    This is really helpful, and I was able to get my iMac to work as a second display for my Macbook. Question for you - when I plug my Macbook in to charge, it kicks off as a second display. I'm not able to get it to work again until I unplug from charging. Anyone else have this issue? Solutions?

    I was trying to do something like this with my MacBook Air M1 and 2013 iMac. I just realized tonight I can just use Mission Control and the built in Mac screen sharing to complete something similar. Just turn on Mission Control on your Apple Silicon device. Connect to your iMac via screen sharing. Put the iMac screen share in full screen. Now you can 3 finger swipe between the two screens and control your iMac with your MacBook trackpad. Both computers are running at the same time but it's like having dual monitors. You can also transfer files between the two devices or create more virtual desktops to swipe through. Another option is to add a second monitor to either computer and use the same setup if you prefer to use the MacBook closed. Free no cables or apps to download. Can also add iPad in side car mode to the M1.

    For everyone who owns more recent iMac Retina display the cable solution WON'T work. But you can do it using a tiny device called "Luna Display" which cost the same as those 2 cables. I'm not sponsored or anything :-) I just try to find videos about it, videos that show clearly if this devide works or not but each time I end up with youtuber using the cable method with too old iMac as an exemple...
    Mine is 2015 Retina 27" iMac and Luna display seems to be the best solution so far. It requires a good wifi connection apparently but I cannot find out how good.
    Maybe Jaime can test this for us :-)
    Hope this can help!

    I have a 27" iMac (mid 2010) and I bought this cable on Amazon: (vienon 6FT USB C to Mini DisplayPort Cable, 4K@60Hz Type C(Thunderbolt 3/4) to Mini DisplayPort Cable Compatible with iPhone 15,MacBook Pro/Air/iMac/Mac Mini/Surface etc (Not for Thunderbolt 1/2)). It worked perfectly. I'm able to now use my iMac as an extended display or mirror my MacBook Pro display.

    Here's a better script you should have opened the video with: "For anyone interested in making their macbook pro an external display on their iMac, BEWARE! Not all iMacs allow target display modes, such as these years/models: xxxx, xxxx, xxxx. These models years, however, can set this function up with a simple thunderbolt cable/adapter. Here's how to do it."
    By introducing this concept up front (opposed to burying this huge detail 1:30 in), it's far more clear.

      Thanks for the comment, MBP's don't support Target Display Mode. For something like this I recommend you check out Luna Display lunadisplay.com?aff=8 Its a dongle that allows cross platforming like this.

    Can you extend out to multiple Macs? Example my host Mac is a M1 Mac mini, I would plug in 1 Luna usb-c adapter into the Mac mini, and connect to a 2011 iMac via thunderbolt 3 to a thunderbolt 2 cable. I believe this setup is fully functional, correct? ...now if I want to add a second 2011 iMac to the setup would I need another Luna USB-c adapter piece?

    • @JaimeJMarrero

      Thanks for the view and comment. M1s will only connect with Luna. Are you attempting to connect 3 diff Macs?

    • @yochanman
      @yochanman 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Jaime Marrero I’d be trying to connect two 2011 iMac’s to the M1 Mac mini. Would I need two Luna hardwares for this setup? Or would both iMac’s be able to connect to just one of the Luna’s.

    • @JaimeJMarrero
      @JaimeJMarrero  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I see, Yea-I've never connected 3 Macs into 1, and I don't have the means to test that, but keep me posted if it does work or you find something else. But, my hunch is that it won't work.
