- Richard is a tiny living addict. After building a 250 sq ft tiny house on wheels, he decided that he want to travel more freely. That’s when he converted his Honda Element into a car camper, maximized for stealth camping. Then after five months and 13,500 miles, Richard upsized into luxurious 54 sq. ft. off-grid micro house. It combines the best of tiny house living and car camping. At 6’ wide, 10’ long and less than 9’ high, it can easily be towed by most small SUVs and fit in virtually any driveway.
Through all of his simply living experience, Richard has become a minimalist travel guru who loves intimately experiencing new places and people.

why is price or cost of build rarely revealed on these things?
I miss my Element. I lived in it for 6 months and traveled 25000 miles.

@@TinyHouseExpedition thank you for the reply. I too love the story, but the details are important to us who want try and live that life style. Not to look on with envy but to remember as inspiration. They did it, I can do it too.
Yes, details can often be helpful to others but a lot depends on how you do it and what you want to get out of it. So costs won't always be the same for everyone for various reasons and sometimes not even in the same ballpark... Limiting the relevance to others and so shouldn't be entirely relied on as a guide.
While another aspect to consider is people also don't always like to broadcast what it cost them to other people and there can be other things left out because of privacy, fear of being criticized because there's a lot of cruel and judgemental people online, etc.
Even someone like Jay Shaffer, which you would think most people would respect, has gotten negative comments. So, understandable that some people just don't want to deal with that sort of thing and expose themselves more than they feel comfortable doing...
Yes, it can be frustrating when details are lacking but there are other ways to figure out that kind of information and often in the process you will find information you may not have been able to find out otherwise because your situation may require information that doesn't apply to others and thus wasn't something they factored when explaining what and how they did it...

Hotel parking lots are a good (and safe) place to stay if you are stealthy enough.
I lived out of my SUV for years, at first it was due to a sudden financial situation. But it did not take very long to discover the joy of being rent free. I quickly realized without the expense of an apartment or utilities I could go from working 7 days a week to 3 days a week and still have enough money for all my expenses. My 4Runner had a Yacama carrier on the roof which i used to store all of the necessities for a living. I have a small rear tow trailer, that held my Honda EU2000 generator. Inside I had a small stand up air conditioner which would run directly off of my generator which in turn would keep my car ice cold and extremely hot days. And in 2 large Tupperware containers next to my 6 foot long extremely comfortable bed, held all the equipment I needed for cooking food. And the other for dry goods. And a large ice cooler for my cold food. I had a very similar system to yours with the curtains which allowed me to live in my vehicle completely undetected for years without a single knock on my window. My curtains were a little different than yours, I always kept the front of my vehicle sparkling clean free of any debris which may give an indication of somebody living in a vehicle. And in the back windows you could not see in either. My sunroof and rear window had magnetic screens that fit around the frame so I can open these at night time and have fresh air. As I said earlier I did this for financial reasons at first. And then became addicted to living a life of pleasure not slavery to possessions or an apartment. The most obvious difficulty in this lifestyle was knowing that you cannot attract a woman to be your partner under the circumstances. But that’s what hotels are for. But I was getting old anyway and I am now 57. With all the money I have saved living like this I was able to buy a cabin in the woods in the Georgia mountains. I still live a very simple life and require very little. If I can go back in time I will tell my younger self to pursue this lifestyle. This kind of life isn’t for everyone but if it is something you can do it was great reward in living it. Best of luck to you, and hats off to your adventures that await you.

My name is Greg Savage I own a motorsport dealership in Connecticut so I need a very large powerful truck as you would imagine but I bought one of these a few years ago and I must say it was the most useful funnest vehicle I've ever owned. Mine was a stick shift and I did everything with that it even pulled my 16 foot boat like it was, biggest mistake Honda made was to discontinue that vehicle because it was a Swiss army knife don't ever sell that thing it is unreplaceable LOL,, and I really really love your videos by the way

This build encapsulates all the beneficial aspects of comfortable, outdoor living.
The skylight/roof access port is masterfully incorporated, and the rooftop seating platform is truly inspired!
Likewise the rear kitchen hatch, serving multiple purposes simultaneously and ergonomically.
Human beings need the ability to stand upright in their homes, and that too has been accounted for.
Some may call this minimalist, but there's nothing minimal about having a full size bed with an exceptional skylight, a fully functioning, hygienic toilet, electric sockets, full standing height, full sized kitchen with weather protection (the shower curtain will also act as a rain protecter).
This wonderful travel cabin has so many intelligently designed aspects that at first glance some may be overlooked, but it's really worthwhile to take in the details that make this so unique.
The builder has created a unique travel cabin that's elegantly simple and simply elegant!

I own a 2005 Honda Element which I LOVE!! 255,000 miles and counting. I have driven it multiple times from CT to Nebraska.
I'm surprised they discontinued them.
An interesting build with very clever aspects!
By having the roof ridge line directly above the walkway maximises headroom whilst keeping the overall height relatively low for towing travel purposes.
The skylight/escape hatch is inspired and makes great use of the roof for living purposes, great daylight transfer and beautiful night time gazing.
Whilst the full width kitchen was interesting, the counter top appeared to be unreasonably low, requiring considerable stooping to use, especially the sink, the tailgate offered great sunshade and weather protection for the user.
The interior looked really quite lovely, a genuine compact Travel Cabin with sufficient storage, facilities and space in such a small overall footprint.
This is a particularly nice design and layout which should appeal to a broad range of people.

My 2010 EX automatic 4wd has a 2.5 liter 4 cylinder .. 1500 lbs tow capacity.. I think this was the rating on all models... No v6 was offered..

This is pretty amazing....something like this could be a plan for lots of young people starting out...they could save $....if they needed to change jobs..take their home with them...being slaves to a 30 year mortgage is not for everyone...I think if I had it to do over I’d do something like this...make life an adventure!

He's really good at explaining things. He' seems to be going through a traveling adventure faze or maybe he will always want to travel but, either way, there's nothing wrong with that.
Best build I’ve seen! Love the use of space. I prefer an outdoor kitchen like that. Hate the cooking smells stuck inside.

Lovely I am not a fan of outdoor kitchens but the cover makes a difference.
I bought a net a few weeks ago.. to put on the ceiling of my Honda CR-V which I travel and camp in. I am still trying to figure out how to keep the net up.. I will be using it to store my reflectix window coverings in. It was good to see how he had done his, now I can try again.

Omg cork top sink, & the floor treatment (drawing book pages)! When I first saw this guy's step, I thought it was a bit iffy--the corrugated metal is open to the elements at the corners of the tiny house--looks prone to water damage quite a bit. And he didn't do the usual neatening up that I'm used to in these vids, but it looks like it was a curbside interview, kind of off the cuff. By now I'm real impressed.

The micro-tiny houses are actually the true tiny houses. Interesting why they make tiny homes so many times bigger. Either way it's all interesting.
Combination of profit (more cost to make margin on) and market reach.
There are a lot of people who would enjoy tiny living (as in, modern 'tiny' basically 200-400 square feet) that want no part of micro (OG tiny) living.
I just love seeing these young and old people marching to the beat of their own drum...building their own lives on their own terms...
How to spot any "stealth" camper ...look for blackened windows and solar on the roof.
Everybody's doing the same...
But cool and easy going dude and great tiny house build.
The same? Not always, as "Stealth" campers don't always have windows or they may be covered or mirrored or just made to look like a commercial vehicle.
Besides, "stealth" campers aren't the only vehicles to use blackened windows.
They also won't always have solar and may just use power from the vehicle alternator to charge a battery bank or have a different solution or really keep it basic and live without electrical power... Or even with solar the panels may be hidden from street view or only come out when boon docking...
There's also different types of stealth... Some use vehicles, often previously used commercial vehicles, but others may use trailers or even shipping containers and the level of stealth can vary from fairly easy to spot to those you will only know when going inside of them or when the door is open...

Add a hidden entrance and with that back hatch closed there would be no outward sign that it is anything but what it appears...
@@ZeoCyberG you are absolutely right. The one on the picture is true stealth. I am referring to the handful of builds I've seen on youtube - all doing the same with tinted windows and solar.

This is one of the cutest set ups I’ve ever seen! I’m amazed at the creativity of these people and all the others who design their own amazing tiny homes!!!
Look up DoorRods. you can fabricate one out of some steel if you dont want to buy one. It will click into your rear hatch latch and the ring on the bottom where it latches to. make it like 2feet long and you wont need that rope to keep your hatch open a little for air. and you can use your bug net easier.

The kitchen is going to take up the same amount of interior space whether it faces indoors or out. If you could work from both sides and have access to your kitchen while indoors that would be so much more user friendly especially in bad weather. But overall. ...great space for 1.
Maybe you could use your car for strictly your bedroom and your trailer for all other living just put a cover over your hatch and the front door of the trailer to make it one cohesive space 😊 Just an idea. Take care.💖
Made in Michigan 67 I think you gain space from the entire outdoors when you turn it the direction he did. It is a major drawback to have to cook in bad weather, but outdoor kitchens are as old as civilization. There are some positives as well.
@@sww4390 I'm 51 and have had the privilege to begin outdoor life as a little girl thanks to my mom. We are avid outdoors people and have camped all over this country in every way there is. All I said was the space that his design took up of his living space that it would have been nice to see it have been useful from indoors and out.
There is nothing wrong with getting out of the elements or resting from a sudden illness indoors if need be or if passing through an area for 1 day to not have to open up your entire trailer to cook.
Anyways thanks for your input and I hope you remember that everyone has a right to an opinion different from yours. It doesn't make either one more right than the other now does it?

Understand, everyone has a right to their opinion but this includes opposing opinions and it should only be a issue if it is not done in a civil and respectful manner...
While the free exchange of ideas includes debating them. So there's nothing wrong with having different opinions but so too is there nothing wrong with challenging opinions when there are disagreements...

@@sandragray4598 Hi Sandra, I also took zero offense to Sam's explanation of how he saw the design. My point was just to say that it would have been nice to see the inside used as well as the outside is all.
Most outdoor kitchens usually take up half the depth this one did. I love cooking outdoors and in our own homebuilt tiny home we have a great one. But knowing how intense our weather can be across the country at any given time I just think it's useful to get to your kitchen from inside as much as the outside. His design would not have lost anything by making every inch used for multi tasks. I too am grateful I had the mom I did. I lost her last Jan to Dementia and I still have not recovered.

hands free showering wastes water when you are already on a finite amount of stored water. use what you need to wet, soap and shampoo up, then rinse off.

But that would just add more "stuff" to a person who just said he realizes his SPACE is far more valuable to him than the stuff that occupies it, so why would he want to burden himself with things he'd find unnecessary???

I just got inspired!! My first ”RV” is a 20’ Toy Hauler. I kind of got pressured into getting it bc my “partner” loved it 🤨 bc it was in such good shape for its age (first owner was an engineer!).
Since the purchase I’ve found all kinds of things I don’t like about it...the elevating bunk takes all my strength to get down (previous owner never used it). It’s too close to the ceiling, I can’t sit up. There’s absolutely no storage - it’s a weekend warrior toy - not a full-time home, which is what I was looking for.
So it just sits in storage. Sure I’ve used it....but my creativity has been stumped....I have a creative block as to how to improve it!
In fact, at one point I actually purchased a great 7’ table from IKEA to replace one of the couch/beds in order to use as my workspace. But I’m so disinterested I don’t want to do anything to it in case I want to get rid of it...I’m in limbo...I dream of getting an upgrade.
But after watching your video I’ve felt the stirrings of imagination wanting to “make it work”!
I love how you’ve kept your budget low for your builds....you build around your finds.
The reason I got a toy hauler is bc of all the empty space I can use for all my art spupplies! I love creating & where I live now has absolutely no work-space whatsoever!
After seeing how little space you make work for you, perhaps I can make it work...

Sooooo the big question is, does he use the Element to tow his little trailer? The Elements have 4 cylinders and a tow cap of 1500 lbs.....
Good point. He sold his Element after completing the micro and upgraded to something with more towing capacity.

Honestly, not one of the best Honda Element builds, I’ve seen, but it is very economically done, so that’s a bonus. More intriguing is the little trailer. Nice skylights and roof deck. Curious as to the weight. Noted the metal framing which makes for a lighter build. Can it be pulled by the Honda Element? Definitely got that impression, and awesome if so!
Great question! He actually had to trade out his Element for an SUV with higher towing capacity. The T3 weighs 2400 lbs, loaded.
