Not ADHD related but I recently read an article about how in the tv show criminal minds Spencer Reid is supposed to be the ‘autistic one’ yet Aaron Hotchner shows significantly more autistic traits. I’d be interested to see some kind of analysis of the two characters and the idea of autism verses actual autism.

I have a child with ADHD. When we joined the waiting list on the NHS we were told the current wait is 3-4 years. We went private because she'll be in high school by then. But private therapy is £90 per session. And there are other diagnostic assessments she needs that are more money I don't have. It's a real sad state of affairs that the NHS is so underfunded that vulnerable children can't get the support they need in a timely manner 😢 Love your video though! 😊😊😊

Unfortunately it's not just the NHS. It's the same way in Canada actually. It's what happens when we have "free healthcare" (in quotes because nothing is free even if you don't pay up front you pay with taxes or even worse if rely on donations) or "Healthcare for all". When you socialize medicine people will goto the er or see the doctor over every little thing. Got a sniffle? Goto the doc. Paper cut? Twist your ankle a bit? Goto the doc. It ends up creating a massive back log of people trying to get in. Then people like you who need to get a child in and are on a sort of deadline (school starting) end up being screwed by insane waiting lists. It's a downside we see in all socialized medicine so you aren't alone!

      @helenzebcharles ปีที่แล้ว +10

I am more of the mind that it is underfunded than overused but I do know what you mean. There is a lot of misuse. But that applies more to emergency care than things like outpatient clinics.

In Germany I could get a diagnosis as an adult within about one year but for me it helped that I kind of knew I had it way before that. The diagnosis is important and gives you the confidence to say that you have it really although you knew it all along.
But I think if you are a parent you can help your child even before getting a diagnosis. There are a lot of resources online and here on youtube. If you as a parent inform yourself you can do a lot for your child. To feel heard and seen by a parent and not invalidated I personally think is one of the most important things. My mom told me as a child that we are a bit different but that is okay. And that mindset has helped me a lot to accept myself even though people tell me I cannot do this, I should not do that etc. I am a lot more forgiving to myself than other ADHDers because I do not try to conform to "normality", because I grew up with a parent that told me it is okay to be different.

15:57 this bit here about how non diagnosed learning difficulties can cause people to be labeled as a bad student really hit for me because when i was just in year two i had a parents evening and the teacher flat out said i was very lazy to my parents because of my hand writing and reading wasn't great (thankfully my dad knew i was working very hard even at home and kicked off at her) about 2 years later i got diagnosed with dyslexia and it all made more sense.

Same diagnosis here and only got it at 32 years old. I relate to the board game thing so much!! And card games rules all of these I just instantly drift away no matter how hard I try to focus. If there are more than 3 rules it’s game over for me I am just not playing.

I’m not diagnosed but I am positive I have adhd. I’m also positive my dad has adhd and we have a lot of overlap in traits (getting distracted, not being able to focus on more than one thing a lot of the time etc). There are also ways we are different, like how a lot of the time he prefers to be on the go and doing things otherwise he feels a bit useless, where as I struggle to get myself to do things despite how desperately I want to get something done. This also results in me doing things very last minute in such a panic. I want to try and get a diagnosis so badly but it also gets in the way of me actually trying to take that step to start the process. I also know it can be more difficult for women to get a diagnosis and I don’t want to be told everything is fine even though I know it’s not.

Hello! Fellow adult female ADHDer here. I'm not sure what the healthcare is like where you live, but if you are in a position to choose what kind of provider to see, I highly recommend going to a prescribing mental health provider as opposed to something like a primary care physician (a prescribing provider, but not a mental health specialist) or a counselor (a mental health specialist, but not a prescribing provider). I wasted months trying to convince people that I didn't have an anxiety disorder or depression or whatever else they wanted to convince me I had, but the moment I got in a room with a real psychiatrist, he was pretty much like, "Yeah, you obviously have ADHD. Let's get you treated." You cannot imagine the difference treatment makes. The ability to turn _a desire to do something_ into actually _doing something_ is so incredibly powerful. I know it's hard to get started. It took me years. Don't give up trying! I promise it is so worth it. ♥️

I have ADHD (diagnosed at age 28 or 29 in the 90's) and I always related to Luke and Phil. Also, Hal and Dewey in "Malcolm in the Middle". I don't think it was ever discussed in the latter show but it was clearly the intention of some very likely ADHD writers.

I saw a Documentary called Journey into Dyslexia and it made me cry. So many of these adults were bullied by their teachers and parents for being dumb. They thought they were dumb. This happened to my cousin. He joined the army and became a great team leader because he recognized people had learning differences. The documentary talked about all the new tools they have for younger generations to learn. It also said 30% of people with dyslexia become artists and entrepreneurs because they think outside the box and relate to the world in a different way. It was really interesting.

Diagnosed in... 2010, I think? Every depiction of ADHD that ultimately boils down to "SQUIRREL!" rings utterly hollow to me and can be really frustrating when that's the public's go-to shorthand for the condition.
Reality rejects simplicity, naturally, but the truth is so much more complex and intriguing, in my opinion! Always appreciate a nuanced discussion of the topic. 😊💕

In a previous video on ADHD about a year ago, you addressed basically all the pet peeves I have about media portrayals of ADHD (and some just general ADHD pet peeves) that I had left in a previous comment. I was delighted, but I was unwell at the time so I didn't comment on that video to say thank you, and then the year got away from me. So I will do it here since it's thematically relevant - thank you!! So much! I felt very seen, and I hope other ADHDers did too. And thank you for continuing to mythbust and approach discussions about ADHD with sincerity when it's often the butt of a joke in media. This topic wasn't the main reason I watch your channel, but I'm always delighted when it comes up. Happy ADHD Awareness Month :)

I’m a woman that was diagnosed with inattentive ADHD when I was 36. I got my complex ptsd diagnosis a decade earlier and only pursued adhd diagnosis after a decade of trauma therapy successfully addressed my ptsd symptoms but didn’t address my start/finish difficulties (among many other symptoms), and had significant improvement with stimulant medications. After the ADHD diagnosis, I also landed on a co-morbid PMDD diagnosis, which explains A LOT about the cyclical issues I had pre-medication AND post medication (as ADHD meds aren’t as affective in the luteal phase). Now that attempts to treat and track all of that is underway, I’m realizing that I’m also a “high functioning”/high-masking autistic woman, and I can track those symptoms back to childhood, now that I know what to look for thanks to more attention being paid to how autism presents in women. I’m about to turn 40, and I wish there was more known about all of these things and how they present in girls back in the 80s & 90s, as the trajectory of my life would have been much different and I’d be suffering less now as an adult.
Thank you for your channel and content.
I’d love to see you make a video about PMDD and pre-menstrual exacerbation of existing disorders.

Just recently found this channel and it's really great! Right when covid hit (literally same month) i started to see a psychologist and around the same time a psychiatrist. For a few years my anxiety and depression was just worse and worse that i could barely function. I knew i had to get properly diagnosed so on my own i set up the psychologist appointment (im in the US). It wasn't easy finding one that did testing and took my insurance but finally did. After several weeks of testing i was diagnosed with Generalized anxiety disorder, depression, adhd inattentivenesss, and a math deficiency. I really never saw any life change from covid.. More like everyone starting to experience my life lol. Now After years of therapy, medication, and exercise im starting to have days without GAD. Its a huge change. Now just gotta tackle the up n down anxiety that's started. But feels more like my body being so used to anxiety is going through growing pains as it adjusts. But hey that's my story

I know it's not the main purpose of this video, but I really want to thank you for including the portion explaining anankastia! Your explanation of the symptoms, thought processes, and behaviors associated with that resonated with me deeply. Now several months, many long discussions with my therapist, and one neuropsychological evaluation later, I have my official diagnosis for OCPD! Unsurprisingly, I did not think that certain behaviors and thought patterns I had were abnormal or extreme until nearly all my life experiences lined up perfectly with not only the definition you gave in this video, but all other phychological and psychiatric educational sources I found. Just having that perspective has greatly helped me start to question my thought patterns and rethink my reactions.

I was diagnosed with ADHD in 9th grade. The current theory (in my family) is that I get it from my maternal gene (my maternal cousin also has it). So hard to get meds for it right now in the US. Definitely underdiagnosed. Especially in women. Like myself. I was also very smart and did well in school, so when my mom tried, they told her I didn't have it....well, thinking back to my childhood...how did no one think of this? How did no one even think to suggest it to me until I was in my thirties. All the self esteem issues I had and still have would not be there. I didn't get straight A's. I did a mix of B's and A's and constantly was told how I was not fulfilling my potential with procrastination and lack of detail. I just always struggle with the "what could my academic achievement have been otherwise?" if I had accommodations. Although, its also challenging at work too when you finally ask for them. Even the ones they agree to at work are sometimes disregarded entirely.
Not the healthiest train of thought since I can't change the past, but it has had a profoundly negative result in my life and I really hate having it.

I got my ADHD diagnosis when I was 21, so a little over two years ago after I had a rather bad depressive episode. I wasn't a bad student, I was early for a few milestones (speaking fluently at 14 months and learning to read/write at 3), was a good exam taker, learned a second language at age 4, and even though I had very pronounced issues with meeting deadlines and handing in assignments, it hadn't been suggested. I spent my whole school life trying and failing to meet the expectations that I should have been able to reach. In secondary school, I started suspecting I may be ADHD but couldn't do anything about it.
Fast forward until now, I'm getting officially evaluated, and apparently, I'm most likely AuDHD.
Being undiagnosed for so long make things unnecessarily difficult. Even more than having it already is.

My husband has all of the ADHD! He was never diagnosed, but displayed all the common symptoms and problems as a child. He has basically reigned himself in by writing everything he does down in a planner, even the things he does regularly. This also fuels his hyperactivity, because he's always looking for something to do, when he has finished one task he goes looking for another.
I brought the possibility of ADHD up to him and he has by now accepted that he has it. However, he sees no reason to seek treatment because his system works for him in his eyes.

But I can't get treatment or assessment for it because I'm diagnosed with depression, which is in many ways worsened by my inability to get help for my ADHD... Even if I got a referral right now it would take over 2 years to get my first appointment, and they might just turn me away without seeing me, because "You had depression 2 years ago (at the time of referral)".

    • @randomname24680
      @randomname24680 ปีที่แล้ว +7

In psychiatry we create categories, because it's easier to study, but in real life mental health is a question of spectrum and nuances, not boxes. So all mental health disorders have a common criteria : the symptoms need to be a source of suffering and/or dysfunction. If someone has a short attention span and high energy and it isn't a source of issues in their life because it's not super intense, or it's flexible, or they have a gold ability to cope with its effects, it's not a disorder. If it's invasive, tiring, debilitating, then it's a problem, and this problem potentially meet the criteria of ADHD (other neurological or psychiatric issues might have these specific symptoms as well though).

I have autism and adhd and live in america. I am dfab and was born in the early 90s when both autism and ADHD were primarily only diagnosed in dmab people because of outdated sexist ideas in medicine at the time mixed with there not being enough research done on either conditions at that point. I as a result got a ton of other not quite accurate diagnoses and didn't get accurate diagnoses or medical care as a result til I managed to get a proper diagnosis as a 28 year old adult
I share this because i struggled a lot growing up without proper medical care and I hope my story will help people think twice about harmful gender stereotypes when considering diagnosis of ADHD and Autism and all disorders really.

I have few relatives who as kids and teens were diagnosed with ADHD.. but later in life it was discovered they all also have bipolar, some have type 2 others have type 1... 2 of them during teenage years also had eating disorders and phases of gender dysphoria in manic phases... Kinda wired how some things are connected and manifest differently in different biological life stages...

My dad is incredibly smart but will always label himself as dumb and wasn't a "good student". I genuinely think if he had been a kid today - and didn't have my grandparents for parents - he would have a diagnosis of something. Not a professional, don't know what it is. Though I was diagnosed ADHD Inattentive as an adult...

What kind of insanity is it to not put a kid on medication as soon as possible. There is very good evidence that medication, plus structured home and school life, can make the ADHD to become non clinical by adulthood. My understanding is that current rec's in the US is starting a child by the age of 4 on medication.

I was diagnosed with ADHD as a child. However as an adult I figured out I was moderately deaf. So, no I do not have ADHD, I am just hard of hearing.

So TECHNICALLY speaking neither Van Goth nor Van Goh are correct. He was Dutch, so technically it's Van Go[French phlegm noise]. Also, doctor, why do you think ADHD surfaces and causes the most problems 9 times out of 10 in schools/ college/ uni?

Neurodivergent teacher here (both myself and my students) answering your question. The structure, expectations and lack of flexibility in schools etc tend to cause a lot of problems., whereas before this and in adulthood more flexibility to needs can occur. Although not always. A lot of adults struggle in the workplace too.

It might be underdiagnosed in the UK, but in the US where the medication is crazy expensive, and a decent amount of doctors get deals from pharma companies, it absolutely is over diagnosed. My wife worked in a pharmacy for 7 years, and she knew multiple doctors by name that almost every patient of theirs would be prescribed adderall.
However, it is also underdiagnosed (and yes, it can be both). A lot of children that have no need for adderall on are on, meanwhile a lot of children that need adderall (especially young women who show different symptoms of ADHD) are not. It's not black and white.
