How to Reupholster a Wingback Chair! PART 1: Tearing Down the Chair - Thrift Diving

- PART 1 of 10: I'm taking an upholstery class and decided to reupholster this wingback chair that I had bought years ago from the thrift store for $60. In this video, I show you how I was taught to teardown a wingback to remove the back and sides of the chair. I won't be finished this chair until closer to the end of the month. The gentleman who was teaching has such a soothing voice!
certain pieces can be removed by grasping with the pliers and doing a rolling motion ( rolling the fabric around the pliers ) instead of pulling the fabric. It's a little quicker and easier. Always remove ALL the old fabric and all the staples. Anything else is a lazy way. ( and your new cover won't go on as nice. ) Also when pulling individual staples, be careful. You can hurt yourself. Wear garden gloves to prevent blisters. Tearing down furniture is hard dirty work. Don't leave any broken staples. Pull the little pieces out with pliers or hammer it in or it will find you.
That is a nice looking chair. I would have started out slow myself removing the staples and fabric so that I could use the existing fabric as a pattern to cut the new fabric. Definitely can't wait to see the rest and the end result.
I will definitely stay tuned to see how the chair turns out, as someone who worked in the upholstery industry the process can be challenging sometimes but oh so rewarding

You are a woman after my own heart! I LOVE new challenges! I've taught myself how to make swag-and-jabot drapes, restore antique furniture, and even some construction (I've dug a drainfield, helped put on a new roof, hung and finished drywall, put in patio pavers). But, I have a great antique wing chair and an antique channel back chair that scare me to death. 😂🤣😂 So, I love your patient, clear, step-by-step tutorial. Hoping to conquer the unconquerable after watching your series of videos. And HEY--thrift stores and antique stores ROCK, especially in Florida. 😜

You can really see how faded that fabric that seems fine is when you begin to remove pieces and expose edges that haven't faded. Reupholstering my wingback since my cat ruined all of the embroidered fabric on it, using this series as a guide. Thanks for spreading your knowledge!

I like that you are using a ferrier tool to pull out that fabric! Those pliers are used to cut horse hooves and take out the tacs from a horse's shoes! Perfect for this job!
I've reupholstered an antique chair with the wood arms as shown in the video. That's really easy to do. But I've never had the guts to reupholster a wing chair.
Hey, Anne! Yeah, a wing chair is like The GrandDaddy of Reupholstered Furniture. hahaha. I decided that this would be the best chair while under the guidance of someone who knows what they're doing. After doing this chair, I feel I could do nearly ANYTHING, so the skills will be quite valuable. I have an Ethan Allan sofa that I'll do next!

That's awesome Serena!!! ... i volunteered at an upholstery shop a few years ago just to learn how to do that, i also learned how to strip stain off wood and repair wooden furniture... it is so much fun and i can tell you like it too!!!
What a great experience, Maria! How long did you get to volunteer for? I remember stopping at a shop once asking to volunteer and I felt like they looked at me like I was crazy! LOL. Do you do a bunch of projects now?
Well done! I can't wait to see the fabric you choose. Top tip: don't throw out the fabric you removed! Use a template for new fabric. (I am sure You know this already as you are a pro!)

I really do love chairs like the wing back. I just think they're stunning, comfortable, and cozy.

Yeah, it's a shame it was so faded. I was telling hubby that I wanted to rip off the rest of the fabric and he was like, "No, just cover it up to save money! If you think it's dirty, steam clean it!" So, I'll likely keep the inside part on, but you'll get to see that in upcoming videos! I'm sure it's comfy. But it's been too dirty for me to even ATTEMPT to sit on it. HAHAHA
Thrift Diving Yeah, saving money is important. But I'd be like you and wanting all the old fabric ripped off. Lol. But, at lease you'll know how to just cover up some fabric on a chair to save more money/cut small corners.
But yes, I wouldn't have sat on that chair either. 😆

The shape of the wings and cabriole on the legs makes me think this is a "Centennial Chair." They were produced in the 1870's and '80's in honor of the War for Independence and The Constitution. I have a pair that I bought about 30 years apart. Beautiful chairs...

LOL, and you didn't have to pay a dime! :) The class was actually pretty affordable at $299 for 6 sessions (4 hours each session). 24 hours of upholstery for $299! Can't beat that!

You totally can, Denisse! Try some classes, and do some tests on smaller pieces until you feel more comfortable with it! :)

LOL, Caron, I know! I couldn't believe it took me so long today just to remove the sides and back! The instructor was very quick with his removal! Me?? Slow as heck! LOL

You got it!! You should have seen me when I got to class--my stupid phone has 20% battery and cut off on me! So I left class, went to my car for a conference call, and charged my phone just so I could take pictures and video to do this video! LOL. I agree! The fabric was reeeeaaalllly pretty, just so faded. I had some fabric I was going to use, but I feel like I should get new fabric that might be more neutral and less trendy. I'll keep you posted on what I decide to use! :) Thank you for following along!!!!

Yes, girl, rip that stuff off! I felt like a bad*ss by the time I was done. You should have seen me when I was removing the staples from the bottom dust cover. I was going all slow and removing EACH ONE, and the instructor was like, "no, no, just rip it." lol. I have always thought to remove it gently to keep the pieces to use to make the next pattern, but the instructor said he will teach me how to measure. Or rather, I should say, teach US to measure. LOL. Because you are going to learn, too! :)

I see the color difference , that was a great looking chair pre fading I had 2 great large Sam Moore wing chairs in a flame stitch, ( light colored flame stitch) but the fabric worn out and between fabric and labor it was just too much and they went away, sadly . Loved those chairs

It really was, Corry! I had NOOO idea how to get started, but the instructor made it clear that you remove it in layers based on what's covering up what. So starting at the bottom, the dust cover came right off....then the bottom cording...then the back...It was easy once I got started! :)

Thank you!! My hair was wet in the beginning, but at the end, they're dry. I actually thought my hair looked good at the end, too, because I can actually SEE the highlights I had gotten earlier this year. They're so slight that I barely see them! :)

Try a smaller light weight pair of pincers, also a tight fitting pair rubber gloves like gardeners use. Also maybe an old chisel and mallet

I have two Lane wing back chairs, one is a recliner (my FAVORITE) that I got for free (yes, I curb crawled these). They are in desperate need of reupholstering. One I've put a slipcover on for now; the recliner has been a little more difficult to find a slipcover for at a reasonable price. These are great chairs with excellent "bones"; well worth recovering in my book. I've had one quote from an upholstery shop of $350, plus material. You make this look so easy (I especially like the "just rip it off" part! I'm really good at that!); I am tempted to try. Almost. I did notice that those staples and tacks tend to fly around. If doing at home, would laying a tarp down first make it easier to clean up?
Carol, /the labor is a bargain for wing chairs. Doing reupholstery work is HARD Work. A sharpened tack puller works good on staples if you don't have proper tools.
$350 in labor is cheap, just find some deal on fabric. I wanted to get my big Sam Moore wing chairs redone, but when I found a fabric that I knew would look great on them, and found out it was $100 a yard, I decided I needed to find new chairs, but never found anything that sat as well at those

Take pictures as you remove the layers, so you can remember what order things were.

Good luck with it! I still never finished the cushion and refinishing the feet! I have moved on to other projects, so I need to come back to it. Try to get it done all in one go. This one took me FOREVEERRRRR. :)
What is that first tool she used called??
I keep putting off reupholstering 10 parsons chairs. 6 0f them have tufted buttons. 4 0f them have rolled backs and skirts. I'm overwhelmed. The fabric for the 6 chairs are 20.99 a yard. The 4 chairs with the rolled backs and skirts are. 18.99 a yard. Too expensive. That's why I'm not motivated, but, I love love the fabric.

Thanks, Melissa! Nope, I don't sell anything I do. I used to have a booth for a short 6 months but the work involved was not worth the reward! LOL. I think I need a bigger house so I can keep doing projects!
