    For one hilariously stupid year, my elementary school awarded only two grades:

    Several of you have already spotted the multiple problems.

    • @toyalovemail

      So there’s no difference between under grade expectations and over grade expectations? What even are the expectations anyway? State standards?

    • @Vgamer311
      @Vgamer311 4 ปีที่แล้ว +85

      My best guess here is that it’s just a stupid way of saying pass/fail, perhaps with the misguided expectation that the school “expects” its students to pass. Even if that is the case, it’s an incredibly stupid implementation.

    • @dchawk81

    • @heysaucemikehere1804
      @heysaucemikehere1804 4 ปีที่แล้ว +32

      Vgamer311 Another issue is that if the teacher has lower expectations, and the student gets high marks, that would be “other than expected’, and you’d assume “other than expected” means they got low scores. So the children who actually excelled wouldn’t pass. I hope I explained that well, I didn’t know how to word it properly. All around it’s a horribly bad system.

    • @Vgamer311
      @Vgamer311 4 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      Heysauce Mikehere like I said, I’d assume that the intended understanding would be that the school “expects” its students to do well. Of course, the lack of clarity itself is a pretty big problem, but I don’t foresee a student failing because they did too well. It’s just a stupid rewording of a pass/fail system.

    This was actually exactly what I thought, that F was just for "Failure," and was considered separate. Another reason why E might have been dropped is that on that alternate grading scale you mentioned where "U" is Unsatisfactory, they often use "E" for Excellent and it's actually a good grade, like I remember in Elementary School. So in situations where the two grading scales are compared, it avoids any overlap.

      We don’t have multiple choice exams like other countries have. Only a small portion of our exams will be multiple choice and the majority will be short answer or essay/report depending on the subject type.
      Math/science subjects may have negative weighting as well- so if you get the answer wrong rather than missing out on gaining a mark, you are deducted a mark instead.

If the school was handing out candies to those with A-C grades and not to those with D and F it was in an effort to reward those who did well, insuring they’d continue to do so and it was also used as incentive for those with Ds and Fs to try harder. I’m sure the students they went to school with did much better academically than the ones you went to school with because they implemented a reward system early on. Yes but the standards for "above average" also rise.
      If in 2020 the standards for above average were that you knew about 70% of what a qualified scientist knows who has been working in the industry for 10 years, you'd be considered above average, when we compare you to the most intelligent group of people within that field.
      If by 2050 everyone knows 70% of what a qualified scientist knows having worked in the industry for 10 years, then not only will said scientist be far smarter than he a scientist in 2020 then the knowledge would also expand making people have to do even more than they do now.
      In laments terms think of a bowl of water. As we discover more things the bowl of water has more water added to it, therefore there are more things students have to learn, those who excel even with this new knowledge, and subsequently more work for them to do they're still above average.
      If i go back in time to 1980, i would be considered "above average", if i go forward in time to 2050, i would be considered "bellow average". Simply because we are getthing smarter as time goes on.
      So nya! mathematics kinda of falls apart when time comes into play.

    In Poland usually it's something like this:
    0 - 29% = 1 (of course fail)
    30 - 49% = 2
    50 - 74% = 3
    75 - 89 % = 4
    90 - 100% = 5
    On bigger tests you can score a 6 if (depending on a teacher):
    - scored 100% or a bit less (maybe half a point, 1 point)
    - got a 5 and correctly solved additional, harder task
    Also teacher can a bit bend these percentages, so on example you can score a 4, if you got 70%. Speaking of border percentages, teachers can also add - or + near the grade, usually it's 5%.

      @Rajesh Thomas Well the current danish grading scale have 2 failing grades, and the old one (which was replaced by the current one in 2007, so not THAT old) had 3 failing grades, so yeah ;)
      The advantages of multiple failing grades are to know how far off you are to even be considered good enough in the subject. If you only get the first grading a scale, a little increase in effort and you should be fine, where getting the 2nd one you can probably still pull it home, but will require some good extra effort. 3rd grade off well if you are this far down, there is a good chance you probably need to take the entire subject over from the start and put a lot more effort into it right from the start then (Should be noted also that both danish grading scales uses numbers rather than letters as grades)

We didn't "fail" a particular subject, but on the last report card of the year there was a section that started "grade recommended in September" (or something like that) that indicated if you passed the year or not. We also had learning skills that where graded on E (Excellent) G (Good) S (Satisfactory) or N (needs improvement). When I started High School our grades where all shown as a percentage, with a fail anything below a 50%.

    • @erictaylor5462
      @erictaylor5462 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @Mario Salinas Rules for retesting vary from place to place and for given context.
      The A-D system is a scale, with the lowest grade being a "D" (Usually around 60% but not always) Anything lower than that, you are *OFF THE SCALE*
      Also, I once took a test so difficult the average was only 5% correct answers. I believe in the history of the test no one had ever scored higher than 35% correct.
      Very often, grades are based on the performance of the class. So if the average score on the test was 90%, then 90% would be a "C" grade.
      It's called "grading on the bell"

    • @THall-vi8cp
      @THall-vi8cp 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Eric Taylor
      That's interesting. When I was in college, we had a knuckleheaded professor who took the highest score and set that as the 100% mark. So if the highest student got, say, 87% that became the A and he adjusted everything up to it. For example, if another student got 63, he would then take 63 ÷ 87 to get 72% and give the student a C instead of a D.
      The school had a policy of "below a C is a failing grade, and if you get a C or better, you can't retake the class" (and add to it, auditing courses wasn't allowed). A lot of students who should have failed were passed, and a few who wanted to retake the course were shoved along to the next one.

    • @DAK4Blizzard
      @DAK4Blizzard 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Except mathematically you aren't technically off the scale. Say you get a C and 3 Fs. That's a 0.5 GPA. Obviously that sucks, but let's analyze what that is. A D = 1.0. A D- is a 0.7. Many places don't use a D- grade, but effectively it's 0.7 given a B- is 2.7 and C- is 1.7. So what's the 0.5? Or any GPA between 0.0 and 0.5? That's where the invisible E grade exists, because there's no F+ grade.
      Possible solution: make the scale out of 5.0, align letter grades to 4.5, 3.5, 2.5, 1.5, and 0.5, with the last representing an E. Students who get As could be given a 5.0 instead of 4.5 as a slight boost as well.
      An E would likely be a failing grade across the board, but it would at least distinguish students who are failing near a 60% versus failing closer to 0%, and motivate some who are in the 40s or 50s percentages. A true F would be a score below 50% (assuming no grading curve).

    because then.. "E" would really take away the concept of using the saying, "A IS for Effort!" 😂👌🏼💯

    3:55 sounds like my HS physics teacher. You were lucky to get 20% on his tests. And he would curve the class grades to reflect that.

      My HS school adopted a grading scale meant to stamp out curving. My math teacher laughed at it, burned it, and continued making hard tests that would make a college student weep. Anything above a 40% was an A.
      On the other hand, when I went to college I got nothing but As in math because they were so easy compared to my HS teacher (who was also a college professor).

      My HS Math teacher graded on a curve but it was never used because I always got a 💯. It sucked because I had to do the next days homework along with that night’s homework to help teach it to the class.

      @@fearless4him595 I had a similar situation in Biology. The teacher graded on the curve, but either I or one other guy would always get 100, ruining the curve for everyone else. She finally gave up and started setting the curve on the next one behind us, so he and I would both regularly get over 100 on tests.

      William Reeves Lol, would people always look at you two when that happened and no curve? After grading papers my teacher would always say “Alright, I’m done grading the papers. Guess who got a 100 again?” I hated that. At least I wasn’t bullied for it or something lol, made people want to be my partner even if they were useless.

    I have one thing to say, here in Quebec, Canada, in my primary we had the A to E because, like the F, in French, Échec mean failure (and so, start with an E) then we switch to /100 grade for everything after some reform in our education system

    I just had % when I went to school...seems to make so much more sense...

      Letter grades are a representation of a range of percentages; they're effectively the summation of each range. It's actually a more concise, yet less precise, way of conveying the same information.

    • @dahulius
      @dahulius 4 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Less precise seems less good to me, and it's not that much more concise...it only takes a glance to understand a % after all.
      Not like it's a big deal or anything though, all good :)

      In Italy we have numbers representing %
      E.g. 8 means you got between 7.75% and 8.25%, and it's considered a quite good grade

    • @nadeen6968
      @nadeen6968 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Trash while it is more precise, it's still the same problem - it doesn't differentiate between those who barely made b+ and those who are nearly a-... and not all schools have them anyway

    A Levels in the Uk Are A-E (all varying degrees of pass, with an A* for exceptional performance) and U for ungraded (a fail). Our old GCSE system ran from A*-G and included all letters between. A*-C were regarded as ‘proper passes’, but D-G were all different levels of soft pass. U again was ungraded.
