I thought this movie was more sad that scary or comedic. There were some scenes that made me laugh, but it was really sad. The Monster was sympathetic, all he wanted was a friend, and everyone treated him horrible. I get that he killed people, but in the first movie, he had no intention of killing the little girl Maria, he killed Fritz (Igor) because he was scaring him, he killed the guy played by Van Sloan because he was trying to kill him, etc. It was really sad, and made me want to hug the monster, as weird as that sounds.
What never made sense was Dr. Pretorious branding the newly created female mate "The Bride of Frankenstein", especially since Frankenstein was actually the monster's creator and not the monster itself. Well anyway thanks for sharing this video with us!
That was a great explanation you did on this subject Best horror movie ever thanks for sharing you took me right back especially when I had the monster Models back in the 60s
The "Igor" character's name is Karl played by character actor extraordinaire, Dwight Frye who also played Fritz, the hunch-back assistant to Henry Frankenstien in the original 1931"Frankenstein" film
Boris Karloff would make his final appearance as the monster in Son Of Frankenstein and although he was asked to reprise the role in other films his age and also having arthritis kept him from it, he just couldn't sit through what were hours of make up sessions anymore but did play a mad scientist in House Of Frankenstein ,and all the while several different actors have played Frankenstein's monster in other films I think Glenn Strange was the best one second to Karloff I didn't really care much for Lagosi's portrayal of the monster in Frankenstein vs The Wolfman but Karloff will always be the actor remembered for it most of all.
As much as I love this film, I still cannot say it blows the first one out of the water. James Whale's original 1931 film is a masterpiece of Gothic horror and while Whale's sequel might take a few more interesting risks and Dr. Pretorius is a truly fantastic character it's difficult for me to say it's that much better. I feel like Frankenstein has a solid and consistent build all the way through and my only beef with Bride is it has two amazing first acts that, for me at least, are better than its finale which has some wonderful moments but gets a little chaotic and rushed. But why quibble over little things, the pair make a great double feature.
Till this day I cannot watch this movie alone, it's such a horror film and I'm 62. As a kid I hated going down to the basement alone because it resembled the walls of the castle in the movie and I imagined the monster lurking in a corner waiting for me.
I think throwing in some light humor for comedy relief in such a dark movie doesn't constitute as a comedy. It would be like calling A Nightmare on Elm Street a comedy because of Freddy Krueger's puns.
It was cut by fifteen minutes because the censorship board didn't like the religious imagery in the film. That fifteen minutes has been lost which is a terrible shame.
Great video! Your reviews are always interesting even these off the cuff ones. They always make me want to watch the movie being reviewed. Even if I've already seen them. Great job! - Eli
Pretorius could have escaped too but the monster says to him ..you stay we belong dead and rather than running out the door with Henry and Elizabeth he just stands there watching as Frankie pulls down the lever.
karloff? was the best monster and of course the bride. a real horror show. i hold the first 2 karloff movies as the measuring stick for all the movies that followed.
+Phreaker1997 Sure, it still has iconic moments even though there really wasn't any music in it. I think it is only 70 minutes long so you can burn through both movies in a couple of hours.
Almost cry? I cried my eyes out when the men took the blind man away and burnt his house down On the close up of The monsters' tears. I was around 10 or 11 years old. Dr. Pretorius was funny ro me.
If you want a truly book accurate faithful adaptation of Frankenstein you should check out the 2004 Hallmark mini-series of Frankenstein. It's really good. Don't let the fact that it was by Hallmark discourage you.
I would argue that Son of Frankenstein was pretty good. It had great set decoration and Lugosi's "Igor" was probably the greatest performance of his career. But after that movie, there's really no point in continuing with the series.
mazing for 1935? are you saying your grandparents weren't equipped to appreciate these things? Do you not understand how well educated an eighth grader was in those days, or how worldly one might be by his 20's? Your generation didn't invent all this you know....

Best of the old Universal Monster films even above Dracula and Frankenstein to me. The sets the direction just amazing old studio stuff :)
*Frankenstein & Bride of Frankenstein and Halloween & Halloween II are the best*

Karloff did not want the monster to ever speak....but fortunately the director, James Whale, insisted.
But in son if Frankenstein he's silent again.

... Who tortured the monster with the fiery torch, then was horribly hanged in return.

BurrelloSubmarine even Son of Frankenstein is better than Bride of Frankenstein
I admire the German Expressionist touches and Bela Lugosi's performance, but Son of Frankenstein isn't my favorite.
Phreaker1997 I hope you're joking.
Bill Condon is a fan of James Whale and he wants to make Bride Of Frankenstein.

It's awesome that you included the 1930s Universal logo at the end of the vid.
Well I couldn't resist.
How could anyone underestimate its value?
This was really good! Dont be afraid to give us more off the cuff.
+Matt Petersen Thanks, Ill keep that in mind.
Excellent video. Thanks
you're welcome DRG342
Check out gods and monsters it's about the director of the film

Don't quit your day job....an insightful reviewer you're not
This one was done off the top of my head, look at my other videos and then talk.
He already admitted it was a quickie review, you MORONIC DOLT. I don't know who's dumber, Frankenstein, or YOU.
Don't you dare dis Sean McDougall.
The score is great in this movie
2:10 shes got "it"!
Out of all the monsters I grew up with she scared me the most
Brooks just lampooned a movie that was already a brilliant lampoon

+Eli Ruiz Jr Thanks Eli.
Nice review but you missed one element that made it great, the campy but ruthless Dr Pretorius.
Pretorius could have escaped too but the monster says to him ..you stay we belong dead and rather than running out the door with Henry and Elizabeth he just stands there watching as Frankie pulls down the lever.
The Branagh movie was a godawful abomination.

sean, do you recommend to see frankenstein (1931)?
+Phreaker1997 Sure, it still has iconic moments even though there really wasn't any music in it. I think it is only 70 minutes long so you can burn through both movies in a couple of hours.
Yeah I remember how suprised I was at how short the movie was. It really doesn't have much to it, especially after reading the book.
Almost cry? I cried my eyes out when the men took the blind man away and burnt his house down On the close up of The monsters' tears. I was around 10 or 11 years old. Dr. Pretorius was funny ro me.

i forgot how grime this was
Blowing the original 1931 Frankenstein out of the Water? Um No Not at All
I was shocked at the sexual innuendo/humor of the prolog scene. Could not believe the year was 1935.
