- Dic nobis Maria by Heinrich Scheidemann (based on a motet by Giovanni Bassano) performed by Ben Bloor in a live concert on the 29 stop 2000/2010 Richards, Fowkes & Co. Op. 10 organ of the First Lutheran Church in Boston MA on Sunday 18th June 2023.
Heinrich Scheidemann (c.1591-1663) was taught the organ by Jan Pieterszoon Sweelinck and was one of the pioneers of the North German Organ School. He took over from his father as organist at Hamburg's Katharinenkirche in 1625, which housed one of the largest organs in Germany at the time.
'Dic nobis Maria' is a transcription (or intabulation) of the Eastertide choral motet of the same name by Giovanni Bassano. The text poses a question to Mary, asking what she has seen - she proclaims that she can attest to the resurrection of Christ on Easter Sunday. Scheidemann responds to this joyful text with an appropriately lively and decorative setting of Bassano's original material.

Thank you - as always, but particularly this morning, because we need MUCH MORE SCHEIDEMANN ... and Scheidt and Weckmann and Praetorius and Sweelinck and Frescobaldi and Froberger and Muffat and...
I confess to being new to the music of Heinrich Scheidemann, so many thanks for this exuberant introduction, Ben. 'Dic nobis Maria' really sparkles on the glorious Richards, Fowkes & Co. Op. 10 Organ at the First Lutheran Church in Boston: bravo!
anyone who says music from this era is a dirge hasn't heard Scheidemann bravo Ben.
