Really appreciate these kinds of videos that pull from your years of experience to recommend annuals, perennials, shrubs, trees that perform year after year.
I find these list of plants so useful. They have introduced me to varieties that I tend to overlook. I have the Chitalpa. Mine are small, but I expect big things from them. It's tough to decide sometimes what to plant as I find I want "All the plants!" Not sure what the drink you have there is (iced coffee?) Sure looks yummy!
In Disney's California Adventure, there is an area near the river rapids (Redwood Creek Challange trail) that is planted thickly with oakleaf hydrangas. They were HUGH this year. Absolutely stunning. Disney paired them with redbud trees.
This year my calycanthus (I have a variety called Hartlage wine) bloomed nonstop from April until July. What a performer. I've also seen a couple of very old sweetshrubs in Turin city centre, which is not only one of the most polluted cities in Italy but in all of Europe, hadn't seen a drop of water in ages, let alone fertilizer, planted basically in full concrete, surrounded by all kind of vehicles: it was in full bloom.
I absolutely LOVE my Sugar Shack. Such glossy leaves. They always look fresh and new and establish themselves so quickly. I planted one last year and loved it so much that now I have three!
Can you do a “in memory of” video of the plants/trees you’ve lost and what you learned from that experience or if you decided to use/not use again and why? Also, I’d be interested in your opinion (maybe even a video) on planting more plants/shrubs/trees that are native to attract native pollinators. Is planting native something you’ve considered doing or if you aren’t interested in the subject.
This is so informative Laura! Thank You for sharing. I love you including the zones, and being so open about all their performances, and the clips showing us the actual plants. Love your white top too!! Stay cool there!
Oh Laura.. the Oakleaf > White > Hydrangeas @6:00 > Are Lovely! 🤍🤍 The leaves add a unique different shape (and color) to the landscape. > Hydrangeas are rock stars of the shrub world, and White hydrangeas have a little extra... Elegance. > Their dainty white petals add a soothing .... peacefulness / tranquility / serenity to the garden.
Laura you just convinced me that I need more shrubs...now I just have to convince my husband...lol , was thinking that it would be nice if you maybe had some "Garden Answer'" COFFEE MUGS to add to merch? anyone else think its a good idea ? Thank you for all you do.🌳
Yay for plant lists! Oakleaf hydrangeas are super underrated. I've watched videos dedicated to hydrangeas that don't even mention oakleaf. They are awesome.
I love Oak Leaf Hydrangas and so do the deer that passes through our yard. They very hardy though and withstand the nibbling. Just don't get as many flowers. The foliage with its oakleaf shape is outstanding. Zone 6b.
Totally redid the two beds in my front yard, and while looking for a low growing evergreen, I found a juniper called Nana. Very similar to the one you planted but not as high, the color and texture is very pretty surrounded by perennials. Since we're on the subject of unusual shrubs I found an elderberry called Dark Tower that grows tall while staying narrow-3 to 4 feet wide. Planted 3 to form a small hedge and 1 to fill a gap in a mixed shrub hedge and they are really taking off. Leaves start out bright green and gradually darken, nice contrast with the usual greens and goes well with ninebarks. I'm in Minnesota zones 4b to 5.
I found Garden Answer with a top 10 perennial review. That was 3 years ago, and obviously, I’m hooked on gardening and GA now. These are so useful. Thanks, Laura!
Am I the only one who needs to know what you are drinking Laura?? Haha. Love all the plants too, some great information, but that drink looks absolutely delicious.
Hi Laura. I grew the Mr. Mustard false spiraea in my zone 6a Northside of Chicago neighborhood and if you clip off the spent blooms, Mr. Mustard will rebloom all Summer.
Another one for glossy leaves WITH later blooms is Clethra. Another beautiful creeper is some of the lower Arctostaphylos (not talking kinikkinik) but cultivars like Chieftain or Panchito. Evergreen broadleaf woodys with beautiful spring flowers.
The chitalpa breaking dormancy late sounds right. Our catalpa trees were so late to leaf out that they looked dead for so long. Worth it for those blooms, though!
i always enjoy these videos where you show us things we don't know about. I've learned SO MUCH in the 4 years I've been following you, learned about SO MANY PLANTS in that time, but there is always more to learn.....thank you, Laura!
I just planted the Button Bush This Spring Never drooped in our heat We have Wet Clay and the leaves have a little red in them. I am very pleased with it.
Hi Laura and Aaron. Love your great info on a variety of plants, especially shrubs. Your own experience is very helpful. I have a scree bed full sun low water, but i love shrubs. Good knowledge. Appreciate you and the entire family. Wish i lived closer so i 😊 could see mom and dads wonderful store.
I love all these you have mentioned and adds possibilities for my west Texas (Midland) landscape. I also have a Catalpa tree and the flowers that come out are beautiful. It loves water and leaves are huge. Thank you for all your inspiration.
Laura, I think you would love a variety of oakleaf hydrangea called little honey! It has bright yellow leaves with the same flowers and same growth habit. I'm a zone 6 and have had mine several years now. I bought mine online and have never regretted it. Hope you can find it!
Ive just added a half dozen shrubs to my wish list, and i already have the other four! I also really love my oakleaf hydrangeas, that deep reddish purple fall color on the leaves is spectacular. And just cutting one bloom with some leaves is so dramatic and fantastic in a vase, add excellent cut flower to their attributes.
I've got a Cotoneaster Cornubia grown as a 20 foot tree here in UK. Great to have an evergreen but with the form of a deciduous tree, a great alternative to conifers for winter structure.
I have three spirea and at least in the quart can, a little slow to establish, but my word. The one I planted at the end of 22 is STUNNING. I have been eying the ceske gold for a couple of years now. I love the chartreuse in my mixed borders.
Hi Laura, I really enjoyed this video! Yesterday, we planted two Shake Shack Button Bushes. I hadn't heard of them and thought they looked quite distinct in the garden centre. My must have shrubs are spireas, goldenrods, quick fire hydrangeas (I prefer the flatter flower), and smoke bushes. We just planted a tiger eye sumac in an area where there is lots of room to grow, knowing we will have to stay on top of the suckering. That you took yours out is causing me pause...
I’m in hot Texas and rarely see hydrangeas here but my Ruby Slippers Oakleaf is a winner. It’s in more sun than recommended and still looks amazing. Love it 🥰
I’ve always wanted an oak leaf hydrangea or two. The garden centers where I live (Located my Island, NY) don’t carry them. I guess I can try online ordering again but haven’t had much luck in the past. I’m going to check out our garden centers for the other shrubs you’ve shown us. Thanks so much.
I agree Oakleaf hydrangeas are so beautiful. I planted three in my backyard not knowing how beautiful they are and just bought two more to put in my front yard. They are so awesome. I love the way they look in fall too!
I love this video. I am working on planning a children's garden. So I am looking for bushes that will be great for hide and seek. Plants that are fun colors, textures and smells. So excited!
Laura & Aaron thank you for the July garden tour. I really appreciate your hard work out in the heat to show the progress of the plants. Your property looks so lush compared to last years early August tour. The dead spot in the cut flour garden was there (dead dry spot) last year only a lot smaller.
Such a good list! I totally binged these types of list videos from you when I first started planning our gardens. Now I've added a few more to my ever growing "must haves"!
I would love if you could do a video on your favorite plants that withstand extreme wind! We live in the dry windy plains zone 5b, plants have so much trouble thriving here. Thanks! Love your videos!
Just wanted to add my enthusiasm for the Cesky Gold dwarf Birch! I’m in zone 6b southern Ontario. Discovered them here on Laura’s channel years ago and planted one on either side, in front of, a deep burgundy Japanese Maple along with a ton of different colour Heuchera among other colourful foliage shrubs and perennials. The colour vibrancy and contrast of Cesky Gold alongside the deep purple heuchera and burgundy Japanese Maple - its stunning. They did take a good 3 years to really establish and fill out but that’s not unexpected. I have them in a dry full sun spot and I’m terrible at watering and they’re still doing well. If you like that gold or chartreuse foliage, I’d also recommend Drops of Jupiter Oregano - which I also heard about here. Not a shrub but man, you’d think they were b/c they get big FAST if they like their location (again full sun with little supplemental watering is working well for me). They really stand out, fill up a bigger space than I anticipated and the bees Love them.
Great video today lots of great advice on these beautiful shrubs. I love the. Second one can't remember the name really beautiful blooms l loved it after you planted it in your beautiful garden. It as lovely red blooms. I will try and get one for my garden.. the drink looks tasty what you are having.
Thank you for talking about Spirea's !!!! They are my favorite !!! So much bang for your buck ...many changing colors and very easy to trim ... Love your channel .... we had a family owned Floral shop and Garden Store in Minnesota ... you remind me of myself ...
I need the recipe for that drink! Thanks for the shrub info, Laura! I just moved into an apartment so I'm going to be putting a Japanese maple in a large pot on my patio. 🍁
Good Morning ☀️!! I'm in zone 6b and planted a spirea a few years ago. Now I have suckeres all over the place. They are beautiful but I didn't realize they spread in my area. I'm gonna dig them out and put them in large pots. Im learning so much from your posts. 😊
I bought an oakleavf hydrangea and tiok it into work because it was bent over and looked dead. Got it half off by the way. My office make laughed. I out it in our sink and let it sitball day in water. Took it home and now 3 years later it is taller than I am and just gorgeous. So happy I bought a "dead" plant.
I have 2 suggestions for you - azaleas and camellias. I can’t believe you don’t have them already, they are so great. They have the most vibrant colours and bring colour to the garden when everything else has decided it’s too cold. If you can grow hydrangeas and roses (love and have these too) then your soil can grow azaleas and camellias.
I was so excited to see you included cotoneaster on your list!! I just planted one in our garden this spring and I absolutely love it!!! It is covered in red berries and I love the tiny leaves!!! It has already put on a lot of new growth and is spilling over the rocks I placed around it!!! I will definitely be finding more places to plant this beautiful little shrub!! A lot of excellent information in this video!! I will be watching it again with my notebook handy!!! Thank you!!!
My neighbor growing up had a huge hedge of oak leaf hydrangea on the side of his driveway and we have a huge hedge in our neighborhood park. In the south they do well in shady areas and they spread pretty nicely

Did you prepare some notes before this wonderful, very thorough presentation, or were you just sharing all these details off the top of your head? ❤ Your knowledge is truly fascinating, and I appreciate you for sharing it with us, thank you for the shrub recommendations, can't wait to add some into my own garden. 😊
Feel free to do more videos like this during this horrendous heat wave right now.
Really appreciate these kinds of videos that pull from your years of experience to recommend annuals, perennials, shrubs, trees that perform year after year.
Good morning all plant people! 😃🌳🌺🌳💛
Good morning 🌼💚
Good Morning to you also!!!
Good morning to you!
Morning ☀️☕️
@@LorettaT-123 good afternoon a few days late. 🌼
Love this kind of video. You are great at describing and the video clips of your own experience are fantastic! Thanks!
Perfect timing for this video since lots of garden centers are having sales on their shrubs! Lots of inspiration.
One day I dream of owning my own little house with a garden and fill it up with all the wonderful plants. Thank you for inspiring us!
Me too!
What a lovely life goal. I hope your dream comes true soon!
Beautiful cinematography. It was informative and equally aesthetically pleasing. Always inspired by your craft and creativity. 🌻💛
Thank you for this video. Extremely helpful! I am adding more beds this fall and I am adding several to my plan
Hi~ Ditto! 🙋
Same 😂

Ha! I’m gonna spend the day with “Sugar Shack” running through my head! Thanks for the video and reminding me of my sisters in the 1960’s!❤❤❤
I absolutely LOVE my Sugar Shack. Such glossy leaves. They always look fresh and new and establish themselves so quickly. I planted one last year and loved it so much that now I have three!

Great video Laura, thanks!
Have a blessed day everyone 🙏🏻💕
It was a fun surprise to see Jenny’s cameo in the dwarf birch portion ❤
Love watching Jenny too! She’s NC, and I’m in SC zone 8 ish
Laura you just convinced me that I need more shrubs...now I just have to convince my husband...lol , was thinking that it would be nice if you maybe had some "Garden Answer'" COFFEE MUGS to add to merch? anyone else think its a good idea ? Thank you for all you do.🌳
She does, I have 6 cups. They are beautiful.
Or garden answer glass jars 😅
Thanks Lora! Love these videos where we learn more about the plants we don't always see. 😊 I've learned so much from you and Aaron!
Thank you for sharing that the juniper is native! I love learning about what is native to different areas 🥰🙏🏼🩵
Thank you for mentioning your in the high desert
In Iowa, the Catalpa tree is known for not leafing out until the last frost. We use them to tell when it is safe to plant.
Very helpful video. These are really beautiful shrubs in your landscape. Hope they continue to thrive. Have a blessed day everyone.
Thank you, you too!
That Juniper plant is gorgeous, thx for all your descriptions of shrubs.😊
Good morning all have a safe and blessed day ❤️
Good morning, thank you! You have a blessed day too 🙏🏻

Whenever I see a Buttonbush flower it makes me think of Horton Hears a Hoo.😅
Got the Desert Orchid Chitalpa. Can't wait for spring to smell the flowers!!
Am I the only one who needs to know what you are drinking Laura?? Haha. Love all the plants too, some great information, but that drink looks absolutely delicious.
I thought the same thing lol!
I’m so glad you asked. I was thinking the same thing.
I was thinking the same thing as well
Is it that mushroom drink?
I bet it’s iced coffee!
I need to know as well.
Just planted a El Niño Chitalpa two wks ago thanks to Laura
Hi Laura. I grew the Mr. Mustard false spiraea in my zone 6a Northside of Chicago neighborhood and if you clip off the spent blooms, Mr. Mustard will rebloom all Summer.
I should go out and count how many plants I have in my garden because of you introducing them to me or telling me more about them…..👍👍👍. Thank you
Another one for glossy leaves WITH later blooms is Clethra. Another beautiful creeper is some of the lower Arctostaphylos (not talking kinikkinik) but cultivars like Chieftain or Panchito. Evergreen broadleaf woodys with beautiful spring flowers.
As you talked, I found myself dreaming of adding more shrubs.... and then I realized -- I can't keep what I already have weeded!
Hi Guys~ Thanks, Laura... GREAT video & SOOOO helpful! Truly appreciated the zone 9 plants in it.
Have a beautiful day everyone!🙋
Everyday I look forward to seeing what you have for us. Today's vidio makes me want to move so I could accommodate these beautiful plants.
The deer LOVE the Oakland hydrangea too! They eat it to the ground. Even come on to the patio to eat it out of a pot.
The chitalpa breaking dormancy late sounds right. Our catalpa trees were so late to leaf out that they looked dead for so long. Worth it for those blooms, though!

The previous owner of our home planted an oak leaf hydrangea. It glows amazingly throughout the hottest time in summer. Looove.
Laura, I look forward to your creating a prairie garden Piet Oudolf style. It's color blocks but controlled wild.
I agree Oakleaf hydrangeas are so beautiful. I planted three in my backyard not knowing how beautiful they are and just bought two more to put in my front yard. They are so awesome. I love the way they look in fall too!

In Houston my Sugar Shack is 10 ft tall! We have it limbed up. Beautiful tree and cute flowers!
Love these kind videos and cooking ones. also! Bring the kids along, they are adorable!
This is a save video for sure. ❤
Thank you! So nice to put the names on the screen so I could take a screenshot of the ones I want to add !
Laura, thank you for all the great information about these shrubs. I would love to get a few of these. Maybe in the future
❤

Thank you for talking about Spirea's !!!! They are my favorite !!! So much bang for your buck ...many changing colors and very easy to trim ... Love your channel .... we had a family owned Floral shop and Garden Store in Minnesota ... you remind me of myself ...
Thanks for sharing these amazing shrubs! 🌿
I have a Oakleaf Hydrangea also. Not the type you have. I'm in total awe of it. It's absolutely gorgeous.
I have several of these shrubs and love them. El Niño® Desert Orchid Chitalpa is one I need to have. Great video.
I need the recipe for that drink! Thanks for the shrub info, Laura! I just moved into an apartment so I'm going to be putting a Japanese maple in a large pot on my patio. 🍁
Need to watch this again and write down the names! Thank you, this is exactly something I have been needing.
Oooooh my word!!! that a large ice coffee. it was funny watching it go down !!! 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Good Morning ☀️!! I'm in zone 6b and planted a spirea a few years ago. Now I have suckeres all over the place. They are beautiful but I didn't realize they spread in my area. I'm gonna dig them out and put them in large pots. Im learning so much from your posts. 😊
Planted the sugar shack button bush after you did the video on it (a few years back) LOVE IT! Attracts sooo many butterflies ❤❤
Loved color of Montana Moss juniper!
My neighbor growing up had a huge hedge of oak leaf hydrangea on the side of his driveway and we have a huge hedge in our neighborhood park. In the south they do well in shady areas and they spread pretty nicely
I am in a zone 8, would it need full shade?
She got me again. Just ordered 4 of them lol 😂
Hi Laura! I purchased an Aphrodite Sweetshrub on your recommendation earlier this spring and so far it is doing very well! No flowering thus far, but not a problem! I'm eagerly awaiting next spring!!
I just found a Pinky Promise coralberry, another shrub I know you’ve mentioned previously for winter interest. It wasn’t on my “want” list but it was on clearance… hard to turn those good clearance deals down!
Thanks for including a Juniper in your list. A list of evergreen shrubs for winter interest would be a cool video, too. Just a thought...💚
Thanks so much … I really appreciate the videos where we get a list , chat about facts and experience review. Great spend of my time! Thank you again🪴
Mercy! An excellent day to stay inside! 80% humidity here today 😅.
I always appreciate your “favorites” videos. I’ve learned so much about so many plants. Thank you!
I would really like one of your video montages of all the beautiful fall foliage plants in your garden. Ty
Can you also list your favorite evergreen shrubs? It’s good to have winter interest so the areas are not bare in the winter.
I love my Oakleaf Hydrangeas. I have 5 of the Munchkin planted in my gardens and they are so cute.
Love these types of videos so I can expand my knowledge and options for what to plant in my garden!
Such a great selection of shrubs! I'm absolutely bringing in more shrubs and fewer perennials.. much less work for my 68 year old body!! (and your iced coffee looked so refreshing!! lol)
