Renge is the perfect balance of pure, innocent naïveté sometimes, but at others, TOO perceptive and clever for her own good… like ALL kids her age are.
Being able to do mental math that quickly is pretty impressive. I'd love for them to pick this series up and place it like 5 or so years in the future. She probably grows up to be a very gifted and quirky person.

I always thought the implication was that Renge WAS doing multiplication, and that it was Konomi explaining to her the addition method that helped her understand it. To a kid "9x9" might feel like this difficult and arcane problem, but when she understands that 9x9 is just representing nine added together nine times, it suddenly makes perfect sense. Of course, we know from various points in the series that Renge is just wicked smart overall, but still!
