    This was fascinating. My guitar teacher told me to make recordings of my playing every so often because you progress so slowly you don't understand what you accomplished until you go back and listen to those 1st recordings.

      I accidentally deleted the recordings of me playing when I started, but I imagine it was absolutely horrible compared to my skill level now.

    That smile of satisfaction when you hit the chord changes or whatever part it is is what it’s all about!! Good job! Hell, when I was playing for a year I wasn’t even close to your skill level. Keep it up. The instrument will be satisfying, frustrating, glorious, infuriating and something you will never want to be without. Like a true best friend.

    Good progress. I never liked practicing things where my left hand sat still. Like barre chords. Gotta learn them, but I think coordinating both hands to one another, and learning to move your wrist, not your elbow on your right arm, are extremely important. Sometimes practicing things that are not terribly musical, like straight chromatic notes, is extremely healthy for the hands.
    All of it is good, though.
    Glad to see you are taking lessons. The language is important.
    Great job.

    One thing I like about watching beginners that have had lessons is that if there’s a simple song you haven’t bothered to learn yet and want to know the chord progression a beginner will have slower chord changes so you can learn by watching really quickly. One day I’ll get round to learning to transcribe by ear.
    Smart choice of guitar you can play anything on a telecaster. Keep enjoying what you’re doing because if you think this is fun just wait until you get to play with other musicians that are into the same music as you and going out busking with them 😎🎸👍

      +1 on the Telecaster remark. Excellent choice. And Squiers are very good instruments for the price. The custom vibe thinline tele is my favourite out of the telecaster CV line.

    Awesome progress! Hearing that pedal switch in “Smells Like Teen Spirit” was so satisfying. That fast strumming bit at eleven months was crazy! You've now have 1 true friend now, the guitar. Your progress is amazing ! I'm jealous, it took me years to be bad. I'm 60 started at 18 and I can say it's probably the only struggle I enjoy. Get an acoustic and you can drag them all over the world, they aren't as fragile as some would have you believe.
    I'm showing this to a young lady I know that's been teaching herself music, And I say Hairspray by Nirvana should replace stairway to heaven as the rock anthem...

  • @andrewalfordmuse
    @andrewalfordmuse 2 ปีที่แล้ว +7

    This was so great to watch. You reminded me what it was like to get started. The blisters, the bleeding, and miserably sore fingers were all worth it when you hit major milestones. You've made excellent progress and should be very proud of what you've accomplished. The guitar is such a versatile instrument, with so many techniques to learn and master, it'll provide a lifetime of personal growth. It's been able to give me a voice when I didn't have words, and my greatest source of therapy. I've been playing for close to 30 years and I'm still learning and still loving every minute of it. I can't wait to hear where you're at after another year!

    Knowing how cruel the internet can be, it took guts to show your progress in video form. You're doing great and showing more dedication than I did at that age. Don't let it slip and keep trying new things all the time.

  • @Sonicstillpoint83

    I had an injury which prompted me to re-learn guitar left-handed after 20 years. Your dedication is inspiring. I would encourage anyone who wants to teach music or those who have been lifelong musicians to also take up such a challenge because we can forget how truly difficult that stage is to ever come. Having fun must be the primary goal after avoiding pain and things that can cause repetitive stress injury.

    • @Sonicstillpoint83
      @Sonicstillpoint83 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The benefit is that you become an invaluable source to help anyone you know with rehabilitation and avoiding injury in the first place. I am fortunate that my jujitsu gym doesn’t have any young foolish people with aspirations of being a professional MMA fighter, but our normally very chill Jim had exposure to four weeks of wrestling with a coach who insisted that wrestling was a brutal sport. There are now three guys who sustained injuries that will follow them for months if not longer. In this day and age, so many have been seduced by the desire for Instant gratification and we forget that every new concept we learn in a discipline needs time to grow and flourish, as a seed in the ground. I remember being so confused in high school when a piano/theory teacher told me that there are no wrong notes and harmony or the cords under the melody can be anything you want, Even worse and adding infinitely more confusion was the idea that no it’s don’t have to necessarily be played in tune: The major third and major seventh always push slightly above pitch while the perfect fifth tends to be slightly flat. Well all that is true, it lacks the context that only comes from experience and experience is only gained by being placed in new and unfamiliar situations, whether they be physically or musically. Django Reinhardt changed the way that the guitar would be played because of an injury and the sound of Black Sabbath was created out of necessity because of an injury and the man who couldn’t do a single pull up or push up, Helio Gracie, revolutionized modern combat sports because he couldn’t physically perform the techniques the way his father and brother did. If we focus on what we do have so that we forget what we don’t, we will get a lot closer to success somewhere.

    Keep it up another year and you will be playing intricate solo's !! Practice is something we all have to do . After 40 years of playing I find it a little harder to find over a half hour to 1 hour of practice time. I do as much as I can it keeps me fairly sharp and keeps away most of the rust ? You should focus on using your pinky more it makes everything easier but it takes time . Good Luck and ROCK ON !!!

    You're a natural. I've seen people take 2 plus years to get to the level of comfort you have holding the instrument. Nothing wrong with a bullet tele to get going but you should give some thought into upgrading your guitar. You will be amazed at the difference in playability in something like a Fullerton asat or MIM tele that's been to a luthier.

    Great job. Tips on finding an instructor? Was it all virtual or did you go to a local music shop?

    Can you make a video on how you started? I just got an electric guitar and I don't know where to start.

    I couldn't help but smile the entire time. I picked up an acoustic a few days ago and the first few practice sessions have been miserable lol I was thinking there's no way I can figure this thing out. Fingers are hurting and I'm wondering how did I go through life not realizing how uncoordinated I am. SMH. However, this was the encouragement I needed. Thx for sharing.
