    In Brazil, before asking for directions, you have to say "Hi! Excuse me. Good morning/afternoon/evening. Sorry to interrupt (whatever you're doing). Can you tell me...?" The most important is "good morning/afternoon/evening" before anything. Hahaha! I hate this. Nobody is wishing you any good part of the day. it's just a formula to show how polite you are. Of course there are exceptions to everything. Great lesson. You said it's for beginners, but sometimes we're so focused on advanced vocab and skip very useful information. Thank you! @@silviomp as an English teacher in Thailand there are formal ways of speaking in our language and informal . My mother being Thai , I was raised speaking Thai and English .
      Every society has it's tweeks . Yes , we are very formal here in Thailand . All of my students 7 - 40 years of age will bow to me at the beginning and end of class .

      @@stevejaenghan5589 Yeah, it's like a religion. If you don't do it, you might be "stoned." Human beings love formality, it makes them feel better, and they will do it even if they don't like you because it's not about being genuinely nice, but following the rules.

      Sorry, Silvio... But you don't need to sound bitter when telling that in Brazil greetings( good morning, etc) are a mechanic talk. Maybe you only had met people in a hurry or bad mood. We usually are friendly. Have you forgotten that?

      Read a lot. Specially drama books and so forth. I also suggest you to have a native penfriend to talk to usually. It could help.

    • @silviomp
      @silviomp 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well, I tell my brain I'm not speaking another language, it's still my first language and it's all synonyms for the words I already speak. Repeat every new synonym out loud over and over again until it becomes natural, until you feel what you mean. Do in English exactly as you do when you learn a new word in your first language. Don't ask questions like "why this word comes first?" Just pretend you're a native child and accept the way words appear in a sentence. Children love repetitions and learning new stuff. They even ask you to tell them the same story, the same joke. Their favorite word is "again." Don't learn English, live English. If you can't move to a English speaking country, try to do everything in English where you are. Wake up in English, brush your teeth in English, take a dump and flush the toilet in English. Watch movies, series, home videos on TH-cam. The "magic" doesn't happen overnight. Repeat every new word/phrase/idiom/sentence until you feel like it's your native language. Do it everyday and you'll see the results.
