These kits can be scratch built with model wood and cardboard. You can buy a lot of Tichie windows and doors for $280

I built most of the FSM kits in the day, so I can speak on your ad-libbing on the build. Part of the fun of building a FSM kit is following the instructions and honoring the designer's intentions. But I guess you know best.
