- Lijiang Old Town is located in the ancient city of Lijiang City, Yunnan Province, also known as Dayan Town. It is located in the middle of Lijiang Dam. It was built in the late Song Dynasty and early Yuan Dynasty (the late 13th century AD). It was listed as a world cultural heritage by UNESCO on December 4, 1997, and won the Asia-Pacific Cultural Heritage Protection Award in 2007.
The streets in the ancient city of Lijiang are built by mountains and rivers, paved with red breccia, including Sifang Street, Mufu, Wufenglou, Heilongtan, Wenchang Palace, Wang Pizhen Memorial Hall, Xueshan Academy, Wangjiazhuang Christian Church, Fang Guoyu's former residence, White Horse Longtan Temple, Gu Peter's Former Residence, Jinglian Temple, Puxian Temple, Jiefeng Building, October Literature Museum, Red Army Long March Lijiang Headquarters Memorial Hall, Lijiang Ancient Town History and Culture Exhibition Hall, Lijiang Ancient Town Xu Xiake Memorial Hall and other attractions. Lijiang is one of the second batch of approved Chinese historical and cultural cities, and one of the two ancient cities in China that successfully declared the world cultural heritage with the entire ancient city. The ancient city of Lijiang embodies the achievements of ancient Chinese urban construction, and is one of the types of Chinese folk houses with distinctive characteristics and styles.
Lijiang Old Town, from the overall layout of the city to engineering and architecture, integrates the essence of Han, Bai, Yi, Tibetan, Naxi and other ethnic groups. The ancient city of Lijiang has not been affected by the copying of the central plains city construction of Fangjiuli, Pangsanmen, Guozhong's nine longitudes and nine latitudes, and the nine tracks of the meridian. There is no regular road network and no fortified city walls in the city. In the layout of the ancient city, three mountains are used as screens and a river is connected; The pattern of Lijiang Old Town is spontaneously formed in the form of facing southeast from northwest.
The ancient city of Lijiang, with water as its core, presents a unique spatial layout of water alleys due to the flexible use of water. The density of bridges is the biggest feature of Lijiang Old Town. In terms of external shape and structure, the ancient city dwellings have combined the architectural techniques of the Han nationality in the Central Plains and the Tibetan and Bai nationalities, forming architectural techniques such as upwardly divided earth and stone walls, cascading roofs, small blue tiles, and wooden frames. , architectural art techniques and other aspects have formed a unique style. Most of the dwellings are civil structures, and the more common forms are as follows: three squares and one screen wall, four in five patios, front and back yards, and one entrance and two courtyards.

I was there with family in end-2015. Beautiful ancient town. It was bustling, lively and filled with domestic and Asian visitors. Very nice, cool weather. After Lijiang, we proceeded to Shangri La, which was rather Tibetan in culture and architecture. Very ❤️❤️❤️ beautiful!
