    Identification
    The trunk is rough and black- brown, vertically segmented and peeling in old trees. The tree has a dark under canopy. Leaves are glossy and shiny above, turn from bright green to dark green with maturity, yellowish when drying, 9-22 cm long and 5-7 cm broad, alternately arranged on short branchlets, oblong to lanceolate in shape, with a tapered base and rounded apex and a prominent midrib. Male inflorescences form globose buds which are about 2 cm at maturity. Male flowers are nearly 1-1.5 cm long with many filaments at the centre. Female inflorescences have 1-5 flowers, each about 2 cm long, white in colour, and attract bees. The fruit is globose and soft coated, up to 6 cm in diameter, turns orange when ripe. The top is often depressed, and the base has a persistent, woody calyx.
