Can you do a video on how to teach a horse to lay down? Your explanations are the best 😁

I always open gates on my horse, not a problem unless the bolt is too low down! I've taught him to push the gate with his nose on cue from my leg

Almost dark and 15km from home on a 3 yo, and over a dozen gates, which all swung because Jindabyne is horse country, I got off at the first 2, then insisted we do it from the saddle, literally told the horse it would be the quickest way to get home, if he'd please co-operate. At each gate he got better, and by about the 4th one he was an expert, you can shove all these steel Aussie gates with the horse's chest. There is a definite trick to finishing and moving away. Some will assume you've got the latch/chain when they hear the rattle, so the last thing you do before moving off is give him a pat, good boy, then signal to go, that way he'll wait for the pat, not head off when he thinks he's heard the chain go on. And please, some etiquette if someone else is handling the gate! Don't ride off and leave him to cope, wait, and all go together.

I actually really love using the gate to begin to teach a horse about lateral movement. Any time I can find a job to do that allows me to teach my horse while doing it, I try to take advantage of it. I feel like a) it ups the stakes and makes me accountable for effectively teaching the horse, as we have a job we need to get done one way or another, and b) it gives the horse a why. I am not just picking on them for some reason they can't understand, there's a reason for what I am trying to teach them. A goal that requires the horse and I to work together in order to accomplish
I'll start working on opening a gate on the 2nd or 3rd ride, before I've even moved into the snaffle and am still riding in a halter. It's not going to be pretty for a bit and that's OK, but by a week or two from the day I start them, I am able to open and close gates without much issue. With all the gates around here, it's a pretty big priority for me. I view gate opening/closing as the first 'maneuver' I put on a horse.
Everyone does things a little differently :)

It's actually a really complex manouevre one handed and well worth the time perfecting all the little steps needed to achieve it. Also, quite a lot of horses have already learnt to get through a gate as quickly as possible in a straight line when their human swings it oen with a big shove- so there can be some unlearning to do, to stand still in an open gateway without worrying about it shutting on them. Really helpful. Many thanks for this.

Howdy to you in Down Under from the US. Damn, if I didn't know any better I would swear you are riding my gelding. Twins for sure. Same on the Bosal too. Looks pretty close to what I use also.

I don’t really know the way to teach a horse to disengage the hind quarters and move the front around in a turn on the haunches. That’s the part where we always break down in gate opening coz my gelding doesn’t know how. Do you have video on teaching a turn on the haunches?
