way of figuring that all out other than experimentation, I suppose. It’s definitely on my list of things to explore more closely. One thing I want to say on your videos: I appreciate the raw w/processed image overlay showing the crop and edits. I know it has to take some time in production to do, but I find it very valuable.

    How did you manage to mount the Sigma contemporary on the gimbal head? Does not it rotate?
    How did you manage to balance it at 600mm with such a light camera?
    Thank you!

    • @Duade
      @Duade  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I used an arca swiss plate mounted to the bottom of the lens, this is then placed on the gimbal and locked down. The lens has a knob that allows you to turn the lens to portrait if needed. Cheers, Duade

      Thank you @Duade Paton.
      I own the same lens and the problem is it has only one screw on the foot so that it twists on the Arca Swiss plate.
      I am wondering about soldering a horizontal stop on the front part of the Arca Swiss plate to keep the foot stable...

      @@gliderwallace83 G'day I find the screws that have an allen key to lock are much more secure and can be locked down, even the ones with a screwdriver can be locked tighter. The ones that only hand tighten come lose quickly. But yes in theory once balanced your could but something to stop the sideways movement. Cheers, Duade

    Please make video on EF adapted lens performance on R7 and R10.. Currently I have a 7D2 and 400mm 5.6L Setup and thinking of selling the 7D and getting the R10 with an adapter. Would this be wise? also what do you think about battery life with a setup like this?
    Was the Sigma lens in this video adapted?

    • @Duade

      G'day Zaber, I would advise saving for the R7, I just don't think the R10 is up to it as a wildlife camera. The R7 will work well with the 400 5.6. Cheers, Duade 👍

    What would you recommend more, i have actually the RP and you probably guessed it... its not that great for wildlife.
    Im thinking about the R10 as secondary and wildlife body next to the RP which will probably keep my main camera for many years coming (The RP is basically all i need, except not that great for wildlife and especially video)
    Or i just try to get some money back by selling the RP and throw more money in for a 2nd hand R6 which will serve me then for everything. I would love the R5 with the 45MP instead the "poor" 20MP of the R6 but well i cant afford^^

    • @Duade
      @Duade  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think the R6 makes the most sense as it is far superior then both cameras and will do all things well. I know there are rumours of the R62 coming next year but we don't know how accurate that is. Cheers, Duade

      @@Duade I would hope somehow more for a R10 Mk2 which is more likely a crippled R6 or so so i can buy new instead of 2nd hand
      2k € is still a lot and i think somehow its wrong to use a 2k€ body for lenses which are worth anywhere between 100-1000€.
      Thats why i bought once the EOS RP in the first place... because it wasnt much worse than the R and much more affordable and still a huge upgrade from older APS-C DSLR.
      Im also thinking about going "back" to 2 cameras and keeping the RP, probably also with the R6 - As i said - i am 1000% fine with the RP, in fact i even prefer the small battery and very small RP at all, since it feels just like a damn compact camera (or close to with 16, 35 or 50mm prime) with good grip!
      Im wondering if the RP for most of my usecases and the R6 just for wildlife and astrophotography would be a little overkill? Instead of this i would better live with always a bigger body and just forget the RP?
      Would i lose a lot of low light capabilities with a R7 compared to my RP? Because if not, the R7 would be even a better companion than the R6 but as 2nd camera then (super high pixel density for Astrophotography, since i sold my EOS 550D i struggle a lot at deep sky objects with the RP and its huge pixels)

      @@Duade I have anyways a lot of hate on the R10... just the small buffer and slow write speeds to the SD card make me think if i really want that camera at all
      The R7 i like already more, but much too expensive for a APS-C
      The R6 is pretty ok, especially the high ISO capabilities would be a charme for my needs, not so the resolution if we keep the price in mind. (also one of the reasons i upgraded my horrible 18MP APS-C to 26MP full frame for better "cropability".
      I think i made a mistake with staying in the Canon system and add lenses for wildlife (for the RP), i should have kept Canon for all my needs and get a usable M 4/3 and a affordable telezoom for wildlife. Like this i would not even have to think about upgrading anything in the EOS R system i have already and would have a dedicated wildlife setup.
      Would even be better 2 different systems... so i can use one system for a timelapse of the main system doing astrophotography.
      If there would be only a R6 without IBIS since i dont want or need IBIS at all.

      @@Duade I have now R7 and RP, but my main wildlife lens is the RF 800 F11 (so often 1280mm is just too much)
      The RF 100-400 sounds lika a good compromise, but they are not yet on the 2nd hand market and new its too expensive yet.
      The 150-600 Sigma sounds more and more interesting since the EF 70-200 is not enough on the EOS RP to compensate for 1280mm only. R6+RF 800 was a joy, for the R7 this lens is just the "moon extender", basically for most reach in wildlife.
      With RP+ Sigma 150-600 and R7+ RF 800 (or just R7+150-600) i would have a great set to choose from without big compromises if im thinking right. RF 800 for the lightweight and sigma for the "serious" stuff.
